A couple of notes first off. This system will be one of a few dedicated windows based servers for my company, one for each user. Originally we were going to setup our own larger server running VPS for each trader but that is taking to much time to figure out and get moving on. Largely in part of the IT guys at the firm were we would be stashing it at.

In the mean time, my boss is adamant about the type of system Im looking for including the power he wants for it. These systems will be heading to an office in downtown Chicago and will be accessed by way of logmein, for the time being at least. Possibly using RDP through a VPN later down the road, but that's a different hurdle to deal with later. For now we are looking for around 5 of these mini pc.

Function: To act as a windows based server running our trading programs remotely. Users will be logging in remotely from around the country via logmein, RDP or some other means.

Want: Looking for mini pcs, using windows 7/8 (ONLY windows), boss wants intel i7/5, around 8 gigs of ram, ideally would like to use a SSD HD (but ONLY if it is reliable) and will use a virtual monitor, so ideally having a DVI port would work best. Dont need wifi, RJ45 port is a MUST have.

Cost: preferably around $500ish per machine but workable as needed.

Security: Given these are mini pcs and will basically be housed in a cubical at an office where non of our guys are at, I need to secure these in some manner. I was thinking of some sort of lock box that I can get a trusted guy I know working there a key in case we need him to get in there for what ever reason. It doesn't need to be big, just big enough to hold say at least 6 of these without being cramped or cause heat/air flow issues. Obviously would need some openings for the power/net cords.

Im comfortable enough to build my own pcs but would be much happier if there were pre-built ones I didnt have to do much work with. Maybe install a HD and windows at most. Again Id like to do SSD but Iv had some bad luck with some dying in the past on me. I need these minis to be as stable as possible given the requirements. Given I live an hour and half outside the city, trekking in to fix issues would be a pain.

I was looking at Zotac but heard they can be a pain warranty wise. Gigabyte is another option, Im just not sure what and where I should be looking. So given the suggested specs, what would [H] suggest?

Lastly the reason we are wanting to go with mini pcs is that we get one cubical to use at the firm. We don't want to load it up with mid to full size pcs, specially if we plan to still add a full VPS server later down the road for the rest of our traders. We have a little of 50 guys working for us, most want to take advantage of the purpose for these, which is speed. The office is piped in directly to the main trading servers. To give an example of the speed difference. We have a working test pc in there now, downtown Chicago, my boss uses this pc remotely from Florida, I live in the Chicago burbs. Our company created our own trading program, we both worked the same trade and got executed at the same time. He avg about a hundred bucks better then my trade. In our business, speed is key.

Thanks

I7 is $320, I5 $220, W7 or 8 is $80-130, psu $20-60, decent motherboard $50-75. 2TB HDD $100
Dell business off lease may have something.

Amazon for a Silverstone mATX case, microcenter for motherboard/CPU bundle, RAM will run $100 for non ECC 16 GB.
mATX is more for your money, better components per dollar. Just is.

HP does an inexpensive home server, about the best in your price range.

Do you happen to have a link to the HP one by any chance?

How small is mini:confused:

When I think mini I think mini-ITX motherboard.
Many micro ATX boards & cases are near the size of a mid-tower.

If space is a premium the mini-ITX can be built very small, but you'll pay a little more
$500 budget with windows & an i5 or i7 would be tight
