7950 3GB (MSI) $180 after $30 MIR card

Dammit. I did it. $180 - my 1GB 6950 = $80. Why not?

Not too concerned. I don't OC vid cards and wear headphones while gaming.

Hmmm. i dunno only if it can overclock to at least 1100.otherwise i wont seriously consider moving from my myst 7870LE (Tahiti) which can hit 1200 and run with the early 7970's

They're not too bad.

The cooler does suck though as it only cools the GPU.

Mine is about a year old when they first came out and I just slapped on an accelero.

My OCs go:
1200/1700 for benchmarks
1100/1600 for regular gaming

Here is an old pic of mine with CCC limits

So reading a bit more, the clock speed on my 6950 (870) is faster than the 7950 (840)? So I guess I really have to OC it to make it worth while. Was expecting a pretty big increase in performance w/o OCing.

This seems like a great deal, although if it runs that hot and needs a $60 cooler on it, I don't know if it's such a good deal... you might as well buy one with a better cooler for $40 more.

Yeah, it's definitely worth it to get the TF3 version for $240 and it has a 3 year warranty.
Those cards also have voltage control.

That's a weird 7950, shows on newegg as 840 mhz core with 850 boost clock? Wat?

I thought this was a misprint but MSI's site shows the same thing.

Normally AFAIK 7950 stock are 850, and the normal boost ones boost to 925.

Also the package on MSI website shows R7950? As if R7950 might be a different chip designation?

It's almost like a weird, reject 7950 SKU or something. I'm wondering if it has extremely poor overclocking, so they dropped the stock clock 10 mhz, then advertise it as a "Boost edition" cause it boosts a whole 10 mhz (back to original stock clock)?

Also, that particular model of 7950 is always the cheapest one over the last few weeks at newegg. I've noticed it and it's odd clocks before.

I dunno, I'd get that other, legit 7950 currently for 220 AR.

As far as video cards go or even CPUs you can't just go based on clocks like 900MHz vs 900MHz or SPU count vs SPU count, you have to take into consideration the architecture they use as well as other parts of the card.

6950/70 is still a good card but the 7950/70 are based off of a new architecture (GCN) and they perform faster when compared clock per clock from previous gen. Also when it was released it wasnt fully tapped out yet (maybe intentional :p ) but they pretty much squeezed out more performance after more driver releases and optimizations for games.

So with that saying, if you have a game that runs good on a previous gen, since new drivers aim at improving the new gens they will perform better.

Also when AMD first released the cards they had reference based which was clocked really low 830/850/900 whatever, but the potential of the chip was pretty much 1000/1100/1200 etc... So when nVidia cards started coming out with their dynamic overclock AMD started releasing their GHz edition and Boost edition which leveled out the playing field a little bit because we know the stocks of the 7k series were pretty low.

I think I will pass on these cards for now and wait until they come bundled with new games (Never settle forever) again.

They might, but aren't games normally bundled with newer video cards? Seems like there will be a refresh soon

Could be, but that would only drive the prices down on the current stock even further, no? From what little I have been able to scrounge up it would seem the new line of cards (9000 series) are due in October and the next Never Settle bundle should be out sometime this month.

If anyone has any concrete information it would be appreciated.

I think the prices have been driven down.... This card was not sub $200 6-12 months ago

But remember that nvidia and AMD have a habit of renaming cards to re-release in the next market year. So, is it possible for tahiti's to come back in the 8000 series in some way and therefore include never settle bundles.

This seems to be a one time deal and for a limited time only. I am thinking about price cuts across the board - perhaps without the use of mail in rebates. :(

I think the 7950 was originally $450 and the 7970 was $550. So yeah, huge price drop.

Should also keep in mind these cards have been out since december 2011, I've had my 7970 since january 2012. Still is a good deal, my friend on a budget picked one up, way better than a 660 or 7870 for being priced similarly. Last I looked the 660ti was still around 250

This doesn't really make sense to me, as the GTX 760 is priced at $250. I guess Nvidia isn't interested in clearing out old stock quickly

My guess is cardmakers wants people to buy the 760, rather than a discounted 660 Ti.

But prices are starting to break on the 660 Ti, the Asus is $199 right now, unless the code has expired.

yeah new never settle bundle will be for the new cards not the older 7 series

Looks like you were wrong.

Now AMD is offering people the chance to pick from 3 games (7900) from the Never Settle bundle. As Guru3d pointed out, however, you do not have to cash them in yet. You can wait until they add newer titles if you like. Looks like you can hoard it until the end of this year.

As a final “wait there’s more!” encore, the Gaming Evolved Forever “credits” don’t need to be redeemed right away and can be used for future titles instead. Their expiry date is December 31st 2013 but supposedly AMD will be adding some amazing games to their lineup before Christmas so you may want to hold on until then.

Got mine in last night, it significantly outperforms my 6950 but it's much louder. Temps cap around 80 when it's screaming.

Going to try to get the never settle key code from newegg/MSI.

Also, can't get CCC to install. Did the uninstall, sweeper, and googled for hours, but CCC will not install correctly. Oh well, guess I'll use afterburner instead.

David, try a sweep of your net frame work with a sweeper that you can find online.
First uninstall your amd drivers
then use the sweeper to clean net frame work and restart your pc.
then install your amd drivers (express) restart your pc and you should be good to go.
Hope it works for you, this is the problem I was having for months.

Yeah, from what I was reading, it could be related to the net framework. I'll give this a go tonight.

yeah, afterburner works fine if you have your .net framework updates installed.

Spoke to NewEgg, the new promo started 8/12 (Gold reward, 3 games). But if you're friendly, you might be able to talk them into it.. ;)
