LG 39 inch TV $314 // TCL 40 inch TV $278

Everyone that visits me is amazed at how well a gigantic, high quality HDTV works in a desktop environment. I've taken so much hate on this forum over the years for running this 52" where others would run a 24-27" (almost identical view distance, and I got it in 2009 for about 1k refurb) but almost every person that has visited me has gone off and bought their own massive HDTV to use for everyday computing.

No, the color accuracy isn't perfect, and it isn't quite as sharp as you'll see with a smaller/higher resolution purpose built "PC monitor"... but for most people that simply doesn't matter... and that fact just drives hardcore screenslaves crazy. :)

Wow, someone seriously woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. No one is saying that it's not a great set for what it's intended for, or that it doesn't work with a PC better than a lot of HDTVs that have been released. You're vehemently defending it to the point where I'm wondering who the biased one really is. I think it's funny that everyone who wasn't as impressed with this set as you are is either deemed foolish or had a bad one. As if no one could have possibly had a better experience with another product for their intended usage, ever.

Again, no one is saying it's not a great product for the money. Many of us have fully acknowledged what this unit does well, so I'm not sure why you're so defensive. Maybe you missed some of the posts; it must be hard to see everything from that high horse you're on. ;)

Cliffs: LN5300 is a great buy and a [H]ot Deal at this price; most people are very happy with it. If your primary concern is as a large PC display, it may even be the best of what's available now. According to some, it will also make your coffee in the morning and you'll find yourself surrounded with gorgeous women at home and jealous geeks at LAN parties. :D

Pretty much this.

Additionally, instead of touting all about how good the set is and tooting your own horn, how about point people in the right direction for properly calibrating their units so they can enjoy the same experience that you do?

There will be others on Hardforum and elsewhere that will buy this unit and use it in much the same way you have. I suppose that if they don't enjoy it or find that it falls short of the hype, that they're tools like the rest of us?

These displays require calibration to accel in this role. You've achieved great results with your units, why not point the rest of us in the right direction so we can do the same? Yes, sometimes that direction may need to be the returns counter, but if you think that some of these problems are calibration issues then perhaps offer up some advice for addressing these rather than just presuming we're niwits for not feeling the same way about it thay you do.

Best buy has the 39 inch for $318 and the 42 inch $417. I picked up the 42 inch because the 39 wasnt in stock.

As was mentioned earlier, the deal for these on Amazon appears to be dead - though according to Bman, Best buy has a reasonable price for these.

Check your local B&M if you're looking to pick one of these up. YMMV.

What state are you in? Amazon started collecting tax in Georgia on the first of the month. Amazon has certainly lost its advantage for me.

all the 39's are ips right?

The 39's are MVA; it is not easy to tell, though, and this MVA is as IPS-like as they could make it. I was an IPS snob forever and it really doesn't matter with this set other than viewing angles and some color shift from the extreme sides.

I think I've asked SixFootDuo to see pictures of his setup in probably 3 or 4 threads on [H] and never received a response. In fact, the reason I first purchased this set a few months ago was because of his recommendations in a thread. After seeing him spewing garbage I think I'll disregard anything he says from now on... pretty childish.

And to clarify to everyone, I wasn't saying that I was going to buy a 27" 1440p screen because the Westy wasn't sharp enough, just that I can't find anything large enough @ 1080p or above to replace it with the quality I've gotten used to over the last 7 years of Westy bliss. I've tried many options (self, forum, and professionally calibrated) and never found such a great "jack of all trades" screen. If my Westinghouse wasn't having horrible bleed issues I wouldn't even be considering replacing it.

As for the value of this set, I have to echo what a few others have said (and my own experience), it's *fantastic* if you don't need it as a dedicated PC monitor.

Fantastic if you don't need it as a PC display? That's the kind of nonsense I'm talking about. Sorry, that just doesn't stand up against what everyone else is saying. In fact, it's so left of center that just about anyone is going to call into question the experience level of the user.

