[USED] Ultimate File Server - 24 Bay SuperMicro Opteron Servers w/24 Port RAID $299+

Just got tracking for my DC.. Damn you [H]ot deals!!!

Now to decide.. six or quad core, go for clock speed or low power draw.. decisions...

I wonder how x264 would do on this thing with two Istanbul hexcores. I'm going to have to wait to find out it seems because the dual core is out of stock

Shoot'm a message through ebay, that's what I did a few days back when no DC's were listed, they responded within a few hours saying more would be up shortly.

There is a low power six core chip that will work ... don't recall the exact model of the chip but can be had for under $30 on ebay I think ?

Too many options on CPU's

$14 2.4ghz HE quad http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-OPTERON...DGI-/141024064718?pt=CPUs&hash=item20d5b074ce

$13 2.7ghz quad http://www.ebay.com/itm/130804591027?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

$19 (edit, now $45  )2.9ghz quad http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-OPTERON...10713133986?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=

Many 1.7-1.9ghz six cores around $15-30

The low power higher clocked quads and hex's start getting spendy.

Edit: Asked the seller with the 2389's above about possibly getting a discount on multiple CPU's, his response? Jacked up the buy it now price over x2  )

The seller with the 2384's is accepting offers at $12 a pop, at least in pairs.

So my DC should be here this week. Anyone know the best CPU I can throw in it? Do any of the quads work without bios updates? What is the difference between the 2xxx and 8xxx series?

The 2xxx can be used in dual socket systems, the 8xxx can be used in up to 8 socket systems. So for us there's no functional difference.

I think any socket F should work, but not sure about specific bios revisions/stepping support.

after seeing the power draw, I swapped out the MB/PSU for my old server and threw in a couple 140mm fans for a quiet lower powered but faster functioning box.

Wish I could pick one of these up... I'd probably ditch all the hardware though and put my own stuff in. I would like to expand my ZFS system. This would be a fantastic case.

Do those PCIX raid cards support NON-RAID mode ?

They're not RAID cards at all and only support what you're looking for.

Very nice deal, wish I Would have known about this over a year ago when I built a Norco 4224 with 48tb in Raidz2 with Xeon 1230 sandybridge 16gb ddr3 ecc!

I spent just that much on the case much less on the cpu/mobo/raid cards to support 24hdd! Might be good for a second one tho once this 48tb fills up :)

If you find a good price on heatsinks let us know :)

Well when I picked up mine I had grabbed some 1U copper heatsinks for $1.29 + shipping on ebay, but the seller has since raised the price to 11.99 + shipping.

But looking real quickly I found this. Which appears to be very similar to what was on the cpu when I received my server and at 6.25 + shipping is pretty reasonable.

Anyone running 64bit VM's on these?

The CPU specs show they should be able to.

However when loaded with esxi 5.1, I'm unable to do so. Not too familiar with AMD's lineup.

Thoughts?

I'm running ESXI 5.0 on mine and I'm able to run 64bit VM's. I have two 2212HE's in mine.

Everyone else's look brand new? Can't find a trace of dust or wear marks anywhere, fans look perfectly clean/new.

Still smells like new PC guts inside, intoxicating :p

Arrived well packed, clean mem test, now to wait for extra ram and CPU's to show up.

I wish I knew, mine went straight to the datacenter for racking ;)

Mine was pretty darn clean as well. Figure I will move 4gb or ram over and drop in a pair of quads if my DC is not up to the media server task.

Had to use a dolly to move this thing around. Was the most well packed used piece of equipment I have ever seen. 3" of foam all the way around it.

After reviewing this. ..review.. I figure the ~$13 2384's are the best balance between performance, power consumption and price.
(unless the 2389's come back at ~$19)

Best price I could find on extra ram http://www.ebay.com/itm/8GB-4x2GB-D...3157857?pt=US_Memory_RAM_&hash=item3380bc5361

Have mine running an antec earthwatts 500w (just happened to have 8-pin 12v yay!) with just the dc+ssd (no case fans), running mem test, its using ~95w on a kill-a-watt. Around 70-80w during post Better than I figured it would do.

