I currently have a samsung galaxy nexus on VZW on contract.

I can upgrade in six days and im not sure what to get.

I wanted a qualcomm 800 device, but it seems those are still a little far away, I'd like to upgrade now, before classes start.

I see a few choices for things that should be available in august: Moto X, samsung s4, moto maxx, moto ultra, and maybe HTC one if the august 15 rumors are true.

I was surprised to see that I can find the moto maxx new, huge battery one for $199, instead of the vzw.com price $299 on wirefly.com I'm not too sure about its specs though...

I also see the samsung s4 for $149 16gb/$199 32gb which has the qualcomm 600 from amazon.

moto x is supposedly coming on the 23rd for $199?

I went to the vzw store and saw the current droids, the htc dna and s4, out of those I liked the s4 the best, but I didn't like the UI/skins, I prefer my stock android with nova launcher.

Just wanted to know what you guys are leaning towards being the best phone right now.

Edit: of course I forgot the Moto X in the poll... well it seems awfully close to the Moto Maxx I guess?

I'd wait until September to see what the Note 3 will be like then make my decision.

Hmmm... I thought I could make a decision by now, but I haven't.

I see the Note 3 on the way, and the hardware looks exactly like what I want, but the screen size I think would be too big, at 5.68". I don't need the pen either which seems like its the main selling point. I think a good spot is around 4.6-5 screen.

I went into bestbuy and the galaxy s4 does look good... but It seemed to actually lag pretty badly. It also didn't seem to offer any real improvements, like going from a 2.3 phone to a 4.0, or something like that. it seems like its just a spec upgrade, and touchwiz seems to make it just as fast/slow on the homescreen as my Gnex.

I looked up some videos on the moto x / droid maxx, and that did look enticing, the call droid feature (i always lose my phone in the house) the motorolla assist, the notification screen, mostly stock UI, and the HUGE 3500MAH battery.

but the phone seemed to have a very pink collor when you view white stuff compared to the HTC one / s 4, (I saw them all compared at once in a vid)

The camera is also said on every review that can take stunning or completely horrible / over procssed shots.... I could live with the dual core, but screen/camera seems to be lacking as-well...

Really not sure what to get anymore, not really liking anything I see so far.

Just want a decent camera, good screen, good specs in a 5" format, (and maybe something that shows why its worth an upgrade, or what a Gnex can't do that it can) without laggy skins or gimmicks.

I guess I'll wait? but im not sure what to wait for.... Note 3 is too big, G2 is said to have the worst UI ever seen, HTC one MAX is even bigger than note 3 (5.9).... the iphone 5s/6 is an iphone...

Help me [H]!

Note 3 should be the same size as the note 2 if you can handle that (not screen size but the size of the phone). I was looking forward to the G2 until I saw the branding and ui. By the time the One Max hits verizon it will be 2015 (lol).

Personally, I'm most interested in the Moto X depending on how cheap I can get one in the secondary market. It's not ALL about the specific hardware.

i'm in the exact same boat. my upgrade starts tomorrow. nexus has served me well, but with poor 4G battery life, I'm ready to upgrade. unfortunately the only thing that looks appealing right now is the note 3, and its not available.... damn.

30-45 days hold on. Samsung will launch it a few days before the iphone 5s if they're smart.

Completely different smartphone market, if they are smart they will just concentrate getting it out to everyone prior to the holidays.

Im talking about the note3.

People who are looking at phones like the note3 are doing it based on size primarily.

People who buy iphone do it for the practicality of the software.

Seperate markets, the S4 is the iphone competitor. I like to consider the note a wildly success that keeps samsung ontop of android.

People buy an iPhone because of the support and insane amount of cheap accessories.

I am considering getting the S4 or HTC next like the OP and I am dreading leaving the iPhone 4s ecosystem simply because of the cheap iPhone stuff out there.

There's a few more reasons people get iPhones, I'd say: consistently strong camera (GS4 is bad in low light, One is bad in bright light), genuinely good support for offline media and syncing, and a continued tendency to get apps both first and at higher quality.

That and Apple has inadvertently been left carrying the torch for those who want high-end phones in smaller sizes. I know quite a few people who like Android (myself included) but who are annoyed that OEMs "punish" you if you dare ask for less than a 4.7-inch screen. The iPhone 5 still feels very much like a flagship outside of its screen size -- fast, great screen quality, top-notch camera. I actually want a bigger model, but part of me will miss seeing a high-end 4-inch iPhone if it goes away in 2014.

Verizon's One was supposed to launch today according to the last leak/rumor.

I guess that isn't happening.

Screw Verizon, so glad I left those Nazis. They don't care about customers, just about raping people for the most outrageous insanely crazy high prices. And top it off, with them taking long to get the hot new phones, not just a few weeks after everyone else, but sometime months later

I fully concur.

They have the best network in tue US though and I wouldn't save much money going anywhere else with the same service that I have right now (unlimited everything w/ 1400 mins for about $135/month). So I'll deal with them as long as I can keep my current plan.

The One is coming out August 22nd on Verizon.

Yeah, it's nice that they finally announced/acknowledged it somehow. At least it's shipping with 4.2.2 on Verizon. That was somewhat surprising. Can't wait to play with all these new phones at Verizon and figure out which one to go with.