Just biased HDTV haters, nothing more. It bothers them that for $300 something odd dollars we walk away with a 39" LG thin bezel, 20lb LED display that beats just about any other display out when you consider, a - cost - b - display size - c - performance - d - quality. it bothers them because that's just not how you do business. You're supposed to spend $400 and pray to the pixel gods you get a display from Korea that looks ok or whatever other "normal" path there is. You're not supposed to spend $300 on a HDTV and have it perform better, look better, have a larger display, etc. It's like we are cheating or something. And, honestly, that's kinda the point. lol

I had it in the best buy cart and it was 318 and now its 365. UGH

I hear they go on sale at BB and other chain stores for about the same price and then you can pick the version your getting (MVA or IPS since BOTH versions are out there), and return easier if you don't like it. I'll post it again, if you get one with a Y as the letter forth from the end of the code it's IPS, otherwise MVA. BTW some people like the MVA panels better as the IPS seems to have some issues with the edges of the set being darker vs the MVAs. If your going to purchase id seriously suggest reading the linked post on AVS forum for details.

I was going to get the MVA version to test out myself but decided my Westy could hold me over until I recover from the Vegas trip last weekend.

That's a nice deal on the 39".. Hopefully it goes on sale again so I can pick one up.

I would of got the 39inch if I could of got it locally, but it would of been $20 in gas to the closest site and I hate driving so I nabbed the 42 inch. Not a bad price for either set honestly

Still for $387 you can't beat it. I'm watching the movie Parker on blu ray right now the picture on this tv is really good. Can't beat it for the price honestly

I still don't know why you blame Amazon for being bullied by whatever state you live in.

Agreed. Why hate Amazon for not breaking the law? Don't like it? Elect someone else and repeal the tax. Except US democracy is totally broken so you can't. Hah! Gotta love the American Catch 22. :D

Just be thankful you don't live in a state that expects you to record and list every single item you bought online or brought in from out of state every year so they can tax you for the pleasure of using it. No, that isn't a joke.

I got my Vizio 37" LCD 1080P screen back two years ago for $349 (Walmart Black Friday deal). Still use it today as a monitor for my rig.

Looks like Newegg has the 42LN5200 model for 369.99 after you put in this promo code. EMCXLWV222

Anyone know what the difference is between the 42LN5200 & 42LN5300 in terms of the panel itself. I did notice it only has one HDMI port which is pretty lame and no audio out.

Any suggestions for a dedicated PC and Movie monitor?

Seriously:confused:? The very thread you are posting in is the exact answer to your question!

For the record, I have had 2 friends that had the Westy that a few in this thread are raving about, and my Panny is better in every aspect...42",4:4:4, A-IPS, LED backlighting, no ghosting, and better color/black levels..This coming from a set that has been replaced with even better options..The Westy was a great choice back in the day, but like everything, time marches on.

If my Panny were to die tomorrow, I would hop on one of these in a heartbeat, especially considering the insanely low pricing.

So, you've piqued my curiosity. What Panasonic model # are you referring to?

I'm happy with the 42inch I got for $417, it's a really good screen

Can anyone post pictures of your setups? How far away do you guys sit?

There were two identical models, except for the screen size. I am using the slightly less popular (due to the high cost at the time) TC-L42D2..The TC-L37D2 had a HUGE following behind it as one of the most well regarded HDTV turned PC monitor..I also had my set professionally calibrated, since my best friend owns a Home Theater Shop;)..

The only negative thing I can say is that I have seen some *SLIGHT* PWM flicker, but it only seen to occur after I exit out of a movie with a lot of dark scenes...After about 20 minutes, or a power cycle, it is completely gone..I should also note that I have been using this set for 3 years with an insane usage time, and have really only noticed this in the last 2-3 months..I had no idea until I found out LEDs can "flicker" after a Google search..For anyone that has heard me complain about the issues I have with migraines, LED tech was a LIFE SAVER for me..I wasn't able to use a computer for ~18 months until I purchased an LED based LCD due to how sensitive to CCFL "flicker" I am:(..

I sit 3.3ft away from my 52"

Dear God man, are you blind?!? I just measured my setup, and my head is exactly 5.5' from the screen..I used to actually sit another 2' farther away, but didn't like having to boost text size a bit..When I had my 52" Samsung, I would sit 10' away @ 1080P..
