Dell monitor 2209WA is starting to flicker after a couple minutes?

I've had this Dell 2209WA monitor along with 2 others for a few years now & no issues with any of them. Recently one of them started to flicker with tiny white lines going across it horizontally.

Any idea what is causing this & how to fix it?

I tried changing the refresh rate from 59mhz to 60mhz (max possible) and it's still giving me the same issue. I also restored to factory settings.

If I shut off the monitor for a couple minutes it will be normal for a few minutes & then go back to flickering.

Anyone know how long dell warranties their monitors?

Thanks.

IIRC it's a 5 year warranty on the ones I have.
That sucks though.
Have you tried using Powerstrip?
I was able to get my 2209WA's to go 1920x1080 at 72Hz and 75Hz but looked better at 72

Yes I like these monitors a lot, awesome when 3 are edge to edge too.

I tried looking on the monitor for a Service or Express tag & can't find anything. I even took the monitor off the mount & looked there & there is nothing.

I tried downloading & running dell's online Auto Tag Detector but it isn't coming up with anyone for any reason.

They still have to be under warranty then, I've only had them about 3 years I'd say.

Is there any other way I can figure out the Service tag #?

I'm not familiar with Powerstrip, what is it?

Of course today the monitor seems to be ok, but it's been happening at random times over the last few weeks, I'd like to get it swapped out with the warranty if possible.

I don't want to have to upgrade monitors until I go 3 touch screens edge to edge :D

No service tag numbers on monitors. The serial number will be enough to check and claim warranty. The serial number is hidden in the secret panel on the back of your monitor, behind where the USB slots are on the side.

Awesome info, thank you! I found the serial # & will report back to Dell. When I called them without the S/N, just the model # they told me it only had a 1 year warranty...

Suiken how old is your monitor & did you use it a lot?

The problem is if they replace the monitor (even under warranty) will the new one be comparable ?

Dell will probably not have a 2209wa in stock, either new or refurbished, as was the case when I asked for a replacement late last year.

Dell sent me a u2212h at first, which was returned due to being inferior and having PWM flicker worse than any display I've seen. After complaining, Dell then sent me a u2311h. While it was CCFL and had no visible flicker, the colours were nowhere near that of the 2209wa. In the end I returned both and decided to fix the buzzing 2209wa myself.

My suggestion would be to look at last years models around the 22-24" mark and make them aware of which you'd prefer if they can't source another 2209wa. It will save the headache of returning something inferior later.

As for buying second hand, I would recommend asking the seller to check the service menu for hours used. One of my 2209wa has 8,000 hours on the clock and needs to be run at 100% brightness - new it only required 12% brightness.

How does one check the monitor service menu for total hours used?

I was finally able to get a hold of someone in the tech department to file a warranty claim. They said the monitor has a 3 year warranty.

I also told them I need the same monitor because I have 3 & want/need them all to be the same. They said they understand & should be able to provide me with the same monitor. The dept was closed today to do the final push, so they are calling me back tomorrow.

Hopefully all goes well. Of course the monitor has been fine lately, but I'd still like to swap it out while the warranty is still good.

Turn monitor off. Hold brightness and menu button, then press power button. Press brightness button when on to access service menu.

Ok here are the 3 monitors, the one with the issue also has double the hours as the other 2.

How do the rest of the values look on all 3 monitors? Seems the two good ones are almost identical except for the 41m/51m difference on the time - what is this exactly?

The third ones value's & time are much different than the other two.

I see one has the "Burnin" value set to on, what is this & should I turn that one off or the other two on?

I didn't hear from dell today, I'm going to call them in a little bit to get an update with my claim.

Ok so I received a new (refurbished) monitor from dell yesterday and as much as I requested and told the guy I need the exact monitor because I have 3 all in a row, I want them all the same for visual & aesthetics purposes.

They sent me a P2213

It is MUCH lighter & thinner than my monitors, but isn't a crazy high end LED or anything.

In a quick comparison I think the colors looks a bit washed out compared to the other ones.

Dell called and went over everything & they said that they don't have any more of my monitors (understandable) but that the one that they sent was an "upgrade" from my originals. I'm not sure if I beleive that.

Is a P2213 better than my 2209WA?

Anyone? After side by side comparison the 2213 doesn't seem to be as bright or vivid & looks washed out, even when I tried adjusting the brightness & contrast.

It REALLY goes down hill when lookin from the side or the top, the 2209's hold their color perfectly from different angles. There's no way the 2213's are truly an upgrade from 2209's, but is still like to hear others input.

I brought up my concerns with Dell how I'm not happy with this as a replacement and they said they will call me today for additional options.

Ahh that's right, it's the IPS aspect that makes my monitors so high end correct?

Does dell still make an IPS monitor? If so they should have sent me that one then for a comparable model, not just based on the 22" size which seems is all they did to match my current one.

What makes IPS monitors so special & high quality that the TN models don't have/offer?

So dell said they would replace the 2213 monitor they sent me since it's not up to my specs.

They don't have any of the 2209WA left so they said I could pick a monitor off of their website (within a reasonable price range obviously)

What monitor on their website would compare to the 2209WA IPS monitors I currently have?

My main issue with the 2213 replacement monitor they sent me is that I can't see a full, vivid image from every angle & being a web designer & having 3 monitors edge to edge, this is vital. The current IPS monitors I have are awesome from any & every angle with no shadowing or white washing.

So being completely blind as to know what to look for, I'm hoping one of you guys can point me in the right direction to get a monitor that suits my needs & requirements.

Should I be looking under the "Ultra Sharp" category?

I've found 4 monitors & they're split down the middle between image contrast ratio

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...333&prods=320-9800,320-9791,320-9803,320-2807

Which one of these 4 would you guys choose & why?

The only differences I could find are:

Image Contrast Ratio
1,000:1 (Typical) / 8 million:1 (Dynamic)

Image Contrast Ratio
1000: 1 (typical) / 2 Million:1 (Dynamic Contrast Ratio)

I assume I want the one with 8 million : 1 - the higher the better right? I do NOT want the 2million if I can get an 8 million monitor?

I also see one of the monitors has no DVI hookup, but HDMI - which will give me a better quality picture? I can do either with my graphics card but the 2209WA monitors don't have HDMI so I just run DVI.

Also it seems the 21.5" HD LED doesn't have a power plug & must get power from the DVI cord?

Dynamic Contrast Ratio is pure marketing bullshit for desktop monitors. You ever watch a film on a crappy LCD TV and see the darkness being adjusted up and down? You would never use this for your monitor.

The four monitors you list are the P2314H, P2214H, S2240M and U2312HM. You might think of the first letter in Dell's monitor names as P = consumer, S = premium consumer, U = professional. Of the four, the U2312HM would be the best.

There's a big thread about the U2312HM so it's quite well understood here, and scanning the last few pages of the thread briefly it seems to have been a good monitor.

Ok so I'll try for U2312HM and if they won't go that high in value then the S2240M is the next best choice?

That one is new & has a delivery time of 3-5 weeks so I hope they can get one of them out quick.

Hoping to hear from dell today, anyone have any other better suggestions as to what I should get from dell's website other than U2312HM or S2240M?

I have used the 2209WA for almost 3 years now without any issues. Just bought a 23" Dell IPS touchscreen monitor and the picture quality was horrible compared to the 2209WA. The colors and black levels simply do not match the 2209WA. I'm in the middle of returning it right now. Has Dell's quality gone down even for their IPS monitors? Very disappointed that they even call it an IPS.

Well they were nice enough to send me the U2312HM hope it's gonna be good & pair up well with my other two 2209WA's
