Hello All,

I am wanting to know how to password lock and encrypt a directory in windows 8.

Im wanting to keep a soft copy of all my installation keys for software and usernames/passwords somewhere and not have it easially accessible in case my laptop for whatever reason dissapears

You might try www.lastpass.com which will keep encrypted passwords and keys for you. That way you can access the information from other computers if you ever need to.

A simpler method might be to have a normal document and put it in a password-protected ZIP file or PDF.

Neither of those methods are secure at all.

LastPass is one of the best options here. TrueCrypt is another decent option. Depending on your Windows SKU, you could use Bitlocker with a PIN.

Why dont you just make a true crypt container and be done with it?

This. I'd highly recommend TrueCrypt, since you can keep more than just a text document in it. I TrueCrypt archived tax returns, bank statements, pretty much everything that's even remotely sensitive.
