SOE: Twitter Abusers Can Be Banned from Games

Well, if it means they ban people that look like this, I'm all for it.

And how does this explain Horrigan / BuzzCutPsycho being allowed to stay around so long in PS2? They didn't even need Twitter to ban him, just look at what he did in game.

It SOUNDS like they intend to ban players that harass other players, but it would entirely depend on how it plays out.

I'm hoping this is just for people that completely fly off the rail with their online verbal abuse of others. You know, the kids that end up killing themselves because 1,000,000 people are laughing and mocking them thanks to a single harasser. Kids arent mentally equipped to deal with the social injustices capable of being inflicted on them today with our current technology. 20 years ago someone found out you had a funny birthmark maybe 15 kids gave you shit for it. Now the entire world is capable of descending upon you in mere minutes.

Lulz that is why I keep ever account for anything separate and never link them to anything.

I also find it funny people are bashing furry dudes and crossdressers on everquest next forms calling them sick bastards and they don't seem to care.

Don't think it would even be legal for them to do that.

If someone got banned for posting a negative, but civil, review of a game. Wouldn't that violate free speech, or can ToS & EULAs circumvent/nullify laws and constitutional rights?

Heavy dose of RTFA here. They're doing what all successful online games (WoW, LoL, Dota2) are doing... Banning the 0.5% of users that instigate the majority of malicious behavior. These games are for fun and engaging in their community, not raging at and harassing each other.

Also, show me the part where she says anything about banning players for slighting the game. They're banning players who track down other players on social media to harass them outside the game.

Heresy! How dare you come in here, sir, and try to apply logic to a perfectly good rant thread! :D Your interwebz are revoked for the day...

Oh, and +1 to the "ban those MFers that ruin my game play" (full disclosure: I own no Sony gaming product)

The context of the remark was about banning people who harass or abuse other players. In this case, if they are able to link your SOE account to Twitter remarks that demonstrates that harassment in the game then they will bring the ban-hammer down on that individual. People then naturally invoke 'reductio ad absurdum' and extrapolate and attribute that banning statement concept to ANY 'negative' opinion (free speech) about SOE?!? o_0

SOE is not the government ... the constitution only guarantees that the government cannot restrict free speech ... private industry and individuals can restrict free speech to their hearts content ... there are no constitutional elements at play here ;)

So if say I agree to a ToS and EULA and part of it says that they can modify the agreements in any way, at any time and with your consent or notification. After agreeing to the original and then later modifed without my knowledge, they could add in that I now permit them to add a data miner to my PC and scanning my system for any info they wish and can use it in anyway they want for any reason (i.e. Find credit card info and bank account info and they can now use it at their discretion to buy anything with my money and not get in trouble because I agreed to a ToS & EULA that originally did not have that statement but was later modified and thus me granting them the right to do that without consent or notification)

That is different from the "free speech" situation you originally proposed ... company TOS and EULAs haven't been tested in all circumstances yet ... so far the courts have tended to align with the businesses on these but we haven't had a situation where someone's legal rights had been infringed in any significant way ... most companies can change their TOS or EULA at any time and you can accept the changes or decline (and terminate your services) ... there is no option to generally decline a change and continue operating under the older terms ... this particular case seems to be very narrowly focused on abusive customers (and I doubt they would use it to police reviews or something else ... although I am not a user of any SOE products so I don't have direct experience on what they would or would not be willing to do) ;)

No, it's the power that you give corporations when you click "Agree".

He's replying to the guy above him who commented that "that guy sounds like a dick."

When in fact it's a woman who said this, not a guy.

Jesus Christ you guys are acting like a bunch of 13 year old-menstruating-paranoid-schizophrenics. ALL THEY ARE SAYING IS THAT THEY CAN BAN YOU FOR VERBALLY ABUSING OTHER PLAYERS (CUSTOMERS)!!!

All you "Sony is teh government trying to kill freedom" people need to RTFA. If you walked into any business and started threatening some random customer you would be ejected from said business... SAME THING.
