Apple is being sued again for patent infringement. This time around it is Boston University claiming that Apple has done "substantial and irreparable damage" to the school.

Boston University is taking on the richest consumer electronics company on the planet, claiming Apple ripped off a computer engineering professor’s patented electronic semiconductor and stuffed it into the world’s most popular devices.

strange how these lawsuits come into light after the fact that Apple, Amazon, and Samsung all make a huge profit off the tablet industry. Maybe a coincidence, or not.

Nitrate semiconductors for LED's.

Big question is "prior art". Whether somebody had patented or produced these kinds of semiconductors.

Looks like he's going to lose this one.

money grab by a university, this is almost unheard of *sarcasm

Anyone can sue anyone else for anything...;) The trick is winning, and then actually acquiring a judgment, and then a non-rubber check, of course, because otherwise losing and even *winning* can bankrupt a plaintiff (if he's hoping for blood from a turnip.) Still, the bar for nuisance suits is far too low and people not using patents but suing the people who they claim do use them are a blight on the tech landscape. Behind all of it at least one lawyer lurks, determined to cash in for himself on someone else's payday.

Patent troll is patent troll. It doesn't matter what form they take... in this case an university.

so Jessica Van Sack didnt even attempt to explain what the patent in question covered, or what the entire deal is all about... great coverage.

who ever said blogging was a less thorough and accurate form of reporting?

I'm wondering if some of these people lawyer up early, but are told to wait for a bit as it's starting to get successful. Then, after more people use the technology and it's in the hands of everyone, then sue for a lot more. Seems to be the tactic of the patent trolls. Don't sue and settle for $50K on a tech that might make it big. Wait for it to get big then sue for $5M+.

I'd like to learn about this patent...since according to the article it indicates that it is related to a semiconductor device...Apple doesn't make semiconductors, they only buy them from other companies. In this case I would think the semiconductor company that made the device is liable.

Yeah, what is the point of the story AT ALL without including the information about what the fk we are even talking about?

Patent # WHAT? Semi-conductor WHAT?

Nothing like Total Information Unawareness.

A type of LED that is not based on silicon, based on gallium nitride?
Used in screen displays.