How are everyone's drive LEDs doing? Are they lighting up with just the SATA cables from the PCI-X cards? Not sure if I should be buying any 10-pin to 10-pin cables?

Cases definitely looked brand new - I echo the similar sentiments that I couldn't find a spec of dust on any of them!

I had some light black dust on some high air flow areas. Very clean like you would find in a good datacenter. Swab the fan blades with a qtip, I'm sure you will find some dust. Perhaps some of these machines were never even used?

Does anyone know what rails fit on the case? I tried the MCP-290-00057-ON that Supermicro says work but these do not line up with the hooks

Would it be worth it to buy this and sell off old server? (Dual or Quad?)

Use my current server for media streaming/storage/video conversion (Customer Backup *run home based computer repair business)

My current home server is:
1x AMD Phenom II X6 1070T AM3
MSI 880GM-E43 (MS-7596)
12GB DDR3
4U Case (12 bays) 8TB Total
WHS2011

Should I buy and sell complete old server? (use the money i get for more drives and ram!)

All my disk LED's work.

Check the avsforums thread, I know it was discussed in detail in the later half of the thread.

Here is what mine currently looks like. Haven't had much time to work on it lately. Still have a few things to add. PSU's, Rails, cable cleanup and of course all the drives.

Current mods:
2x AMD Opteron 2425HE (6core)
2x Noctua U12DO
5x 80mm SilenX Effizio's (15dba, 32cfm)
16GB DDR2-533 (Total of 24GB)

Nice setup. Did yours start as a DC or QC? What did you have to do to get the 6 cores running?

Did you spend more on the processors or the heatsinks?!

I enjoy looking at all these mods that people do to these servers, I followed that other thread that was linked in post 7 or so and looked through that gallery. A lot of these make my 4x2TB raid 5 server look pretty weak.

Just out of curiosity, what are people using all this storage for? Directly ripping blue rays uncompressed?

Started as a QC, 2346 HE. Nothing major, as long as you have Rev 2.01a of the Motherboard, upgrade to the latest BIOS. (IIRC, 3.5)

The heatsinks were more expensive than the CPU's. You can use the generic AMD ones but I went this route so I can reuse them.

Can somebody give me a cost break down on what it would cost to buy one and convert it to be quieter?

My needs are a file server and media server (streaming to ps3).

Would I be able to run windows 7? I use TVersity as my media server and it requires Windows
If not, what OS would be able to handle media transcoding on the fly (all types)

It handles SATA drives, correct?

server (dual or quad)
which psu (I'll be running 5 drives initially, OS = 750gb, Storage = 2x 4TB and 2x1.5TB)
what fans to run
anything else?

FYI, I actually went ahead and contacted tamsolutions to see if i could purchase just the chassis and they said they had some that may have bad ports. they tested one for me came up with no bad ports and put up a private listing for me just for chassis. came out to 249 shipped,

I just messaged them asking about this. I would love a chassis only so i can transfer my other server to this case and have two matching ones. thanks for the idea!

The first chassis worked so well with the silent mods that i cant wait to get another one! these backplanes and sleds are cats ass!

Keep in mind you will need the following:
Case Breakout Cable for power switch/hdd led/net/etc. (Supermicro CBL-0068L 11.81 inch 16pin Front Panel Split Cable) http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-CBL068L
Drive screws for sleds (Supermicro MCP-410-00005-0N Screw Bag (100PCS)) http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-MCP45ON

I was wondering, if before I buy this and spend a bit modding it to make it a little quieter and less power hungry, is there something similar with less bays?

No way I would need 24x bays, Maybe 10-12x bays would do fine for me. Someone mentioned DL320s but those are pretty damn loud as well, and I would take this just to be able to quiet it down.

Nothing too special about the data. Just going to have RAID6 on 10 drives maybe. Currently I use 2x RAID5 arrays with 4TB disks using Sans Digital USB3.0 enclosures which are becoming more trouble than they're worth. Throughput isn't much of an issue, as long as it can muster 300MB/s read I'll be fine.

Open for any suggestions, thanks!
