So I saw some Hearthstone beta gameplay on twitch and got the itch to try a card game. Looked around and Magic is basically it, so I decided to give it a go.

Day 2 and I'm fucking addicted. Anyone else play? I'm just using the cards you get for free when you buy the account, and the possibilities are endless. Its easy to spend hours thinking up what to do with a deck and then tweak after each match. I played until 8am this morning. I haven't done an all nighter like that in a long time.

Build diversity? Yes. Solid PvP? Hell yes. Brilliant strategic thinking and play? Yes.

I never thought I'd ever be into the card games. I always thought of them as being for the even nerdier, dorky, fat kids. I wish I had discovered it sooner.

The only card game I'm really into is Android: Netrunner, which can be played on OCTGN.

I played the original PC game and the duals expansion (we're talking late 90's here). I loved the adventure game component it had.

Then they made a new game and starting charging the same price for digital expansion packs as real ones. At that point, Magic computer games lost me.

I love playing the card game itself. I built an entire deck around "Supreme Verdict" and "Debt to The Deathless."

I also wish Duels of the Planeswalkers was better, but having set card sets for deckbuilding feels pretty restrictive.

Although it's not a pure TCG, Card Hunter is a mix of D&D, TCG, and turn-based strategy. It's free to play, and releases in....an hour and 50 minutes. Each piece of loot has cards (abilities) associated with it that your characters use.

I've really enjoyed what I played so far. There's a campaign and PvP.

Yes I'm an avid Magic the Gathering Online player. I love it.

I'm actually in the Hearthstone beta, I played ton for about a week but I went back to Magic Online. I play the paper and the online one but I seriously love magic so much more than hearthstone. Hearthstone is OK it has no where near as much Depth and Game modes.

I love that I can go play M14 Draft or M14 Sealed, then play a Pauper Torny. Or whatever there is so many modes the gameplay is complex, the deck building is endless. Of Course Magic Online costs a pretty penny to buy the cards, trade, enter tornies but its so enjoyable.

My name on Magic is Syntaxx , feel free to add me. I haven't touched hearthstone beta in like 3 weeks now. The only enjoyable part of hearthstone beta is playing arena and collecting cards. Arena is the closet thing to draft/sealed. Still not the same though.

I also played duels of the planeswalkers 2014 and beat all the single player stuff.

I'll add you tonight. I could use some help on where to go from here. Do you know of any good beginner guides? I'm doing alright, but I'm still confused on attacking/blocking and what will creature will kill what creature. I keep throwing stuff away because I think I'll block, but it actually dies instead.

I'd love some deck building/theory stuff too if you know anything. I want to use my event tickets to buy a bunch of common/uncommon/rare cards, but I don't know what to get. I'd be happy getting a big pack of multicolor cards as long as I knew that most were decent and usable.

still amazes me that MTG is still going strong today..I started playing it at beta and stopped playing at like 4th edition. I always kind wis h Inever sold off all my cards. I had a nearly a complete set of the dark expansion plus a lot of all the others up to that point. Probably can't even use those old cards in play today.

here are some popular web sites you want to check out:

http://mtgo-stats.com/ ( lists popular decks and prices by Format )

http://mtggoldfish.com/ ( same as above )

www.mtgoacademy.com (great source for learning how to play magic in different formats)

Also good to watch You Tubes to learn more.

it depends on what type of Budget you have. if you want to start off without spending a ton of money, you most likely want to build a Pauper Deck. It is used in Pauper formats competitive decks can be had for like $20. Standard format can get expensive I think the cheapest competitive deck is like $60-70 mono red.

If you just going to play casual then just have fun do as you wish and play casual matches. What I'm stating above is if you want to get good and enter in Tornies online to win booster packs.

Remember you also start with like 15 NEW player tickets roughly you can USE that PLUS 1 Event Ticket TO enter a New Player M14 Draft Booster or Sealed, I've been using all of mine doing that. I finally won my first two tornies.

For me I pretty much at this point only play M14 draft, sealed or Pauper Constructed.

Draft and Sealed is where you get booster packs and you have to make decks on the fly with the cards you get and compete against others as they do the same.

Just have fun take your time, decide what you want to do. It can be overwhelming.

Play a lot, Watch Videos, Read Articles to get better. I'm trying to do the same myself.

If you are COMPLETELY BRAND NEW TO MAGIC then You must WATCH these videos Below they will help greatly:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GadqHggATe8&list=TLi_Bo2RO5PrA

Start there its Part 1 and keep clicking through to part 6 being the last part.

You can most likely use them in Legacy, plus they have the system where you collect full set you could redeem them for Paper set.

MTGO's beta client is so much better now and more stable, It will soon be the Only Client removing the legacy client from play.. they are also working on Introducing Full blown leagues again that will be so sweet.

I'll give it a whirl one of these days. I still know the rules after all these years. I think I started with M:tG when I was in 5th or 6th grade.

cool, add me if you do.

it costs $10 to buy which you get some cards, a bunch of new player tickets some event tickets then you are off to do as you wish.

Cards in this game cost money like in the real world. You buy them from other players or Bots. You use your event tickets to buy them. 1 event ticket is $1, but the BOT will save you credit to buy other cards say if you only buy a card that is 1 cent then u got 99 cents credit on bot. You can also sell or trade your current cards to get new cards. You can also buy your way into drafts or tornies with Event Tickets. I played in high school then i stopped and recently returned to the magic world like a couple months ago and now im getting paper cards again, playing with a friend and we're heading to a pre-release party for Theros expanison comes out next weekend gonna enter in the sealed torny.

