This list of the 12 best mods for PC games is pretty good but I think you guys can come up with a few that should have made the list.

The real joy of playing a game on PC is that, thanks to mods, your entire experience can be improved by the work of dedicated fans. Because some mods are so extensive, transforming almost everything about the source title, we felt it was only fair to list 12 of the best of them here, since they may as well count as their own new games.

Somewhere there's a business shark reading and saying how they could've distributed those as DLCs and made good money.....

....

some people will never get it

This is actually a much better list thatn I'd expect from Kotaku, but no Team Fortress?

No OSP/CPMA/UTComp/HLAG, no Doom 3: Last Man Standing... not a single great mod from the past. Kotaku is such a lame house.

Gary's Mod?

I'm not really into mods, but that's one I've heard many times over in the past. I'd think it should be on that list.

showing my age here, but so it goes - Ultima V: Lazarus remake w/the Dungeon Siege engine

I think they were aiming at a list of mods people would want to check out now and not looking to create a "best of all time" list.

Yea the ones I was thinking should be included were actually included. Better list than expected.

The one Mod I I've spent the most time with. I'm a little shocked to see someone mention it!

That oil rig map.... so fun.

I guess I'd agree since Deus Ex has an SP mod, vs MP Team Fortress. May be hard to find a good server for TF these days. Though I do have to say TF was the best mod of all time. :D

Must have been...otherwise, no reason why Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, Action! Quake 2, and several others shouldn't have been on there.

I'll have to check some out. Particularly the battlestar galactica one because freespace 2 was so awesome. Last of the great space sims. :(

Desert Combat Mod for BF1942, best mod of all time IMHO.

Thank you.

Any list like this that fails to mention the mod that effectively inspired mods to become more than just map packs and basic skins and revitalized the BF community resulting in BF being continued is a fail list. Unfortunately EA managed to fuck up every single BF worse and worse till it became the massive anti mod, anti competitive cluster it is now, but that isn't the fault of DC.

Generations Arena is the all time greatest mod... even if nobody plays it. :D

As much as I hate to include a "pro" anything, there's OSP and CPMA for Q3. Going back further, there's Lithium for Q2...yes, the classic Team Fortress for Quake, and what about the Aliens TC for Doom? There's a lot of great mods that never even got close to this list. But... that's what I expect from Kotaku. I haven't read an article yet from them that I like or agree with.

Probably the biggest explosion of mods came from Quake. Actually, all the Quake's had big mods. Anyone remember Xmen for Quake?

Even though these mods look to be from eh more recent games I can't think about mods without thinking about Chaos for Quake2.

Don't forget Doom. There were dozens of mods for it,everything from Star Wars to the Simpsons.
I'm disappointed they didn't mention any of the numerous mods for Fallout 3 and New Vegas, many of them better than the official DLC's.

How can they not mention Counter strike?

One of the highest rated mods that eventually became a full fledged game on it's own and really brought the modding world into the spot light.

What only CounterStrike?

Team Fortress originated as a mod, but got bought up by Valve.
DOTA was a mod for Warcraft, that got bought up by Valve.
Natural Selection was a mod for Half Life, that got made into it's own game NS2.
Day of Defeat was a Half Life mod, that got bought up by Valve.

The list goes on and on, but my point is that a lot of big popular games were once mods of older games.

Desert Combat
Starwars warlords. How you overlook a single guy recreating every combat ship in the starwars universe to spec and putting it all together into an awesome mod I'll never know.

Yes but the thing is that CS was the biggest in terms of it's sheer popularity.

It's what really put the spotlight on the modding scene with a total conversion mod.

In terms of mods most people recognize it as the biggest/most popular mod of all time.
