digging the mathmos

OK, I'm interested in the aluminum bars you have there. Please share.

It was a custom stand I built because I wanted my monitors to appear like they were floating. The aluminum bars are from a company called 80/20 Inc, the stuff is great but expensive! It's like legos for adults.

Do love

Definitely interested by the monitors stand model and brand. I have the same setup 3x27' and cannot find a really nice stand

It's custom built, made it out of extruded aluminum from 80/20.

I have more pictures of the build if you guys are interested in seeing it, I could make a post about it as well, let me know where I can post it!

in the market for a Galant myself - been doing my research (just closed on a home yesterday) already been planning dimensions/positioning and such with my nice little 3d home builder program :-p

What I'm noticing is that if you buy the parts separately to build a galant it costs WAY WAY more. For example - I'm wanting a right hand black galant - just like Dyno's picture (minus the rounded edges)

Without the rounded edge extensions it's like 340 dollars, the same combination in left hand is $275 dollars, basically to get the right hand version of the desk I want, I have to cough up 60ish dollars more?

I'm not actually going to buy for probably a month or so... as nice as Ikea's stuff is, they kind of suck when it comes to conveying the dimensions of each piece accurately. (pictures don't help when you have each end of the table different sizes. Past all that they look like great desks, looking forward to having way more real estate.

to respond to the last page talking about ikea shipping prices. I actually found their shipping price to be pretty reasonable -- $149 flat fee for a galant series + queen size bed. I also tested their shipping quote by adding a big ass couch and it didn't change at all.

The closest ikea is about 30 miles away from me (Dallas) however I don't have a truck or van (just a silly little 4 door kia)

When you factor in Gas/time/traffic/energy to move a ton of heavy crap, and any rental fees to get a truck, $149 seems halfway reasonable considering the only thing you really have to do is open your front door and let them drop it off.

I'm usually the cheapest guy around too and if there is a way to DIY, I'm all for it, but there are times when you have to realize what it's costing you in time/effort/gas/rentals to get the job done yourself vs. having it delivered. Hell fighting 2 hours worth of Dallas traffic is probably worth $50 there by itself lol

shipping from ikea must vary by region...

oh wow - yeah that has to suck. $350 for shipping would kill any notion I have of owning ikea stuff if it cost that much to ship it.

I suppose my proximity (30 miles) to the Dallas Ikea has something to do with it.

I just went to the Ikea website and put the Fredde desk in my cart. I live 20 miles from two Ikea stores in Philadelphia and Conshohocken. Shipping was $129. I think Ikea just really wants you to come into the store.

Man, I love Ikea. Ended up replacing the 2nd PC POS desk with a Ikea Fredrik that was in the "As-Is" section for $75. There is nothing wrong with this desk.
Sadly they only had one and my Jerker needs replacing, but part of that is I can't stand the thought of tossing it.

whats wrong with the jerker?

The wood screws finally gave out. I've have this desk since 2003 (Maybe longer) and I had to resort to drilling and placing bolts to attach it to the metal frame around the best. It really doesn't detract from the desk but now I have six bolts around the perimeter of the desk except for the front.

Great Setup! I see you have the first version Jerker, On Friday I picked up the same version you have but with dark grey metal with all the accessories in great condition for free! :D
I still use my Jekers to this day! & some I have in storage :D funny shit I did a similar setup usin' one of them as a wall unit for my old PC & stuff.

Now I'm here usin' one setup for now, until I get my EVENTs! :D

Just a heads up to Galant owners... I thought we had to buy the frame in order to replace the table top, but if you go into the store, you can buy just the table tops for each section. Maybe most know that, but I just found out. Thought I'd share. : )

:eek:You just found that out!?...Jk:D...That's the good thing about IKEA you can custom built your furniture.:D

To answer your question, it appears the mount was designed to sit flush with the desk in portrait mode with a 30" monitor, it sits almost exactly 1" off the desk with my setup because I elevated the mount, hope this helps.

