So my Internet went to crap and decided to check my speeds. The results from the test was 32ms ping / .33 Download / 10 Upload. I'm suppose to have 50 Mb Down / 10 Mb Up. I called Comcast and I told them that something is throttling my download speed. The only thing the rep could do is ask me to connect directly to the modem and rerun the test. I got the same exact speeds. She said it was my modem. Since I'm leasing my modem I told her I would just buy a new modem. She said don't because DOCSIS 4.0 modem are getting released next month.

Well, after surfing the Internet, I can't find any information on DOCSIS 4.0 much less anything about 4.0 modems be released. I was just wondering if any one has any information about DOCSIS 4.0?

She was fucking with you. Get a Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 such as the SB6121 or SB6141. You won't regret either one. :)

i've had terrible luck with both SB's on comcast in the midwest. Constant drops even though I had a great signal on them. i got a zoom 5341j and i love it, no drops no nothing.

or send the rental back and annoy the crap out of Comcast and get them to either fix the problem remotely over the phone or send someone over there to give you the service you're paying for.

If you're already paying the $3-8 modem fee or whatever the hell it is since everybody seems to play fuck fuck games with that these days, you might as well get your pennies worth. Once the problem is resolved then I'd buy a new modem just out of spite.

I think she probably meant DOCSIS 3.1(not 4) modems will be available next month. Since they are next standard for cable modems and Comcast said they will be first to implement them. (read it somewhere Pcworld, stop the cap)

3.1 is the next tech version of DOCSIS, she couldn't tell you correctly obviously. Motorola and Scientific Atlanta are heading the tech on the 3.1 release, I would either buy a modem yourself (which pays for itself in a year) or wait the month or two and get the new modem when they are released from Comcast.

The DOCSIS 3.1 spec won't be finalized until next year at the earliest.

The rep may have been speaking of a D3.0 modem with some new chipset, but it's unlikely to be D3.1 and definitely not 4.0,

Take the board's recommendation and get a Motorola modem or my pick an Arris D3.0 modem.

If you're LEASING the modem from them, why didn't you tell them to send you a new one?

Better yet, why didn't she offer to send you a new one once she came to the conclusion it was your modem in the first place?

Sorry, I did and just didn't put it in the original topic. She is sending a new modem anyway.

There is only such thing as 3.0 DOCSIS no such thing as 4.0 DOCSIS. Also the 3.1 DOCSIS post to carry upto 10Gbps down and 1Gbps upload.

Docsis 3.1 is something to likely be skeptical about.

There was very little talk about it until Google Fiber decided to land in Austin.

The bandwidth increases and technology shift is large enough that if it wasn't pie-in-the-sky, I would think they would be calling it DOCSIS 4.0.

I'm not going to hold my breath for it. It's a placeholder while the Cable companies get their Fiber roll-out plans in place. (in my conspiracy theorist mind)

That all said, CableLabs hasn't even set a ballpark date for a standard to be submitted, and BEST case scenario is that CPE will be released late 2014, early 2015, if you believe even that hype. Because of the type of technology shift it is, Cable MSO's are going to have to make HUGE changes to their networks, and optimization of plant, and segmentation to implement it.

1) Customer service for Comcast is just like the cell phone companies....you tell them about a phone that is going to be released to them and they have no clue about it.
2) Your modem isn't bad.....your TX or RX is fubr most likely.
3) You should always ask for a tech to come out to verify everything in the house is straight. Ingress could also be an issue.
4) Never listen to over the phone trouble-shooting when it comes to cable co's.....their training is 2 weeks long and involved more of dealing with irate customers than actual technical training.

I speak this as a former Comcast on-site technician who would routinely take customer service rep's on ride outs so they can see how crappy they make our job.

You're wasting your time. You should call back and cancel the modem to be sent to you and request a tech.

Because this is what will happen (happens every time)....youll get the modem, it may show great speed for a day then go back to what your slow speeds were before.....then youll get a tech to come out to replace the modem again then he will troubleshoot.....

So 3 modems later your issue maybe resolved.

Just sayin~
