Humble Origin Bundle

so if EA/Origin/Steam are not associated with the promotion, who is actually behind this?

It's EA's promotion. They're sponsoring it and donating the proceeds to charity. Humble Bundle is the provider of the mechanism by which the promotion is offered, but they're a completely separate entity, unrelated to EA.

No, because it only works with OpenGL games apparently. D3DOverrider is required for Direct3D triple buffering (last time I checked, anyway...).

Roger that. I forgot that changed with the introduction of Vista.

Vista had nothing to do with that as that setting in control panel has always been for OpenGL only.

Damnit, I'm getting confused lol. You may be right, when I mentioned the change with Vista I was thinking Triple Buffering but according to the nVidia CP it applies to Vsync.

yeah and even that was fixed just a few driver versions later. vsync from cp works in every game since just a couple months after Vista came out.

Question on Crysis 2.

Does installing from either steam or origin include the DX11 high res stuff, or is that something you have to do separately?

you have to download and install the High-Res Texture Pack and DX11 upgrade separately...you need to have the 1.9 patch installed first...

It just reached 1 million sold... I think thats a first for humblebundle

I saw a blurb on CNet about it and some other media outlets. Never seen this level of exposure for a bundle before. I'm sure that contributed to the popularity. Add the fact that the titles included in this bundle are triple AAA quality and it's actually surprising they haven't sold at least 2 million of these bundles yet.

Why Origin sucks:

Spent two days downloading the games, they install...

And after launching the games, each have MULTIPLE ingame updates to download and install. Downloading a 2+GB expansion also results in a 100MB and 1.3GB (!) patch to install.

When you download a game on Steam, you get the most recent version.

the only game from the bundle I'm really interested in is Dead Space 3 (I already own Crysis 2 and Dead Space 1)...but others like Mirror's Edge and the Medal of Honor reboot are games I've had a slight interest in but only if it were dirt cheap...I think this sale qualifies :D

I've never been into the Battlefield series as I'm more of a Deatchmatch player versus team but BF3 is worth a try for the graphics alone...and maybe I'll change my mind about team based gameplay

Are you sure? also I thought Steam automatically patched your games up to date?

In Crysis 2 on Steam it said DX 11 card detected and asked me if I wanted to turn on DX11 I'm pretty sure, and it also has an option for "hi res textures" in the graphics options, I think it's on or off. So I'm pretty sure both DX 11 and high res textures are automatically in the game.

Also all my settings are ultra which I also believe is only available under Dx 11.

I have the boxed version of Crysis 2 and not the Steam version but I thought you still needed to download it separately since it's not technically a patch but an optional download...but since you say you have the High-Res texture and DX11 settings then it looks like Steam comes with it...but people should check for those options in their graphics options

Edit: did a little Googling and apparently the Steam Maximum Edition comes with the DX11 + high-res texture pack already installed...don't know if there's a non-maximum edition still available but looks like that still requires a separate download

Given the choice, I would rather have Dead Space 2 instead of MoH to complete the Dead Space collection. Still, can't complain for that price. There's always Steam sales for Dead Space 2 I guess :D

OK, well I hope you're right, but FWIW that screen cap was from my system and I'm running a fairly recent GeForce driver so they are still including that info in the control panel. This driver is waaayyyy newer than Vista so if what that says no longer applies then they need to fix the description of what that setting really does.

It seems an obvious candidate for being added to the bonus games next week.

last time I played there were several deathmatch BF3 servers running.. no teams on those servers

Would be great. If they all had Steam codes.
Yes it really would.

I have 216 games on steam and never had a problems with installing any of them. In origin i had about five games and had problems with installing 3 of them .

Only spent about 2 hours trying to get sims 3 to work... never could get it to actually install. Don't expect to get these games without some strife first.

I LOLd at this too. Downloaded game, started game -- oh, here's a giant patch for you. Whut?

Yeah, Origins download service leaves a LOT to be desired. Why they stick with the old download game then download patch method is a mystery to me.

Will paypal $1 for someone's Sims 3, lemme know =)
you can have mine if it works. someone might have taken the code without saying though as I posted it in another forum.

Sims 3 Starter Pack Origin Key
3QVA-H2WQ-25GR-JS3A

let me know if it works or if it does not though so I can delete it.

First game I downloaded on Origin of this bundle was Burnout Paradise. Tried to play and it crashes at the car selection screen every time. I saw online where this is a problem and there's some info on how to stop crashes in the Steam forums, but I don't know how to apply what I read to Origin. For example there's info on how to enable "multithread" when launching in Steam but I don't know how to do it for Origin. I tried changing to XP Service Pack 3 compatibility mode but that didn't help.

What is the fix you're trying to apply? Also the game does not require origin. you can close it and launch it from the shortcut.

Why not just activate the Steam key then?

Why not just activate the Steam key then?

Because I got the bundle for my son, and I let him have the Steam key. So I figured I'd just take the Origin key...no big deal, right? Maybe it'd do the same thing on my PC if I had installed in Steam but I just have the feeling it has something to do with the Origin version. He finished downloading the Steam version tonight, and it did work on his PC.

The "fix" that I wanted to try to apply was setting a Launch Option. On the Steam forums someone said one of the things to try was to go to the games Launch Option and type "multithread" if you were using a multicore cpu. I tried Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode but that didn't work. I might try updating the video drivers tomorrow but I don't think that will matter considering how old this game is and the drivers I'm using now are still considerably newer than when the game came out.

.....w t f? EA? Lol. Must be desperate. Also where's cry sis 3?

It's a dollar dude, it's for a good cause. Also if you wanna pick and choose then pony up. ;)

The interesting part of this to me is this:

EA isn't taking any profit from this (although I'm sure they're writing it off in taxes). A pretty decent thing for them to do.

I agree with you 100 percent.

Just run it from the Windows shortcut then with the launch option. Origin is not required for this game.

This would be a great deal if Origin didn't suck absolute dick. Been attempting to download deadspace 3 for the last few hours (11MB/s, so shouldn't take long...) but it continually "fails". No message, no error, the download progress just stops and jumps back a few gb every few minutes. It's ridiculous. Anyone considering giving EA any money via the humble bundle, please don't.

When installing I chose the option not to make a shortcut; I figured I wouldn't need it since I could just launch it from Origin. However I did try just launching from the .exe file but instead of starting the game all it does is bring up Origin. So I'm not sure the shortcut would launch the game any way if I can't even do it from the burnoutparadise.exe file.

Dunno about the Origin version, but I can confirm that the Steam one runs right from the exe in its download folder. You can add command line options to it. Maybe getting that one instead will fix your problem?

If anyone has a Burnout Paradise for Steam code they want to get rid of PM me. I tried everything with the Origin version and it won't work; just keeps crashing. I'd like to try it on Steam to see if I have any better luck.

Right click the EXE and say.. Create Shortcut lol. If you cant figure that out. see below.

Right click the game in Origin and go to "Game Properties" add the command there.

You're making this way to hard for yourself. Origin is easy to use.. and just as easy as steam if not easier.
