needing docks greatly limits the selection of laptops. i hate needing a dock. however, at work we have dual 27" 2560x1440 monitors so currently we use lenovos and their docks with the dual display ports on them.

what is an alternative dock for a laptop like the dell xps line or the razer 14 that will allow for the monitors to be used?

I don't think laptop docks are universally compatible... I might be wrong though.

aren't there usb docks or lightning port docks? somewhere i read about daisy chaining display port monitors

Razer laptops aren't going to have the docking capability you are looking for.

Nor will the XPS line for that matter. You'll need to look into Dell's business class machines for docking capability. E.g. Dell's Latitude and Precision lines, and for these you will need a Dell dock as they are not compatible with the Lenovo docks.

There are thunderbolt docks if you're using a laptop with support. But no usb 3.0 dock is going to drive dual 2560x1440 monitors.

exactly, i want a solution for laptops that do not dock

If you do not want to deal with docks then Thunderbolt and/or DisplayPort 1.2 (assuming compatible monitors or a hub) are your only real options. That, or a laptop with multiple video outputs which support high resolution displays.

What monitors do you have? They will need DP out connectors to daisy chain natively. Alternatively, DP 1.2 hubs (which split a single DP 1.2 input into multiple DP connections) are available, but you would need one for each pair of displays, thus increasing costs.

But what specific model? E.g. the U2713H has DP out, but the U2713HM does not.

Just get a McBook Pro retina.
2x Thunderbolt/Mini-DP ports and HDMI.

I have the hp3000pr. I use it with my surface pro and 2 Asus 1440p 27' lcds. The lcd driven through the dock displays spreadsheets and streams from youtube and Netflix. There is some mouse lag if you use the dock lcd as the "main" monitor but for my uses it does just fine. One thing to keep in mind is the more "stuff" you do on the usb monitor the more cpu it uses. So having a faster cpu will help performance, I'm using the i5 3317 in the surface.

Let me know if you figure it out...

I just put the new 14" blade on order and hope to develop with it at work. 2 screens is a minimum :p

The only other machines with such capability would be the MSI GT series and the clevo machines that can power an HDMI and DP output.

Or the 9390 from clevo (17.3" and dual GPU I know) but does come with a thunderbolt port.

Its probably wayyyy too huge in terms of size but my previous Asus G75VW could run the internal screen plus 3 others if you used the display port hdmi and vga out. Even without using the displayport you could use the notebook screen plus 2 others.

Just thought i'd provide an update regarding performance at 2560x1440 via the HP usb 3.0 dock.

Normally I use it with my surface pro (i5 3317u) and it works good although I can "feel" some lag and sluggish performance at times depending on how much stuff is going on on the usb monitor. If i'm watching youtube videos or streaming a video the video will not stutter but cpu usage is quite high and the mouse will lag on that screen. If its something more static like spreadsheets of a simple web page no problems at all still feels a bit slow but not by much.

I plugged the Dock into my I5 3570K desktop (oc'd to 4.3ghz) and nearly all the lag disappeared it almost felt like a native monitor not something driven through usb. SO obviously cpu performance is a big issue with these docks, if you have the cpu horsepower your experience is going to be much better. I was able to run google earth in full screen mode and didn't notice any more lag that when it was on my native monitor connected through displayport.

AFAIK no "universal" dock has multi monitor properties. All you can do is use the laptop display and a single display.

Dell, Lenovo, HP, and Fujitsu make laptops for docking stations that allow dual monitor support.

Side question for OP; What business are you in that you use a Razar as a business laptop??? I ask that because it doesn't strike me as a business style laptop unless your business is gaming or something to do with a computer store.

The HP dock mentioned above will do dual displays via hdmi and displayport, in addition to having gigabyte Ethernet , sound and extra usb ports.

We still don't know if he has Displayport 1.2 monitors, which would make this a whole lot easier with daisy chaining. There's no sense in even offering suggestions if he can't even tell us what equipment he's using.