I have a razr maxx. (non HD) and I say get GS4 if you don't care about battery life.

Honestly, if you need one now, I'd probably go with the S4.
If you're willing to wait, there's:
Moto X, New Droids (Maxx, Ultra, Mini), Note 3, new iPhone (possibly 2 versions?), as well as maybe some other offerings before the holidays. I'll most likely hold out for the Note 3, or see the reviews for the new set of Droids. Not much for their UIs but their batteries are beast.

I think I made my decision.. it took a while and all of them look really compelling.. but I'll wait for the note 3.

Hopefully i can handle its size!

Thanks again for the suggestions.

I just got the Droid Maxx and it's awesome. I used the GS4 since release day and used the RAZR HD and GS3 for 3months each before that. Perhaps I'm still in the honeymoon phase but I like this phone significantly better than all of them. The only thing I miss is the eye sensor thing on the samsungs for when I'm reading articles.

Active display and the battery life are both spectacular!

I would love to see more phones with the active display technology, I believe lg and moto are going to be pushing this.

Should have just got this for the S4 and had the best of both worlds. I don't think the added bulk is that big of a deal and definitely worth the trade off. I'm really tempted to get the 9300 mAh battery for my Note 2, but it's hard to justify when the stock battery gets me through the day just fine and I'm rarely away from a charger.

Oh man, just when I thought I made up my mind... lol.

the three big things I was afraid about on the maxx are screen (reviewers say s4/htc one look better), SoC, and camera.

Camera wise you aren't going to get a stellar experience anyways. As far as screens you really should see them in person before you decide, that is the most important part, what YOU want, not what is technically better.

For some SAMOLED is amazing, for some its too much and hate it.

For some they love regular no frills TFT LCD screens, for some they are too washed out.

For IPS screens they provide the best mix of brightness and color accuracy, for some they don't pop enough. (I really love the screen on the Droid DNA/Butterfly :D)

Due to my employer my 'upgrades' are at no cost. And I seem to prefer Moto anyways for build quality and signal strength. If you go with the Maxx I'd get the $3 extended warranty through VZW because it will cover the internal battery should it start to not hold as much of a charge in a year and you could get a replacement for it.(drawback of embedded battery)

The screen difference was negligible for me, both are great.

Haven't used the camera yet, but the GS4 camera was awesome.

Big drawback for me was no SD card slot... I have a 32GB card I use in most of my phones, if you need that obviously go with the S4. I think I will be able to manage around it.

I also like the touch screen home button over the physical key and I slightly prefer the interface over touchwiz.

Wireless charging is another cool feature but obviously not a must have.

Dad got the Droid Maxx.

Phone is the best droid yet and makes me excited for the X. It's definitely the best experience I've had on an android phone - liquid smooth and VERY fast and responsive - to the point where I'd say that it's at an iOS level of responsiveness.

As usual, battery life in unbelievable as you'd expect. I'd say the current drawbacks are lack of accessories on the market (don't know why this is) and camera is not the best out there but other than that, I have no problem recommending this phone to anyone who wants a near stock android experience.

How about the upcoming LG G2 ??

Operating system: Android 4.2.2
SoC: Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974
CPU: 2.26 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Krait 400
GPU: Adreno 330 GPU
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Storage: 16 GB or 32 GB
Removable storage: microSDXC up to 64GB (South Korean variant only)
Battery: Non-removable Li-Pol 3,000 mAh
Removable Li-Pol 2,610 mAh (South Korean variant)
Display 5.2 in (130 mm) diagonal
Full HD IPS LCD 1920x1080 (424 ppi)
Rear camera 13 MP OIS, LED flash
Front camera 2.1 MP

Spec's read nice but I tell everyone to wait for a phone to come out and see some hands on reviews first.

The biggest thing you want in a phone is screen response, screen quality and if the phone is smooth enough to not piss you off (ie: jitters/lags/freezes/kills your dog).

Kills your dog? Rofl :D

Yeah, the G2 looks more bloated and uglier than Samsung's current UI. It also somehow beats Samsung in unorthodox features with its weird back-button placement and knock-to-wake feature. I wouldn't be surprised if it still manages to lag with its bleeding-edge specs. LG has a habit of launching phones with the latest and greatest before anyone else, then somehow ruining the phone with either bad quality control issues or non-existant software support. I'm not sure if any Optimus G owners are even on 4.2 yet despite it being a friggin Nexus 4 clone and 4.2 being available for the last 10 months.

It does indeed look good, on paper atleast. size too.

I haven't seen a phone with those buttons yet, would need to test.

Also, its been announced a month ago, still no release date, or even rumored release date.

WE WANT YOU TO BUY OUR AWESOME PRODUCT!

okay when does it come out?

STAY TUNED! maybe it'll be months!

the people that had hands on time with it said that its UI was the worst thing they ever saw, even compared to touchwiz/ the old motoblur....

I went to a vzw store, I tested a droid maxx and was pretty disappointed by the screen, im near sighted so I can really see the detail. When there was white lettering/wording and a black background the top of the word/letter was like fuzzy, or discolored. I think my Gnex does a better job at that, even though its pentile.

it was fast though.

Still waiting, probably for the note 3!
