Considering getting a Wii U for my kids. What is an ideal second controller that is compatible with the most, if not all, retail games? From what I've been reading, it seems like Nintendo is giving people a fit when it comes to local co-op and multiplayer. I just want to play games with my son. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Wiimotes work just fine with the Wii U. The gamepad acts as a central hub for some games, but other players can use Wiimotes while the first player uses the gamepad.

Pretty much. Most games can use the Wiimote (I recommend the Wiimote Plus), and a number of them are also compatible with the Wii U Pro controller.

I thought Wiimote with motion plus is required for Wii U? Older Nintendo wiimotes and some generics (even new) are not motion plus.

Depends on the game. In Nintendoland, you only really need the Wiimote motion plus model when playing the Legend of Zelda minigame. You can still use the standard one for other minigames.

All the branded Wii U wiimotes are motion plus now, though.

As mentioned before, the best controller to have is a Wii-Mote becuase the "classic" controller isn't supported in all games.

I don't think local co-op/multiplayer is that complicated. One player will almost always use the Wii-U Gamepad, and then additional players use additional controllers. And you can use just about any controller you want from the Wii or Wii-U. The choice is limited to by the developer of the game you're playing, but almost everyone supports a Wii-Mote.

One thing to keep in mind is that co-op and multiplayer is different on the Wii-U. The experience can be drastically different. For example, the player with the game pad can have an entirely different view than the players using the TV to play. It's pretty fun and not uncommon for the person with the gamepad to be walking around the room not even looking at the TV.

So how how are the wii motes for playing games like Rayman Legends and Mario games? Playing with a d-pad work ok?

I've only used the gamepad because of the second screen draw element. I think the Wii remote is used in multiplayer only but don't quote me on that.

It's worth getting a Wii u pro controller and the classic controls are a must if you want to use a controller other than Wii tennis for older Wii games.

I use these

I'd been eying the pro controller. I'll get that one for sure. How is the motion tracking on the wii motes for kart games? Would getting one of those wheels be worthwhile? I have a daughter who I'm sue would love one of those.

It's good those wheels that the Wii motes go in are more for a better feel they are really cheap used.

The pro controller is good. Lasts a long time on a charge, is light and responsive. I don't use the wii remotes for kart games, but for 2D platformers, Wii remotes work just fine.
