NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Wow... this thread has certainly attracted a number of new members. I'm wondering if the there will be enough for all of us... or will it sell out in like 10 minutes...

The strange thing about all of this is that the price difference for a fully finished interior and back panel plus the overhead of IGG is about the same as the discount newegg had on the Silverstone 450w PSU two weekends ago. I will just find sales to pay at least half of the difference, or delay buying an extra fan for a month.

It doesn't make sense to me to buy this thing without the interior and back panel painted. The price of self etching aluminum primer, paint and sand paper will cost more than having it professionally done, plus you have to do all of the work yourself. Even if you are painting it a different color, at least it would be primed and the back panel would match the exterior.

That's my one cent. Oh wait I need that. :)

Wait, wait, wait.. there was a sale? Are you talking about the 450W SFX units? Which ones, and how much? If the current prices are the non-sale prices then I'll probably hold off on the PSU purchase until the M1 is near release

Yes the exact model everyone wants :) The Silverstone st45sf-g (gold 450w SFX) was on sale for $76.99 for one day.

I guess it's been awhile since i last purchased a case. All my lian li's have been naked aluminum on rear and interior. Does the full paint help prevent corrosion?

The short answer is that the non-modular is supposedly louder under load and quieter at idle than the modular version.

The long answer is that there is a big thread all about the modular PSU and how it compares to the non-modular version and so on. And there is now a new version of the modular PSU that might be better, but I'm not sure if it's easy to distinguish which one you will get when ordering.

I'd wait for the for your case to be ordered. There could be changes and/or a new unit by the time the M1 actually gets out to the buyer. Its going to be a while yet I'm thinking. :)

This is the where we are assuming:
1) We get at least 300 orders
2) Necere finds a way to get front I/O made better & without a price increase / tooling
3) Lian Li doesn't increase price on us as result of material cost increase or factory strike ;)

$160, Silver, silver anodized panels, unpainted & raw interior, black front I/O port
$170, Black, black anodized panels, unpainted & raw interior, black front I/O port
$180, Black, black anodized panels, black painted interior, black front I/O port

US Shipping via USPS $25 (include $200 insurance)
INT Shipping via USPS $65 (include $200 insurance for most* countries)

Notes:
* Some countries don't allow insurance up to $200
** We will NOT ship without insurance, it's too risky
*** VAT & Import Duty are paid by the buyers, NCASE is exporting to you from USA
**** 100% aluminum, laser cut panels, made by Lian Li
***** Lian Li's case interiors are mostly raw aluminum & unpainted
****** IGG + Credit Card fees = 9-10% of total funding raised
******* Order 10% extra inventory to protect our customers from defects. Ex: we would stock 330 units for 300 orders.

Stretch Goals:
- Additional "No ODD" top panel as option
- 2x 120mm DemciFlex magnetic filter with every order
- Serial for those donated to IGG prototype campaign

It sounds reasonable for me. $245 for a great "open design" case.

Unfortunally there is a huge tax import on Brazil for items more expensive than $50 :/

I have no problem with any of those prices. I say we go-for-broke and select all the premium options.

Sounds good to me :) When can will the campaign open to order?

Is the international shipping going to vary a bit? Canada/Mexico should be much cheaper than other location outside of North America.

Those options look great to me. About a good a solution as I could have hoped for. Can't wait to get this started.

Can we please get a rendering or two for the silver option? I checked page 1 and wasn't seeing any.

Also, is it typical for black anodizing to cost more than silver?

Last but not least, are there any plans to offer alternative shipping methods for domestic destinations?

Paint will definitely help protect the aluminum against corrosion, but I haven't had trouble with unpainted aluminum corroding in the past. I live in a dry climate though. I like painted simply because I want a black panel on the back and a cleaner appearance inside. I would even paint the inside of the silver versions. I think it would add some class.

did you get a v2.0 revision?

No I had it in the cart and then decided to wait for the High Power 500w/120mm fan. I am glad I waited given that v2 is out now. Sounds like newegg definitely has v2 now. Probably had the sale to clear inventory or something.

I talked High Power again this morning and they said they are now ready for production, but the minimum order is 1000 units. We need an OEM to place an order I guess. I'm going to track this a little longer and wait to see how quiet v2 is on the silverstone, then make a decision.

Whats wrong with the front I/O?

Earlier rendered versions in silver can be found here - www.ncases.com/concepts/?album=4&gallery=5

Not sure if black anodized cost more than silver elsewhere.

Shipping cost is based on estimated average cost + packaging material + insurance, it's one price to prevent things from getting too complicated.

Since you are going to track it anyways, shoot me an email info AT ncases.com.

I don't think it will work that way.. I figure you pay to reserve one of the options within a certain time period (30 days? 60 days?) before the campaign is stopped. Then those orders + money are sent to Lian Li, shipping services, etc.

Necere is aiming for at least 300 units.. I think we can do even better if we promote this in the right places. I don't know to what extent of sales it would take to receive a volume discount from Lian Li, but it's worth a try.

I talked to Newegg CS about the versions they have stocked, they couldn't help me since all the units are in a warehouse and they don't keep track of which versions have been stocked/shipped. What you get is what you get :\

Whats wrong with the front I/O?
I didn't really elaborate to w360 on all of the issues with the front I/O, so his statement isn't fully informed. Basically, I gave LL the parameters for the front I/O holder/cover and let them design it. The way they did it, plus the change to the possibility of leaving the chassis unpainted means I'm going to have to redesign it.