I doubt anybody does, but if anyone lives in palm beach fl area, always looking for more people to play with in person. Draft parties n what not.

This game is stupid addicting. Biggest problem I'm having is not enough time lol

I want to do a Pauper deck at first and then go from there I think. I don't mind dropping some cash. I've got $15 invested and I'm getting more than I would from most games. I've got $45 to go before even reaching full retail.

I could never get into the virtual MTG, I much prefer playing it with real cards and real people, including seal booster and seal deck drafts since you kept the cards and usually had side bets going on as well with players. I like the feel of cards in my hand and the smell of opening a new pack when i played. Also forgot to mention I prefer the older art then the new artwork...

Will do. Such a well designed game, despite a few over the top cards being introduced here and there.

Yeah pauper is fun, i only have 1 pauper deck right now. I think it ran me like $45.

Also you can Play Booster Draft or Sealed in Magic Online and you can keep the cards of course its digital but still. I like playing both ways But i prob do prefer paper but its hard to find people to play with and go out when your married to shops to play all the time.

I play FNM at stores (Card Kingdom mostly).

I found online play to be too slow. People always take forever to do shit. Some people take a while in real life but you can hassle them to hurry the fuck up.

I build complete dick decks typically GUW fog control decks. Almost won a PTQ last year with a fog deck.

If you play online I'd recommend playing Modern as you have to buy less cards and have more builds open to you. Standard is quite expensive to play.

Currently I'm messing around with this \/ I just love watching people attack with all their might then preventing all damage or redirecting strait into their face.

3 Snapcaster Mage

1 Gideon, Champion of Justice
1 Jace, Memory Adept

3 Azorius Cluestone
1 Dissipate
4 Divine Deflection
1 Entreat the Angels
4 Negate
4 Riot Control
4 Safe Passage
1 Sphinx's Revelation
1 Staff of Nin
4 Supreme Verdict
4 Think Twice

is this deck for modern or standard?

is this deck for modern or standard?

Standard. Its not quite ready I end up milling myself sometimes so I need a reshuffle card in there.

If I were to play Online I'd Play Modern as its slightly cheaper and your cards last longer and you have more variety in terms of builds.

But events like PTQ, FNM, States, ect... are pretty much all Standard so in real life I play standard....Wizards of the coast needs us to keep buying their new cards every few months.

What if you put the M14 Elixir of Immortality in your deck, use it then it puts your graveyard into your library.

I want to do the draft stuff eventually, but its only day three and there is no way I would know what to pick right now.

Drafts are awesome because it amplifies the necessity of Card knowledge and luck drastically. Down side is the cost....and if you get shit luck. Never done a draft online though so I don't know much about that.

MTG is addicting and awesome. In college we had a group of 20ish people that would do tournaments all weekend. While online is cool for its convince playing face to face with friends is where it is at.

Wizards hosted tournaments are pretty awesome too as you get to see some uber nerds who take this shit as serious as life itself rage when you beat them....especially if you fog or mill them to death. I took a dude out of the top 36 at a PTQ with a custom made Trading Post fog deck and he literally almost escalated to violence. His rage was hilarious.

stevedave just reminded me another reason i loved to play counter spell decks back in the day, you deny everything and after a while they look at you as they play something i usually said I will let that one pass, then fireball it next turn just to mess with them ahhh the memories, plus having custom decks for 2v2 or 3v3 chaos matches was just awesome fun im guessing the online game cant do that...

a buddy of mine had a power nine cube that contained some real cards and a lot of proxys. We used to throw down like 10$ each and winner take all draft that. It was so much fun.

So crazy that this thread popped on here.

I just bought my $10 and am looking to get back in this game. I played up until Visions was released (that was like 98).

Modern is NOT less expensive than standard for a new player though. I am waiting until the 27th (standard set cycle) and may jump in.

Really like MTGO as I always have play options at any time of the day. The different formats are cool.

On Day 1 Modern might be the same or slightly more pricey. But if you plan on playing through a few cycles it is cheaper because the cards stay in the set longer and you don't have to buy new cards every set. Once your block goes out in Standard you often of to build an entire new deck. In modern you rarely have to do that.

I think I'm going to continue to experiment, buy some cheap cards, and make my own decks before just copying what works. Hopefully, it'll help give me that fundamental understanding of how cards can interact.

Cards seem to be cheap anyway for most stuff.

I started an account on Card Hunter...seems like a lot of fun! Kind of a mix of a CCG, DnD and those other online card games like Hearthstone.

I bought a fair amount of MtG cards around when the Core 2013 set came out...got some Ravnica cards and a few Dragon's Maze, but I started playing Android: Netrunner and prefer to spend my money there (that is, much less and you always know what you're getting card-wise).

Hook me up with those old cards bro

I made this goofy white/blue control type deck. Running lots of stuff to lock creatures down and cancel spells along with cards to help me draw & recover cancels from graveyard.

It's works insanely well when I start off with a decent draw. I can feel people rage quitting when I just shut down everything and have maybe one creature on the board who I keep picking up to play again and get my cancel out of the graveyard. It gets destroyed by early pressure if I don't get what i need though.

Game is awesome lol

Please tell me you're running Supreme Verdict in your deck. No blue/white deck would be complete without it.

I don't even know what that is. I only have the starter set and the magic 2014 deckbuilder set.

I don't know what cards to buy.
