I saw some extra spicy E5-4650 chips on eBay for $699. The seller is willing to discount down to $670 if I buy four. It appears from Google searches, these same chips might have been available for $599 in the past. I'm just wondering what folks have paid for these chips over the last few months. Thanks.

Retail for non spicy seems to be 3900 or so with ebay having them at 700's to the 1000's, so I say that's a really splendid deal. Definitely some great potential there for that price.

I've heard rumors of as low as $450, but ~$500-550 is more common. But, there's also a significant sales history on ebay now, so the metric may have moved a little.

I will say that's a really good deal. Back in June 2012 i paid $849 per piece, from Hongkong.

If you are paying more than $500 for ES chips, you are overpaying IMO.

Alright, anyone got 4 E5-4650's for $2,000? ;)

I only see one seller at the moment and he's charging $699. Is this the same seller others have used and he raised his prices (xtrememicro)? Think the law of supply and demand might be setting in?

I see he sold a single QBED ES CPU for $425 on May 21 via a bid. Someone got lucky.

I think that is a distinct possibility...

While I didn't "overpay" (per musky's definition), I'd prioritize quality merchandise over price.
I've seen cases of CPUs from China that were pretty roughed up (scratched/blemished pads, overall
laminate and IHS "wear")...

Though granted, prices aren't as competitive as they used to be...

P.S.
My 4P 2011 chips came from altechco -- no issues.

If you have to have them NOW, you are going to pay a premium. If you are patient, watch the auctions, and make offers, you can find better deals.

For example, since this thread started, a new seller has listed 14 E5-4650s on eBay for $545/each (I know nothing about this seller personally, just pointing out how things can change very quickly.)

EDIT: Those are actually E5-4650L's, but I'll bet some regular ones show up eventually at a better price.

My AMD spicy CPUs came from altechco and I've been very pleased with them. Thanks for the info.

I can also attest to altechco's ES 4650's...I picked up four of them for $475/ea back in March and they are working flawlessly. He had them on sale for $600 and we went back and forth with offers and counter offers until I got them for that aforementioned price.

I pinged altechco over the weekend and they're out of stock. Darn it!

We're talking Extra Spicy here right?

So 3Ghz instead of 3.1Ghz on all cores?

Seen a few on the bay, usually quite a lot cheaper than the regular ones.

So my guess is they may get 50-100K less PPD than the full fat 4650 spice?

Yes spicy....Never ran the plain 4650s so I cannot give you a known difference.
Have you seen them for less than $500?

Core32 I just got offers accepted from both Central Valley and sellbuy100 for 4650's @ $450-475 each just in case you were still looking :)

Who at Central Valley are you working with? Jared?

Core32: Yes that place of ill repute :) you said if I saw any below $500 to let you know.

Yes musky. I bought my first 4 4650's from him and was going to buy my second lot but got a cheaper deal from sellbuy100

Biffa, Are those four C0 stepping? And how are they working for you?

Core32, I got 4 E5-4650's from Jared @ Central Valley (not via eBay). I just popped two of them in a dual socket 2011 blade and it's working fine so far; shows stepping 6 which I believe is equivalent to C0. Installing the [H] USB image right now...

For those of you who bought 4 items, which 4P board / BIOS revision do you use / intend to use for spicy 4P folding ?

There are no observable differences between 1.0a, 1.0b and 1.0d. Cx chips should work fine with either (talking X9QRi/X9QR7).

Well, I got my first 4P 6174 @ 2.5~ GHz up and running and now I'm addicted, I managed to get the 6174s for $150 USD / Each so I think I got a pretty good deal....

How does the E5-4650s @ $540 USD compare? Should I jump on them or opt for more 617Xs at around the $250~ range? Going the Intel route all the C0s are working in SM Boards so far?

From an energy efficiency perspective, the 4650 are currently best of breed.

Expect a 4P system in the 600 watt range producing between 600k (8101) and 1000k ppd (i.e. 8104)
With 12 cents/kWh, a yearly energy bill of 630$ (53$/month) will get you around 250-300mio points for a year

Australia, 22-24 cents / KWH here. Wow, you've got it cheap!

Alright, I'll have a think about it before I pull the trigger... could just about build 2 more 6174 rigs for the same price.

Used an often quoted US price for the example.
In my part of the world it is 16 Euro cents which is approx your 24 australian cents.
Seems we are sitting in the same boat :D

Same in the UK, which is why switching to E5 is better for me.

E5-4650 @ 1mil PPD - 600W
G4-6272 @ 700K PPD - 1000W

My 4P E5 is closer to 700W and 3.0 IL (700K+) is at 800W.

The gap is still there but I don't believe it's that sensational :p

tear,
how comes that your E5 system uses 700 watt ?

I've never managed to get more than 630 watt for my system (measured with WattsUp!). This is with 4 CPU fans (CM 212 Evo), 4 system fans plus 16x 16 GB ECC RAM. I know, this is overprovisioned for FAH, but I need the memory capacity for other stuff.

WhatsUp has this handy logging functionality. The avg power consumption over 24 hrs is 615 watt (measured with 1 sec intervals)

BTW, in idle mode (when transferring data to the servers) the system uses 140 watt.

Wierd, my IL is a 6272 at 3.1Ghz maybe it just needs more volts than yours.

Definitely PSU quality plays a part, the E5 is on a Gold+ and the IL is on a Bronze+

Also its been a while since I had the meter on the IL and quite a few brain cells have probably disappeared since then :D

So using the average between Tear's and Biffa's numbers the Intel and AMD systems have about the same cost per point over 2.5 years with $0.11/kWh electricity.
i4p Xeon
Front Price: $3500
Performance: 980 kppd
Power: 650 watts ($1700)
Points/$: 172k

OC 4p
Front Price: $1600
Performance: 700 kppd
Power: 820 watts ($2150)
Points/$: 170k

Obviously these numbers are only estimates, the better choice swings one way or the other with changing electricity or hardware costs etc.

Will these OC with decent water? There are plenty on *that site* right now hovering in the $500 range, and I'd like to get my other rig back up soon.

No overclocking for E5's as far as I know, Opteron's can be overclocked - just follow the overclocking instructions.
