Microsoft Stock Takes A $32B Hit

Remind me never to ask any of you guys for Stock Market advice.

And I still don't get the windows 8 hate, like I didn't get the Vista hate or the XP hate before that.
x eleventy fucking billion.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Windows 8... I dont understand why everyone has such a negative opinion of it. It only took a day for me to be comfortable using it and now I get on my media center pc running Windows7 and I want to install Windows8.

Seems like there is a lot of ignorance with the bandwagon effect sucking everyone into believing Windows8 is this horrible monster that needs to be burned with fire. Im running the 8.1 preview and its perfectly acceptable to me and even my non-techy wife picked it up and figured out how to navigate fairly quickly.

In the words of Yahtzee "What the fuck do you think I am, a fucking dolphin? UI Interface 101, the less clicks the better!"

UI Interface 101, the less clicks the better!
Then you should love Windows 8. I can navigate to pretty much anything faster and more efficiently. Pinning items to the top metro UI interface is easy and fast. Right clicking the start button for pretty much anything useful including control panel, device manager, programs and features, network connections, etc.

Ive pretty much forced myself to learn keyboard shortcuts which should have happened a long time ago. I mostly use my pinned programs, start menu right click options, and keyboard shortcuts and I probably get to everything I use in at least 50% less clicks.

Don't forget that Windows 8 can actually run more than one mobile app at a time (up to 4 at once after upgrading to 8.1).

iOS doesn't allow that, neither do most Android tablets. Having that as a default feature is a nice bullet point (provided there are apps to use).

Umm. You can run more than 1 app at a time on both Android and iOS...

Amazing how some idiots here are using a dip in stock shares to continue justifying their incompetence at using a new interface.

Look, we get it; you're retarded and unable to comprehend how to use something different. GTFO already. If you're so content with sticking with the old stuff, by all means, why not try Windows 95 again? Idiots.

Amen bro. The people who can't figure out a tiled interface are the as those who can't figure out how to give a woman an orgasm. Congrats on the best post on the internet today.

Haha! :D

Funny shit. Maybe, just maybe....we don't want a fucking phone interface on our computer. If we did, We'd fucking install Android on it since it's actually usable.

Comparing windows 8 to the ability to give a woman orgasms....Really? You must not be doing it right. :p

You're replying to microsoft marketers, don't waste your time

BTW Microsoft marketing trolls, I can use Windows 8 just fine, what else you got in your bag of tricks other than "LULZ YOU JUZT CANTZ UZE EET!"?

Primarily the Surface RT write-down, but PC sales were down as well.

Microsoft's gamble was that the inclusion of Office on an otherwise underwhelming $500 media tablet would be so enticing that droves of would-be iPad, Nexus and Kindle buyers would instead buy a Surface RT. It was a stupid gamble made by an oblivious CEO and they're paying the price for it.

and the same person that was in charge of office when it starting using the ribbon interface is now in charge of xbox...

i stopped using msoffice when the ui switched to ribbon...still pisses me off.

Don't bother replying to him, one of the many microsoft shills on this forum by the looks of it

We have several here that pop up in every microsoft thread

I must be one of the shills then but at least I am not a clueless *****. I am glad you do not give out financial advice or you clients would probably be broke. Of course, keep letting your parents take care of you, enjoy. :D

If I were into stock, I would have to agree that now is the time to buy as well. Oh well.

It's not time to buy. I'm glad I dumped all my MS stock when it peaked right before they released their quarterly earnings.

Their stock has been hovering in the mid to upper 20's for the past decade. There are plenty of other investment opportunities that have appreciated in value more rapidly or paid healthier dividends than MSFT.

You stopped using the sabs-Ribbon version of Office you had?

People need to really differentiate the things that are purely technical and absolute, and those that are subjective to each individual. How comfortable a user is with UI is not absolute, it's subjective.

Every time I see someone defend the Windows 8 UI on PC, all they say is how great it is for them self, they keep going back to their own experience only. That's kind of meaningless as all it proves is that YOU like it, it says absolutely nothing of how others will find it.

THIS. You don't try to catch a falling knife if it is based on legitimate internal and future weakness. How can MS so over-estimate interest in Surface and Windows RT? It can be argued that it was created as say a prototype to get manufacturers going or as a hedge against Intel's x86 influence. With declining interest in their products overall and an inability to establish themselves in phone + tablets, they are in big trouble and this big drop is completely justified. A monster double digit pct drop is especially troubling for an ultra-large cap stock like MSFT You can't just chalk it up to wild volatility with a small cap.

32 billion in "shareholder value" was not wiped out. Market cap is a bad joke. When a few billion in transactions can tank tens of billions in "value," you know that value was never there, available to the shareholders in the first place.

Fyi this drop is most likely due to the leadership restructuring being laid out, if it hits low twenties ill bite.

Kind of expected. While the market is often irrational this one kind of makes sense considering:

The 900 million dollar write-down on Surface RT tablets, which was a larger number than anyone was expecting and even more important, indicating it was a huge flop.

Even excluding the Surface RT write-down, there was an earning miss.

Then there is the ongoing shrinkage in the Microsofts cash cow markets for Windows/Office. Desktop computing isn't going away but it appears to be adjusting to some new, lower level.

So you learned keyboard shortcuts for an OS that is designed primarily for keyboardless/touch computers. That doesn't seem odd to you?

A company still worth billions and still making billions pretty much overrules armchair investors that can't make six figures a year themselves. IF I was making the rules I would make speculating illegal and then watch how many useless **** that are out of work from wall street.

Then why is it based on the UIs of devices that don't have a keyboard (Zune HD, Windows Phone, XBox)?

Then how is one able to type with a keyboard or point with a mouse and use programs the same way with these input devices as they always have? I certainly have never used Word or Excel or Visual Studio on a Zune, Windows Phone or XBox.

You think we're idiots here at the [H]? Don't peddle that word krap here. Most of us "old timers" built boxes on 386 and 486 machines and have been through every iteration of windows operating systems. Give us the benefit of the doubt. We know trash and bullshyt when we see it. W8 fits nicely into that category. FWIW - What OS is on the test machine at [H]? You don't understand because you know not of what you speak?

1) The markets only seem irrational if you forget they function exactly like a poker game. People are betting and bluffing.

2) I don't think there is a shrinkage in Office, and as an obvious aside, Windows. "Share" does not mean shrinkage, mobile is an extra market. I don't see anyone writing documents on their phones, and no one is writing documents on their PCs without using an OS.

How many "armchair investors" that don't make 100k do you think work on Wall Street?

It really isn't open to interpretation, the desktop/laptop market has now shrunk for 5 quarters in a row. It is losing sales in absolute terms, not just as a percent of the total market. Eventually this will take Office revenues down. Likely the push for subscription revenues from Office is based on the fact that sales are declining.

Problem is that by declining Windows shares your going to have people move away from office. Subscription services will slow but not stop hemorrhaging.
