Teen Hacker Making $50k A Month Arrested

This was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the article.

I'm more concerned about the police's strategy. Cut power to block to stop deletion of data when anyone worth his salt would have a string of UPS units powering their systems? Meh.

What you overlook is that someone wouldn't likely instantly start deleting everything the moment they lost power, especially if the whole neighborhood lost it would just appear to be a regular power outage, until the police were kicking in his door.

Correct. If he was smart he'd have an EMP device that he could just hit the switch at the last second when needed....and encrypted disks just in case.

If he was really smart he would have been doing everything in the Cloud so that his data is safe from harm!!!!

Plant him in an interrogation room for days with no food or water and sprinkled with the occasional beating until he confesses = game over

Seriously, encryption, UPSes and thermite are only a delay tactic at best (I'd suspect those tactics would be more effective versus local authorities, federal are less likely to give a shit) and more likely to piss the wrong people off.

Yes do this. Then laugh your ass off as they cart away your asshole neighbor Juan who you've been stealing wifi from.

Any real mastermind worth their salt would have plausible deniability encryption on their computers. Go ahead, cut the power, enjoy getting data at boot, lol!

Any real mastermind wouldn't have ANYTHING on their computers period.. it is all done remotely on zombie systems or a VPS somewhere across the world

"The arrest operation shut down the power to the entire neighbourhood to prevent the deletion of sensitive data."

That's a pretty smart tactic to use. I got a good chuckle. Even if the kid had UPC's setup, it is at least worth taking a shot at it on the chance he didn't.

I'm imagining a room full of computer hardware just blinkering off and seeing one kid going into a panic when he quickly realizes he can't delete anything.

He could render the data unreadable faster with a hammer. I guess he assumed it was just a power outage.

storing all the data on a ram drive would have been his best bet lol. didn't demonoid or tpb or something do that with the ip address table?

Torture is a poor way to get useful information. Give me a restraining device, a few razor blades, a drill, and something hot/electrical - I guarantee I can make you admit to anything.

They do this stuff all the time there. I think it's going to pretty much become how 3rd world countries make money. They'll basically get hired out by 1st world businesses and countries to hack on their behalf so the people with actual money don't have to get their hands dirty.
Wait, I thought that was what we paid Israel for?
