Could you imagine paying this much for a console when the average annual salary is only $10k? Yikes.

The PlayStation 4 is set to cost the equivalent of $1,137 US Dollars on launch day in Argentina. Argentina has been experiencing a massive inflation crisis over the last year, with the government reporting 10% month on month inflation for most of this year. By comparison, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 cost about $600 USD at their launches in the country and the average Argentinian makes $10,000 USD per year according to the government.

Hyperinflation means one of two things: Either the Argentinian government is printing massive amounts of money, or there is a global lack of faith in their currency. Given the Argentinian government's recent activity (the Falklands come to mind first of all, but they've been up to all sorts of other mischief), this comes as no surprise.

Most peoples in Argentina would not be able a PS4 it even if it would sell at $300.
Since the wealthy are very wealthy (and the poor very poor), I guess it then makes sense to ask as much.

Read the comments and you will see the argentine government is manipulating the currency but in reality this article like most poorly written ones is incorrect.

Do we really get to keep calling The Falklands recent activity at this point? That was over 30 years ago :)

those greaseballs shouldn't be playing video games anyway. back to work! those coca leaves aren't going to cut themselves down.

Ok it's been easily 25 years since I took economics class in high school but when a currency goes through inflation yeah it's buying power vs. another currency changes, but doesn't that often coincide with the amount of money people are making? So yeah it's the equivalent of $1100 USD, but if they're making twice as much money at their jobs who cares, or is this a type of inflation where wages are stuck and imported goods are what is being doubled?

This is more of a result of currency manipulation and regulation. Also, importing electronics in South America is a bullshit deal. All of them pay a lot more for hardware than we do.

In mexico its about $650 usd on preorder
The PS4 goes for $570

PS3's were 1100-1400 if i remember correctly around release time there too. No surprise.

No consoles really pick up over there until they're hacked wide open and pirated games can be sold.

Read the quote, the PS3 definitely did NOT cost 600 there upon release. Not even close.

I just hope this kind of inflation never catches up with the US!

There's a few economics who think we've already laid the ground work for hyper-inflation. So I wouldn't hold my breath.

The advantage to inflation? If you can keep getting a decent wage to go along with it, the stuff you mortgaged now will be cheaply paid off since the mortgage doesn't increase.

The downside to inflation, is if you're one of the rare Americans who actually saves money, you very well could be losing value on that money in the same way... it doesn't increase. Especially with bullshit savings account numbers hovering in the 0.1% even safe things like CDs and what not are maybe making 1% (maybe). Bottom line unless you want to put some risk on your money, you're probably going to lose value in it.

Damn, makes me think I should invest my savings into drugs. Inflation goes up, you just charge more for the drugs. Even though it's the SAME DRUGS! :)

U guys seem surprised....all over the world things cost more than in the USA,while getting a shitier sallary also.Gas in my country is 1.8$/L, and all this at a 500$ /month average salary.Ps3 costs 400 and it was 500 at launch.

I used to live in Uruguay, which is just mini-Argentina for the sake of argument. It was pretty crazy how much electronics cost. I went back last year and things are still outrageous. An AMD Phenom II dual core system, for example, goes for over $600. A P4 there still sells for $150! Crazy. I could make a killing if I took all my old stuff over there.

Also as a previous poster said, between imports fees, markup, and the markup to hack the dumb thing so it can play pirated games, it's a wonder people have them at all.

Prices pretty much always go up earlier/faster/farther than wages, so it doesn't balance out so nicely in practice.

That is crazy. It costs 3899kr or 599 USD here. I was thinking that was much...

In Argentina the import tarif is 50%, plus markup, plus cost of chipping the device and then markup on that. Electronics have always been ridiculously expensive there.

umm yes because there have been recent ass-hattery from Agentinia.. The war might have been 30years ago, doesn't change the fact there was a recent spike (esp around the london olympics and recently alongside spain an gibraltar) is BS from them

Let me chip in since im from argentina. The wages here do not match the cost of living
An average salary is 6-7k pesos, there is pretty much no way to buy US dollars for us, we have a parallel quotation. To buy foreign currency you have to get it approved by the AFIP (IRS equivalent) which supposedly checks your earnings with your ability to buy currency, which is bogus since its been shown in reports that 90% time the sistem says you dont have the economic capacity to even buy a dollar and the last 10% of the time the sistem is never up to buy the currency

Argentina is in the shitter economically speaking due to backwards politics that where put as patchs for obvious economic deficiencies that came from massive plundering from corrupt politicians and their friends. There is truly no future thinking here, we have senate elections on October and things are going to change there, and things are going to chance in 2015 and so on... there is no continuation of politics, no stability and no predictable policy to abide by and invest. So its one big plunder as much as you can before everything goes south

Not sure why this is news....Stuff in Brazil is super expensive as well (I visit there almost yearly to see the in-laws).

The rich people there will just have someone bring them back from basically anywhere else. It should be a non-issue.

In other news....the 2 stores in Chicago that carry 750ml bottles of Cachaca are $20-$25 USD.

In brazil a bottle is $2 USD. Waiting for outrage....*crickets*
