You'd think a writer for Forbes would know that certain keywords will trigger a visit like this from the FBI. If not, she does now.

In case we needed more proof that the U.S. government is in fact reading the contents of American's online activity, this should do it. That is, unless we refuse to believe it until the FBI makes a personal visit to each of our abodes. In which case, now we know which search terms tend to attract their interest.

Nothing new to see here just, business as usual.

But, I understand that some people still don't know that nothing is private that leaves your electronic devices.

I wonder if I keep searching "secret mission" and "awesome" if I could eventually become the next American 007.

Am I the only one who thinks this writer is just making this FBI visit shit up?

I think the FBI visited her for good reason, and it wasn't just because of keywords that countless people have probably searched after the Boston incident.

just look at other article she has written, she is a political nut case.

Did they have a warrant? Last time I checked you need probable cause to even get this information. Folks why are we accepting this as something thats no big deal?

It's fine. It's fine. Everyone just stop asking questions and go about your business.

Why don't we type a bunch of random words that may get flagged by XKeyscore, PRISM, the NSA, CIA, and FBI?

Let's see which one of us gets a visit by their respective agency and hope they brought cookies because interrogation may be long, boring and, at times, torturous if they use water-boarding.

You mean they used to need a warrant to get your personal information, and browsing history...living in a free world is a pipe dream.

If police bust down your door and found drugs without getting a search warrant or probable cause the evident would be inadmissable in court because it was obtained illegally. The whole reasoning behind the fourth amendment was in response to the British "writ of assistance" abuse where they could bust your door down and search your place.

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized"

NSA spying on Americans violates the security of their persons. If you were watching TV in your home peacefully and I installed a hidden camera to watch everything you could not remove the camera, would you really feel secure in your home?

If they had a warrant before they were even allowed to monitor such activity, I would have no problem with it, but from what I have read with the current laws under Patriot Act and others they have the authority to monitor and followup like this from automated red-flag systems without ANY oversight or judicial involvement.

That's the problem, as unless this person was already authorized to be on a watch list as a suspected terrorist (unlikely), they shouldn't be monitoring her searches regardless, and certainly not harassing her because of them after ward.

I live in a free society and have no expectation of absolute security, and I am fine with that because I don't want the sacrifices that come with it. And the probability of being killed by terrorists over the past 20 years is lower than deaths by lightning strike from an article I have read, so its not exactly a leading cause of death and major threat to society.

I'd rather the money was spent on building parks for children to exercise, getting healthier food in schools, mandating uniforms for children, and fighting the obesity problems we have. That's a major killer.

Yeah, Obama is the cause.../sigh this shit has been going on since the directly after the invention of the phone... Didn't we discuss this same problem in 1986, 1994, 1999, and 2006?

I'm not buying it. Visiting all the households where "pressure cooker" and "backpack" were searched for would be a humongous waste of the FBI's time & resources. Those are pretty mundane items. There are probably hundreds of such searches every day in the U.S. Tens of thousands at least if you factor in all the other "terrorist" mundane items they would likely also be monitoring for.

There... I just did a search for both. Nothing will happen.

You need a warrant for a phone tap. You don't need a warrant to monitor internet activity, from emails to searches etc.

The Obama Administration, being in power for 8 years, is responsible for doing nothing to address this issue, and if anything increase the size and scope of government intervention in our lives.

I'm sick and tired of every administration blaming the last and apologists looking the other way, YOU'RE in power now so if YOU want to shut down Guantanamo as you said would be job # 1 for example, then at least PRETEND to make an effort.

Doing the searches alone will probably not get much attention. This woman seems like she may have gotten herself on a few other lists even before this, which may have gotten her flagged by an automated system possibly. That's assuming the visit even took place at all though.

Uh huh, is that right? You don't think your phone calls haven't been recorded? Really? So I suppose you have never heard of programs like ECHELON or Trailblazer? Or places like Menwith Hill England? Fort Meade Maryland? Wow....

You may be in your home when you search or whatever on the internet. But what you are doing is yelling in a clear and strident voice across the communication's networks and everyone and anyone can hear you. What you do across the internet is not private and if you haven't figured it out and still don't have a clue. You do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in many cases when you are online.

You want private communications, whisper in someone's ear, have a conversation in your car or your apartment, but don't expect what you say on the [H], Facebook, or via Skype to be private cause it won't be.

Haha, that's such a quaint concept. What's this "warrant," you reference? All I know is that I need my protection from scary bug eyed monsters who want to suicide bomb me and use the internet to do it!

She disparaged Obama.

Right...Fin' loony way to dismiss the most important thing for your stupid *** agenda.,

All u have to do is look at the quoted person from above to realize why The Constitutional implications be damned, it's all about Obama! Ummmm, don't have an argument? Just yell Benghazi! ...smfh. Both the Dems and Repubs have got some much manufactured division created that real issues get brushed over as if they had no implications at all.

gotta add Bush to that. Obama is just as responsible for continuing and expanding his bad policies, but Bush really got the ball rolling.

This. It's not a party issue.

In the future when we have a King or el Presidente these laws will come in surprisingly useful.
