1) What will you be doing with this PC?
A lot of video processing. Taking video files off my video camera, editing them and uploading them to youtube. Some gaming, would like to play current games on at least medium settings.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$2000-$2500USD (tax and shipping included)

3) Which country do you live in?
Los Angeles, California

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget?
Case (want a bunch of usb and card reader ports on the front, willing to buy a card reader. Would like a nice one, my last one was an antec P182B)
Motherboard
CPU
CPU heatsink (I'd rather not use the stock one)
RAM
Power supply
HDD (need 5 terabytes)
DVD-ROM
GPU (“silent” one)
Case fans (“silent” ones)

I'm willing to buy multiple vendors. I'm assuming the silent parts I want are on more specialty websites.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing?
I’ll be reusing the monitor, USB keyboard, Logitech 7.1 speakers, and usb mouse.

6) Will you be overclocking?
I would like to do a mild overclock

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?

24inch 1920x1200

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
In the next 1-8 weeks

9) What features do you need in a motherboard?

USB 3.0
eSata

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?

Windows 7 64bit

What would you suggest I do with my old rig in my signature? If I reuse the case (antec P182) for the new build, all the parts inside would just collect dust. Can I sell it? Or should I just keep the case and parts intact for future trouble shooting/extra parts whenever the new build goes down? If I were to convert the old rig into a file server, I don’t think it would get much use.

Thanks for your help!

Since you emphasise noise control, check out my quiet PC rig in my signature. Just add a couple of 3 or 4 TB HDDs.

Do you have all of the funds you need to make your order by, say, next weekend?

Which games are you playing? Which games do you want to play?

Which programs are you using for your video editing?

Thanks Quartz-1, i'll look into that.

Yes I have all the funds to make a purchase this coming weekend.

I don't really have any games in mind. It would be nice to have a decent GPU in case I want to play some FPS or RTS in the future. I guess a mid range GPU would be fine.

I currently use Cyberlink's Power Director. When I get a new video camera i'll probably buy better video editing software. Maybe something like Sony Vegas.

Which version of Windows 7 64bit do you have? Pro or Home Premium?

You willing to go buy Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8? Those two OSes will allow you to use more than 16GB of RAM. Video editing can take up quite a lot of RAM.

I don't think i'll want that much ram. The video editing is a hobby and nothing professional.

Hmmmm..in that case, you wouldn't mind saving $100 by going with a cheaper CPU would you? I ask because if this was professional video editing, I would recommend the Core i7 4770K as it does have a decent enough performance increase in heavy duty video editing. if it is just a hobby, you'll be fine with the $100 cheaper Core i5 4670K.

So which option do you want?

I don't need the more powerful CPU. But I guess it depends on how much you spend on the other parts.

Oh, we could go for the more expensive CPU and you would still be way under budget:
$480 - Intel Core i7-4770K CPU + AsRock Z87 Extreme6 Intel Z87 Motherboard Newegg Combo
$115 - Crucial BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00 Ballistix Sport 2 x 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$400 - MSI N770 TF 2GD5/OC GTX 770 2GB PCI-E Video Card
$220 - Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD
$95 - Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$20 - LG GH24NS95B DVD Burner
$80 - Seasonic G Series SSR-550RM 550W Modular PSU
$75 - Noctua NH-D14 120mm and 140mm HSF
$230 - Silverstone FT02B-USB3.0 ATX Case

Total: $1715 shipped

Thanks Danny. That looks good. But I guess I should have noted that I don't want that big of a case.

I want something around the same size as the p182 which is:
21.3"(H) x 8.1"(W) x 19.9"(D)

The FT02 is:
23 x 13 x 30

Do you like the Antec P280?
20.7 x 9.1 x 22.1

I assume the mobo and GPU you selected would fit in the p280?

How easy is it to OC on the AsRock mobo? Could I do a 10-20% increase by tweaking the BIOS?

You could go for the mATX version of that motherboard and the Silverstone FT03. Do note that the FT02 and FT03 are rotated cases so the dimensions are going to be different.

If you go for the FT03, you'll need a slimline, slot-loading DVDRW.

I would not go for Danny's choice of Geforce 770 in a rotated case: you'll get better cooling overall and lower noise if the video card has a reference design which uses a blower fan because the hot air is exhausted directly so the CPU cooler doesn't use warmed air.

You might also consider the Nofan CPU cooler for $99.

if you are not going to use any add-in cards except for a GPU you could even go ITX with BitFenix Prodigy (250 (W) x 404 (H) x 359 (D) mm ) I don't know what that is in inches

I do but I don't think it's worth spending the money for if you already have a P182. If you were coming from a first-gen P180, yes an upgrade to a P280 would be fine. But since you have the P182, the FT02 is the next step up in noticeable cooling and noise level performance.

As for what Quartz-1 said, the fan on the reference card are generally noisy as is so while you might get lower CPU noise, you may get increased GPU noise. Also, I've never been a fan of the FT03 since it's ridiculously overpriced IMO. As for the NoFan cooler, entirely up to you but personally I wouldn't considering your plans for overclocking and the fact that the 4xxx series tend to run a little hotter than their IB predecessors. If you weren't overclocking, I'd say that NoFan would be viable.

It will.

Shouldn't be too hard. If you're talking about an overclocking performance increase through the UEFI (it's no longer BIOS FYI), that may vary depending on your luck

lol no system listed in here is eligible for nofan - not even CLOSE.

The system Danny recommended needs a CPU fan + GPU fan + (preferably) slow case fan. Still, those things can still be quiet.

The 30inch depth of the FT02 is too big for where I can put the case.

If I re-use my p182 case, what should I do with all the old hardware inside? Should I recycle it? Sell it? Give it away? I don't really have a use for turning it into a file server. I plan on keeping the old GPUs and HHDs just for troubleshooting/back up purposes.

Keep it for troubleshooting purposes for the GPU and PSU.

Sounds good. I'm going to buy the antec p280 though. I like the mic/usb ports on the top of the case and I can just leave my old hardware in the p182 case and deal with it later.

Thanks for your help. I'm buying the rest of the parts you suggested right now.