These are the issues:

1. Painting the I/O cover while leaving the chassis unpainted will leave a strip of silver visible below the cover, which doesn't look right IMO (particularly on black exterior/unpainted interior).
2. The cover is inset and shouldn't be. Not sure why - it wasn't on the first protoype.

3. Based on the design of the holder in the first prototype, I asked them to incorporate a means of securing the USB ports as they had a tendency to shift up. These small bars you can see over the audio and USB ports were their solution:

Unfortunately, they stick up, which would cause issues with using a GPU with large/long heatsink, like the Accelero I tested:

So, I'm just going to have to redesign the thing myself. There's no concern about it incurring additional tooling costs, though.

That is really great news. I am glad to see everything $180 and below with only 300 orders. I may get a silver too. That way I can get a silver/painted and black/unpainted for the price of two black/unpainted.

What was the problem with the IO panel? I don't recall any details about this. (EDIT: I now see above.)

Aluminum doesn't "rust". There is a slight oxidation that happens almost immediately after aluminum is exposed to air, but it is the same color as aluminum, and it protects the aluminum.

did you mix those up? the silver does not come in a painted variant...

Just for fun...

You are correct. Aluminum doesn't generally need to be painted to protect it from 'rusting' like iron or steel. However 'rust' is iron oxide and is produced by oxidation, just as 'alumina' is aluminum oxide and is produced by the same process.

In fact with the exception of the noble metals: ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, silver, osmium, iridium, platinum, and gold, all metals oxidize (corrode). This includes several precious metals such as aluminum (yes aluminum is a precious metal), chromium, nickel, zinc, copper, silver, etc. The difference is that unlike iron oxide, the oxides formed by these metals are a more uniform and tenacious oxide layer that protects the underlying material by “sealing” the surface from further oxidation once formed (as you said).

Even more interesting though is that anodized aluminum is aluminum that has been intentionally oxidized using electricity in order to build up a thicker than normal layer of aluminum oxide. This increases the hardness (and thickness) of the aluminum surface and allows the alumina to act as a primer for dies. Laser etching just bleaches the oxide layer white, so it works great with black anodized aluminum or other dark colors. So by paying more for anodized aluminum panels, we get intentionally corroded/rusted panels

Aluminum therefore does corrode and can be protected by paint. Just try putting some aluminum in water for a while, or heat it up and put it in water for just a few minutes. Better yet try mixing aluminum with ammonia and water, or just some urine.

Unless you plan to run your computer submerged in a urinal however, for all practical purposes you won't have trouble with your M1 rusting away if you don't paint it. The same would be true with a galvanized steel chassis (steel coated with zinc). Galvanized steel is often painted in order to protect the zinc from oxidation, in order to reduce the amount of zinc required to protect the steel from oxidation.

No, I would just buy two and trade the panels. Black/painted and silver/unpainted would become silver/painted and black/unpainted. I think this shows that the prices are a little bit arbitrary since it costs $10 less for a silver/painted and black/unpainted model as opposed to black/unpainted and black/painted models. I would think the 'rare' silver/painted model would be the most expensive. It might look the best though, and when I get tired of that I can go back to black/painted :)

For those wondering how the Silverstone Tundra TD02 would not fit in this case, simply look at the picture below. The red line outlines the area occupied by the 70mm thickness of the TD02 (using single set of 120mm fans). There will be little room for the tubing. I guess the Swiftech H220 is the one to go with unless something new pops out.

dCOJhQR.jpg

On the other hand, that's not really obstructing the tubing, since the H220 in the example you have has the tubing bent below it. I'm just going to wait after the case is released to see people's experiences with various CLC-solutions and just have to make due with the boxed cooler.

Necere and Wahaha360: thx for all the info, this is looking very promising. I'm still hoping for a European-based distribution though, if it would actually solve any problems.

will there be a shipping discount if you order more than one case? In that case (pun intended), maybe we might order together...
Sooo, who lives in the Netherlands an is planning to order one? (Preferably close to Rotterdam :p)

Phuncz, you are from Belgium, am I correct?

PS. googled '245 dollar in euro', result: 187.39 euro which is well below the psychological 200 :D

Your plans sound good to me! I like the stretch goals too. If the "no ODD" top panel is in addition to the regular slotted top panel, that would be a quite nice option as long as it's not very expensive. Without the ODD slot, my computer wouldn't have to be "pretending" to have an ODD when it actually doesn't. If I ever repurpose it into a HTPC I could simply swap the top panel and add in an ODD.

The problem is, we need to account for >25% extra tax and import duty. So I'll be happy if it's 250€ with shipping and customs.

Since I've paid 130€ for the crap PC-V352B I have now (Lian-Li doesn't really test-build their cases apparently), I'd love a case that's 1/3rd the volume but has so much more flexibility.

I asked this two times but got no reply: I still want to know the exact weight of this chassis. I'm sure 6lbs is just an estimate.

This sounds much better. Including import tax and duty this will still end up to be about 220€ (in Europe - or two FT-03 Mini / four Node 304) but I think that's alright considering the awesomenes of this case ;)

It is 3KG / 6.7lbs with Lian Li packaging.

We might have to double box it - most likely for international shipping.

If we double box it and stuff it with peanuts, it will be < 8lb.

We plan to do some drop tests (4 - 6 feet), depending on how it goes, we will adjust packaging.

Im intending to get a few of these for a small set of machines that I need to build up. USPS has had really long shipping delays for me. Is there any way that I can get it t be shipped by courier, I am willing to pay the extra. (Yes USPS is that bad in comparison to the courier)
