This kid was making $50k a month and still lived at home with his parents?

Dubbed "the superhacker", the teenager was making $50,000 (£31,500) a month, working from his bedroom in Buenos Aires, police say. The arrest operation shut down the power to the entire neighbourhood to prevent the deletion of sensitive data.

Stack cheese with no bills, smart kid. Got caught, not so smart though.

Should have had a battery backup...not like he couldn't afford it. Maybe a tazer for a "power surge fried my data" excuse.

What the fuck is a "high capacity computer"?

They do this stuff all the time there. I think it's going to pretty much become how 3rd world countries make money. They'll basically get hired out by 1st world businesses and countries to hack on their behalf so the people with actual money don't have to get their hands dirty.

Dang, and supposing he doesn't end up getting hired somewhere, only looking at 10 years? I mean, that's a good bit of time, but people have definitely got hit with more for less.

That's a pretty smart tactic to use. I got a good chuckle. Even if the kid had UPC's setup, it is at least worth taking a shot at it on the chance he didn't.

I'm imagining a room full of computer hardware just blinkering off and seeing one kid going into a panic when he quickly realizes he can't delete anything.

Or they could have just waited until he left the house.

he should have just done it all in the cloud! /sarcasm

hmm lets say he has around 1 million US in a numberd account some where at 1%(likely more)
over 10 years meh guy is set for life lolz

though i would moved to some where with a nicer prison system once i had every thing rolling just in case
EU has nice club feds

what? he didn't have a thermite data deletion backup system?

This was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the article.

I'm more concerned about the police's strategy. Cut power to block to stop deletion of data when anyone worth his salt would have a string of UPS units powering their systems? Meh.

Any real mastermind worth their salt would have plausible deniability encryption on their computers. Go ahead, cut the power, enjoy getting data at boot, lol!

Suffers from the broken window fallacy, though. It doesn't actually generate anything directly and is in fact detrimental to systems of trust (relative term) that are important for the superstructure of modern capitalism.

yup hidden encrypted drive with a dummy drive sure you could give the a pass word but it would lead to an empty drive lol
good luck finding any thing
and they would never know if you gave them the real key or not

i would be pissed if the cops cut power to my neighborhood to go after some guy

Recruited (or forced into service) for Intelligence Service in no time. Argentina no less, future base of world conquest :p

Pssshh, that's nothing! I hear Jane Lynch's ex-wife :) is asking for double that for spousal support. Money just doesn't go as far these days:(

Computer in the wall that connects with VNC through Bluetooth or something.....

Always, Always, save a thermite for your Computer in case they shut the power off.

What a noob.

if he is so smart I'm sure that he was also a bit paranoid and had a few layers of protection set up. Also, I'm guessing that in his area power may be less reliable, so he likely would have UPS and not have realized police cut his power.

high capacity computer = detachable high capacity storage devices, carry handle for easy transport, tray loading drive with FRICKIN LAZER BEAMS and a overclocking selector switch to go from semi fast home PC to FULL AUTO ASSAULT 1337 h4x MODE!

Bad ass! Can you get it DuraCoated? Maybe in assault comp black?

ram disc and encrypted source = game over

Plant him in an interrogation room for days with no food or water and sprinkled with the occasional beating until he confesses = game over

Seriously, encryption, UPSes and thermite are only a delay tactic at best (I'd suspect those tactics would be more effective versus local authorities, federal are less likely to give a shit) and more likely to piss the wrong people off.

A computer with more than ten sticks of RAM. Because no honest person needs more than that and if you do then you are probably a rapist, a pedophile, a terrorist, or all of them at once.

NOOOOOO STAAAAAHP, WURRR YOU TAKIN' MY 'PUTER?!
