Worth buying a PS3 for GTA 5?

youd have to be crazy to pay anything over 150$ for a ps3 when you consider its age and the new system coming in two months.


i mean if its not a lot of money to you, i guess who cares. but just cause you have it doesnt mean you should throw it away :)

Pennies. I wanted another PS3 (to keep this time), and a fresh, new one. That was basically my reasoning for it.

But on the whole, I agree with you, unless you're in a particularly good position financially, there's no reason to, unless you either a.) really wanted the game, b.) really wanted a brand new system.
 
I say wait for the PS4 version.. the game will probably be a launch title, and they will launch it for PC around this time frame as well.
 
If you have the funds and want a good time killer I'd say yes.
Search on craigslist for a ps3 that has light usage. You can tell by inspecting it, but sometimes you never know.
Knock on wood everything I've bought off of CL has worked and continues to work.

There is no way in monkey-fuck that GTA V will be a launch title for the PS4, and the PC version won't be seen for at least a year or so (possibly less if we're lucky).

Oh, because there are a bunch of amazing games coming out at launch for the PS4? Watchdogs, Assassin's Creed, Madden... all those are coming out on PS3 also. So what point would he have to wait for a game console to come out that is twice as much, and with virtually no games at launch, at least none so good to justify the purchase of the system itself. Maybe by the time the launch window of the PS4 is closed (March 2014) then it might be worth it to get a PS4. But the PS3 already has a incredible library of AAA games. He would get way way way more for his money to get a PS3 now and wait to get the PS4 until at least March. Better graphics don't make better games.

And to quote Rockstar on GTA 5 not coming to next-gen consoles...

"But no, not in terms of GTA, because we’re always working on the current game. We look at the tech at a more practical level: what will be ready for which game that we’re working on further down the line. We don’t have another GTA in development, we don’t work on three of these games at a time. That would be phenomenally depressing.

You also have to consider that the PS3 and 360 use a completely different architecture than PS4 and Xbox One. So, if anything Rockstar will release GTA V on Pc 1st maybe 6-10 months from now and then on next-gen, if not just work on a entirely new GTA for the next-gen consoles.

My prediction is that GTA5 will be available through the PSN store once they get their Gaikai service up and through Xbox live. Backwards compatibility is not possible with the next-gen console but through a service like Gaikai through PS4, yes.

the technology is 7 years old. the price will likely go down even more AND there will be a million used ones on craigslist for next to nothing.

even if you want a ps3 on top or instead of ps4 its still better to wait until the ps4 is out just to save money

I just bought the 500GB PS3 GTA V Bundle, $270. Seemed like a decent enough deal to me.

If you have Amazon Prime (free for a month) and like gaming you can get the best prices on PS3 games I believe. Then cancel that B.

If you can pay the 50 dollars for PSN+ yearly subscription you can get more. ALL YEAR LONG. +Exclusive discounts of up to 75% on the PlayStation®Store.

PS4 will have what? A couple dozen games for the next 6 months+the 2months wait 8x30=240 days of waiting before anything really NEW comes along, 80-90% of those 2 dozen will be found on the PS3 anyway. I think Knack, Deep Down, Infamous: Second Son, The Order: 1886, Yakuza Ishin, Driveclub will be fun but not worth the day 1 jump for most folks. I still feel like I haven't seen enough of Knack and Deep Down to accurately judge them, they look fun but I 've seen ONLY a couple minutes like most of the new games for the PS4. I'd rather be playing games like GTA5 NOW wouldn't you? The Wii U is a great example of the risk of buying day 1, but that's a bit of apples and oranges here so I digress. There is risk though, PS3 is a guaranteed wise investment if you are a hardcore gamer/daily gamer, you will play that thing if you have it and get your moneys worth.

Both versions are rendered in 1280*720.

One system has a working scaler and one doesn't but not a big deal.

In playing it on my ps3 my son on the 360 it plays and looks the same 99.999% the same.

Both maybe rendered in 720p but the 360 upscales it which makes the textures look like ass. There is a difference to be spotted. This is typical of the 360 which upscales everything while the PS3 runs everything (virtually) at 720p native with no upscaling.

It may not bother you or others as much but it does bother people like me enough to prefer the PS3 version in this case.

First off the PS3 won't be "half" priced in 2 months. Its already been confirmed the PS3 will stay at its price for a very long time to come. So the waiting game is pointless right now. You can buy a used PS3 off Ebay (like me) for around $165 which is almost half the price of a new system.

So right now is not a worse time to buy one unless he wants a next gen system and can not afford both.

Well, I fucked with one of the 360's I had with drive issues and have it working - picked up the game and will put the stupid thing in the console and leave it til done (have to force eject discs - the console is a total piece of shit).

So in the end and what it's worth, thanks for the input. Never thought I'd pay $65 for a game but here I am... (but at the same time other developers that release a ten hour shooter (etc) I don't see as equal to the content this offers)

For those arguing about the strengths of the ps3 and its library...agreed. It is a solid system no doubt with many fun exclusive games. I am a 360 owner but still I can see it has plenty of quality titles.

However, the thread title asks whether one should pick up a ps3 for gta5. I say no way.

Oh, and I am wondering why folks think Rockstar would port the game to next gen consoles. Is there any precedent for that? Other than a PC version in 6-12 months gta5 is highly unlikely to be ported anywhere else. Anyway, let's hope Rockstar does a decent job with the gta5 pc port...their track record on pc sucks.

The big questions here are:

- What does "Overpriced my A, More like cheap af u r" mean.
- I heard no one bought sandy bridge processors when they came out, because they totally weren't affordable and worth the performance to cost ratio.

This thread has gone almost entirely full retard.


I think the big thing to consider is particular situations people are in. I myself, had a PS3 a while ago, but got rid of it due to time constraints. There still exists a serious backlog of games for me to play, and I don't like buying consoles from other people, I prefer new. That and the cost of the new system that I plan on keeping forever now is pennies. Motherfucking pennies.
 
I thought about this same question for the past couple of days. I ended up ordering the PS3 GTA V bundle on Newegg for $270 with no tax and free shipping. Like many here have said, if you havent played PS3's greatest hits its worth it. You can buy those games on Amazon or Ebay for under $20. I got Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, and GT5 for like $30 total!