Anyone knows what keyboard is that? im looking for a small keyboards with high keys like those? thanks

@xpclassified:

Could be one of many keyboards including, but not limited to:
CMStorm Quickfire
Leopold FC200R
Filco Majestouch-2

Just Google "tenkeyless mechanical keyboard". You'll find what you're looking for.

I have the exact kb that i am not using it is a CM Quickfire with blue switches i just got the Corsair k70 waaaay sexier and then reds are better feel to me.

I agree that reds are best, but i tried out the corsair boards and did not like them. they have a quickfire with reds(i am using one now) and they are great.

Just a heads up - Ikea has discontinued the Numerar, so you're limited to whatever they might have in the store. It has been replaced by the lighter, single-sided, equally priced Akerby.

Jerker (circa 2005)
Jerker.JPG

Thinking of shelving my monitors and freeing up some desktop space.

This is why every time I want something from ikea I have to go to their store to buy it. They always charge s/h twice the cost of whatever I buy.

Doesn't ikea realize that if the cost of their s/h was lower more people would buy online?

The whole point of Ikea is to simplify distribution to keep costs down. They can make shipping cheaper for large items, or even free, but then they would need to add cost to each item sold to offset what they spend in shipping. But their business model is built around self-service, so they would be diluting that model.

Bear in mind that most retailers with cheap or free shipping, such as Amazon, offset shipping costs via volume and the understanding that the vast majority of merchandise is cheap to ship, anyway, such that the majority offsets the cost of the expensive minority. With a furniture company, that balance shifts drastically.

Anyone had a Galant A-leg fail? One of mine will not tighten anymore after adjusting the height (I hadn't even rotated to tighten it yet!). Luckily it wasn't a crucial support. I can rotate the leg clockwise, then hear & feel a click, like a groove not catching and then its loose again. Besides replacing the thing, any fixes?

Picking this up from a guy on Craigslist this weekend for 40 bucks! Couldn't believe I found the deal.

lucky! I'll be buying a big new one in a couple weeks for ~$400 :(
I'm so dumb for leaving my Jerker at my old place.

So whats the deal with all the recent ragging on the Galant stability/build quality?

I am going to be buying mine in a few months but I can't justify a $650 delivered desk that may or may not wobble... (yes, to be fair that price includes a rolling drawer)

1) are the T-legs stable or not? I am going to be using them on carpet in an old cheapo house so I don't know if the floor is 101% level, Can I just shim up one or two legs and level it that way or is it an unfixable crap shoot?

2) Does the finish on the brown-black really run/streak?

3) how is the overall quality of these desks? Usage = 3x 24" monitors, 1x PC (I7 950, CM212, 560TI twinfrozr, fractal R3~), keyboard, mouse + me leaning on it to type.

4) Does the Summera holder fit a Fractal R3? (20" 1/2 L x 8" 1/4 W x 17" 2/5 H -- more need room for top mounted exhaust fans though so round it to 20-23 H" I am guessing)

5) I'm going to be buying THIS 63"x78" desk (except in black-brown, which stupidly isn't listed)
http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S49807553/#/S69807552

Now, I have never built one of these and I have to build it piece meal to get the color I want so... does this look right?

my shopping cart:
GqCz2cX.png

Itemized list:

1x GALANT Table top with frame, black-brown (398.477.76) $129.00
TWO packages: 600.568.81 & 801.052.44

1x GALANT Extension top with frame, black-brown (698.374.79) $70.00
TWO packages: 100.568.88 & 901.052.67

3x Galant T-Leg, Silver (200.569.15) $40/each
THREE T-Legs: 200.569.15

6) is it possible to build just the frame first and leaving the table tops off? I don't have a ton of leeway with wiggle room (it is an odd shaped room due to me literally having my office in my closet). I was hoping it is possible to build the frame standing up and not have to flip the entire desk in one piece.

E.g. Build frame in the spot its supposed to be, lay table tops on it, screw them down, done... or does the table actually have to be built and flipped as one piece.

the space I am working with for reference

Also, does anyone own something similar to mine with triple monitors on ARMS (not desk stands)? If so can you post a picture so I can get a general Idea?
