Sryy if this is the wrong thread, but my question is kinda weired.Atm i am trying to sell a dlsr and some lenses, and i got a pm from someone from another country saying he wants to buy.Aparently he is in UK atm and wants the items shipped to someone in Nigeria (yeah i know:)) .He said the price is ok and that i should send him my bank account, name ,phone number.Ok i know this seems/is a scam , but i am just wondering if he could use just these informations to hack me.Is it this simple,or just these informations alone are not enought. What about just a paypal account. That doesnt require a name or anything else.
I am from Romania ,this guys lives in Uk and wants the items shipped to Nigeria(lol)
Just to be clear i will not send any information back to this guy,i am just curious if these informations are enough for an account hack/scam.Its his 3 rd mail and i still didnt agree to anything, but he wants my bank account so he can send me the money immedialty:) kinda funny!
Thanks for any replies.:)

I'm not sure about the UK, but in the US, he would at least need a routing number as well. if someone has your routing and bank numbers, then they could withdraw money I think.

lol no, i don't think it works that way...

Name, bank account, and routing number is all he needs to print fake checks.

You can also use those 3 things to set up e-checks and/or automatic withdrawal from your checking account.

And if he needs your home address, that is easy enough to find out just by looking at your IP address / e-mail headers. Narrows it down to be able to find the exact address by searching for your name on a white pages site.

Check you this site:

It is fun to try to string these people along. I have done it every once in a while when I need a good laugh.

Getting routing numbers is really easy too. If you know the bank name and your general location, you can just google the banks list of routing numbers. I've done it because I had no idea what mine where when I was trying to order checks.

So yea, with just the info asked for, you could be "hacked" and out quite a bit of money.

Tks all for the great replys.Regarding paypal,is that safe?i mean it doesnt require any names, account numbers, adresses etc.

Yes, paypal is pretty safe especially if you pay by credit. then if you have to, you can do a chargeback. the sender will still see your name and address though.

also, don't click on any emails from paypal saying you received money, just login into your account from the web to check

When you setup preauthorized payments, all they need is the routing number, institution number and bank account number, so yeah, that's all that's really needed to withdraw money. What's odd is that all this info is also on a cheque... Never give a cheque to someone you don't trust.

I'm always surprised how much of society is reliant upon the illusion of security.

I'm also surprised at how many checkbooks our tenants leave behind.

"Secret" numbers (SSN, CC#, Bank account #) that you have to share with everyone for them to work is the cause of all this craziness.

As a seller of goods you should always have some sorta standard for yourself.

I personally would not do a bank x-fer....EVER in my entire life unlessit was for a car or something of major value where my bank manager is involved and the manager of the sellers/buyers bank was involved and only them 2. I would not give the seller/buyer my account info ever.

I would also never send anything over seas. North/South America sure.

Nothing in safe I don't care what people tell you. You give someone any information and if they are good enough they can find what they need in order to ruin your financial life.

Best advise? Don't do it. Never give personal info out to a stranger.

my double post virginity has been officially taken.....
