Not hot but FF7 on steam!

I am with you its god damn FFVII on Steam, and I had to buy it.

please don't buy it ><

what is the point of buying a rerelease of a game that is 15 years old? The only added "benefit" is always on DRM or cloud based cheats?

I'd be in for one. Such a great game that I never finished. And my PSX is long gone.

Wow. The music is fucking.... terrible.

And a built-in cheat to max your girl, hp, and mp at will.

I think I'll hold on to my fond memories and pass on this.

I saw it when I was on there looking for a game to buy.

I still have FFVII for the PC which is the only game I ever pre-ordered.

Just for the ability to not have to fool around with getting the original to work on new hardware is worth it.

And you don't have to use the cheats.

I also saw some stuff in the screen shots for the re-release that are not in the original.

That being said, I might buy it when/if it goes on sale.

You can get it for $10.80 on Green Man Gaming with the code GMG10-VTTCS-VYH18

Also, the mods for the original PC release work with this version with a tiny bit of extra work. It's a good price, especially considering how much the PSX and retail version go for.

It's $10 on Playstation Network.
Buy it there play on PS4, PS3, PSP, and PSVita?

It's worth the couple extra dollars to play it on PC so you can mod it with high res texture packs. The original version is horribly dated and looks horrible, especially compared to the HD mods for PC.

FF7 is my favorite Final Fantasy.....But it aged the worst out of the entire series.

I'd say awesome buy for anyone who still hasn't played this game and also doesn't mind early 3d graphics....one of the worst graphical periods in gaming.

That's the one neat things I notice with console gaming (more so with older ones) is that you can see a huge range of difference in graphics on the same exact hardware, makes you think if it's a matter of lazy coding, or did they learn more efficient ways of cramming the same crap into tinier spaces.

Look at FF7 vs FF9, just how much the graphics changed. Personally I liked FF9 on the PSx the best simply because it went back to the 4 person team (old excuse was memory issues... crappier graphics and there were memory issues on the same hardware?) plus it was and old throw back to actual swords and sorcery type of RPG, not like FF10 where there's a guy with a ball, and some singer who casts magic or whatever..

That said, pure money grab on this edition, nothing really changed except it works on Win7 out of the box. Still wish they did a PC version of FF9, oh well that's what emulators are for.

Well they started FF7 before PS1 was even released. So they had very limited time to work with the hardware....a couple youtube video's cover the making of and history pretty well.

FF9 was cool but the storyline was too bland it was pretty much DBZ re-visioned a monkey boy from a different planet saves the world against his evil brother his home planet blows up and his brother turns super sayian....also don't like little kids as main characters

Believe it or not, FF7 was actually originally written for the N64, but was moved to the PSX because Nintendo wanted cartridges and not CDs.

That plus Nintendo treated 3rd parties like shit, made the 64 hard to program for, had expensive licensing and royalty fees, had insane requirements, wanted to force Square to make sweeping changes to the game.

Still have my Non-GH copy in the closet, along with pretty much every other FF pre-ps3.

I still remember that magazine ad that showed how many cartridges it would take to hold the game. And then thinking, damn, Squaresoft paid for a 2-page ad to totally diss Nintendo hahah.

In the last 2 or so years, threw away a magazine that still had a preview for the N64 version of FFVII, along with GoldenEye and some other games early N64 titles most of which didn't come out until the console was almost dead (F-Zero) :D

You guys know there was a direct port of FF7 on PC when it came out right? Original music and all.

The port you are talking about was released in 1998 with MIDI music. This is a mildly altered rerelease of that port.

The FF series and never ending re-releases have been an ongoing money grab for years. Square appears hell bent on trying to reinvent the series (FFXIII, XIII-2, XIII-3) instead of giving people a remake of VII or an new old school FF game. Also some of the newer iOS FF games are freak terrible ports.

Having said that, I think XIII-2 was great :D I am just done buying the re-releases for Nintendo DS, iOS, PC...

The entire point of the FF sequels has always been to reinvent the series. No two main FF games are exactly alike. They all have major gameplay differences. The advent of the ATB gauge kept a few games similar, but there were still drastic differences in how the battles worked, the magic systems, the world design, etc.

Why are people still excited about this game? It's nearly 20 years old...if you haven't played it by now then just give up. Also FF7 has been on PC for a long time now and works perfectly as it is.

I don't have a PS1 copy anymore and they are pricy. Nor do I have a PS3 to play the emulated version on. Retail PC copies are also expensive. For the $10 I paid it's worth it. It's a fun game to replay.

Some people enjoy going back to play some of their favorite games that they haven't played in over a decade. 16 years old doesn't necessarily make it not fun anymore - just old.

And I imagine many of them no longer have their discs or never had it for PC to begin with, and getting it used is pretty costly. I still have my original PS1 CDs but take 1997 graphics and throw them up on a big HDTV - if I ever wanted to replay it I'd definitely want the PC version (and whatever graphic mods you can throw at it).

works perfectly is a tad bit of a stretch

1. Many folks think it is the best final fantasy of the series
2. Prior PC version was supposedly buggy
3. Runs on current versions of windows.

I haven't played ff7 yet but think it is still worth trying after all this time. Classic games never become outdated even when the graphics technology has moved forward.

For the price it would be easier to just buy it again on Steam and not deal with the BS to get it to work and the numerous bugs.

Wow, it looks just like the port that came out last century (1998) lol!

Why are some people so offended by this game?

Because Square Enix decided to spend a lot time on adding DRM, SE shop based cloud save and horrible achievements to a 16 years old game, and SE did not spend any time updating textures or anything else the fans could have enjoyed.
An HD version would be great.
The Steam version is said to feature SE DRM on top of any restrictions Steam has, requiring a SE account to play the game.

EGIT:
Apparently SE has toned down the DRM and only require an Internet connection for players using the SE cloud save feature.

SE was pretty clear from the get go that it was going to be the 1998 edition updated to support modern OSes with a few extra touches. The graphics do look significantly better than the original release. Anyone that was expecting this to be a remake or HD update was fooling themselves. They would never do a remake for the PC and you can't really "HD" PS1 3D models without making them look even worse

On top of that it seems possible that SE doesn't even have the source for PC port as one of the people that did a lot of mod work for the game said that SE had to hack in the Cloud saves and achievements. The mod community has been working on this game since 98 and they haven't even been able to update the textures.

Theres no always on DRM. Do your homework instead of reading the first post on google and regurgitating false info.

High res support, works like it should out of the box (Try installing the original PC version it wont work without jumping through hoops), Cloud saves, cloud based cheats (some may want this) .

To me the cloud based saves and higher res support alone justifies the cost and the one time activation (There is no always on DRM).

They didnt tone it down thats how it always was. Like always people read the first post they find on google then take bad info and spread it without any thought.
