Network pics thread

Thanks - that's what I thought it should be, I believe its a DB9 to DB9 null modem cable but I'm getting nothing from the terminal - not even during boot, now I am slightly worried that perhaps the switch is bricked - its Mgmt light is flashing but I'm struggling to tell if its amber (bad) or green (post) but its been doing this for over 30mins pretty much as soon as the power cable is plugged in...... I've ordered a null modem cable from the bay just to be sure. PS: My lookout for a nice IB switch landed at this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360723489110?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 wow what a bargain, but unfortunately the seller told me that there is no Mellanox software / firmware on the device(s) :(

Do you have a way to test the null modem cable? Try upping the speed, it may have been changed manually on the switch. I'm not at all familiar with extreme switches.

FLECOM do you happen to know the console settings for a Summit 400-48T switch (putty serial settings) in order to access the serial port on the front of the switch?

This bothered me for a while. I actually patched together a null modem cable from some old serial connections I had. It was tacky. Picked up a few of these:

then I was able to connect with my normal USB to serial adapter.

I bought one super cheap but can't get access to it over that port to configure it. I'm quite impressed how silent the fans are in comparison to Dell PowerConnects! Thanks :D

it's just a regular console (null modem) cable, normally 9600/8/n/1

the management light should be blinking green when it's operational

someone may have changed the console port settings to a different speed so you may want to just try different things till you find it

Interesting, I've got piles of 4Gb Qlogic FC HBA's, I should check the model numbers, I've only ever used them for FCP traffic with my SANs, be interesting to use them as 4Gb NICs. Any idea if that's supported by the VMware HCL?

Just so I'm not spamming the thread with text and no pictures, do you guys still like ubiquiti AP's?

Are they the standard UAP or the AUP-PRO access points?

I'm still loving them for sure!

Installed a new Drobo 5N for my eye doctor yesterday. It fit PERFECTLY on the shelf I had installed for the network switch and DVR :D

Yes, I know the 2nd drive LED is red, they only ordered (1) hard drive when I specifically told them to get (2).

Well I'm just starting out with networking and am proud of what I have accomplished thus far. Someday I'll be advanced as you all! :)

Welcome, Sandlotje, to Networkers Anonymous. My name is Agrikk and I am a network addict. I have a ridiculous amount of home lab kit hanging off a ridiculously overbuilt home network. Soon you will recognize this in yourself. The first step is admitting that you have a problem and that you are powerless in the face of bandwidth, network pr0n and refurbished "deals" on eBay. :D

Whats that polycom hanging out there doing?

the IP550 handset is jsut my desk line, and there's an IP6000 for conference calls. I'm just using a hosted voip provider right now until I have my colo up, then probably going to play around with shoretel. I do have an asterisk box on my test server, but haven't had much time to get it configured yet.

They are all the long range non-pro version. the non-standard POE is a bit of a pain in the butt, but for being, what are they, 1/3 of the cost? it's fine with me.

I'll have to post up a few more pics, got in around 20 SRX-100H firewalls, and a few EX series switches today.

I administer a large ShoreTel system. LMK if you run across any questions.

That's what we said.
We, as electricians, had to do the network installation, but patching was done by the guys who installed the phone system - and they said something like "Well, it works, so our work here is done!" and left. Un-f$§)%($-believable.

Somewhere i got more photos like that, all from companies we worked for. Best thing was "Yeah, just put the fibre patch panel somewhere in that rack" - into a 42U rack filled with 42U of hardware. When we asked how to do that, they told us to throw out something not really needed...

Is that in a house??

This is in production at my work! It is the worst closet in the building, but there a few that are almost as bad. They were like this when I was hired.

I've been trying to get my boss to approve some ot so I can come in on the weekend at fix that hot mess.

LOL I like how that switch is just sitting there when there's a rack. It appears to be full though.

This is to be redone next month ... since 3 years...

Awesome LOL. Reminds me of a place I used to work, they did not believe in PDUs I guess. They got the electrician to install a huge bank of outlets on the wall behide the servers. They had 10 gauge twist lock cables going to those plugs for each server. Well two per server I guess for redundancy. They built this wood platform so you could still walk over the cables. Wish I had taken a pic of that. Thinking of it now, I don't even know if that was to code. I'm pretty sure a server needs to be on a 20 amp circuit or lower, not 30.

We are doing a major overhaul of our test/training lab next week. i'll ask my boss whether i can show pictures of this.

On the list:
- Reorder racks
- Total redo of the power
- HVAC optimization

New Allied Telesyn 9924-T Layer3+ Switch. Just configuring it to trunk to my house switch over fiber and then it'll go in my (eventual) rack in the garage for my ESXi server that's showing up next week. Eventually want to add a second and maybe third server to cluster them. Going to be trunking 4 ports to the ESXi and tagging the appropriate VLANs over them.

It has dual PSUs but only one is plugged in at the moment. The CLi is very... clunky and shitty, but this switch has a lot of features. It was brand new for $100 shipped on eBay. I'm currently sourcing screws for custom rack ears since it never came with any.

We use these in Centera and Avamar grids. They are quite good but rather noisy and power hungry. Apart from that, a lot of features.

What's your opinion of the Cli? I found the builtin command help useless and hate that it won't auto complete. Had to reference the Cli guide a lot.

Wow some messy racks up there and on the previous page ;) looks like my home lab which I seriously need to tidy up, but its not a production lab (yet).

/usr/home that looks an awesome switch for the dollar, I checked out eBay as I desperately need a layer 3 router / switch and there are none in the UK which is annoying. Is it worth shipping one over?

Guys I tried the suggestions (thanks very much) to get on the console of my 2 x 400-48T NetExtremes but I get nothing, no response no garbage characters when I plug / unplug the console lead - is it safe to say my switches are bricks? I hope not as I really would like to get them fired up.

I'll get a pic so I'm conforming with the thread.

I haven't gotten around to actually using it, just configuring and testing it. I checked yesterday and it pulled 40W just sitting there with nothing plugged in, just turned on, so it's not bad on power usage. The CLi is a pig though. I needed to use the manual for quite a few things since it doesn't auto-complete and the syntax is weird. Once I get used to it ity shouldn't be too bad though. Their documentation is lacking. Then again this is moreso an "ISP Switch" than a consumer one.

Cool - thanks, what do you constitute consumer? home user or business user or both, if your talking home user then yeah I can see that :D

I would really like to hear how you get on with it once you've set it up if you don't mind, that would be awesome as I am in the market for a half decent L3 switch, not essentially Cisco.

Welp. Background check finally went though, all of my ducks are finally in a row, the requisite sacrifices made to the proper pagan gods, and therefore access has been granted to allow me to work with my new infrastructure team.

In celebration of that, here is a screen shot of one of three VMware installations I will be working in:

Good times. I wish I could get all these guys folding for a week. Is it too much to ask? :D

Nothing crazy but I did receive my switch (HP 1810-24G v2) for my home network :

9x1GzDt.jpg

It will be installed in a 25U 2-Post ECO Rack from Kendall Howard. I have already received a Tripp Lite 24-Port Cat5e Patch Panel (N052-024) and a Tripp Lite Power Strip with 6 Rear-Facing Outlets (S-0615-1U). With my Synology 211+ and an old APC SUA1500 this will make a nice home setup.

Update :

I started installing components in the rack (currently under the stairs in the basement, but I'll find a more suitable place). I'll start running cable later this week (hopefully).

I love that switch for my small biz clients. Enough power to do what they need - some simples vlans etc, cheap, silent and reliable.
