Steam Summer Sale.

amazon handily beat steam in their spring/winter sale..

the steam sales just aren't as exciting, especially after the amd's ns bundle - already got some of the latest AAA titles for cheap :)

When did they start doing that?

They didn't. Some installers used to include Foxit to read the manuals. I haven't seen them do that for a while, though. It's hard to consider Foxit "bloatware", being so light and not at all malicious. Otherwise... uhhh, DosBox? You don't even have to use the GOG downloader at all.

Wait, Green Man Gaming is gone!!! WTH happened?

They're not gone, but ...

This is an important announcement for our X:ish users regarding pricing on the Green Man Gaming website. We are always reviewing our policies here and have decided to make a change that will help us deliver the value you expect from GMG.

All X:ish users will notice that prices on the Green Man Gaming website are now shown as GBP (£) instead of USD ($).

Of course, this is a change and change doesn't suit everyone, but we hope that this will enable us to stay competitive and continue to serve your market diligently.

Thanks for your continued support

The GMG Team

And by "a change that will help us deliver the value you expect from GMG" they mean 'make games so expensive it's not worth it'.

I knew it was coming, just disappointing when the time finally arrives.

The issue is stakeholders further down the supply chain will pressure the distributor to enforce pricing via GeoIP.

Inform away!

I search the internet for cheaper games and will sometimes find them. I'm not into used PC games, and hesitant going to unknown sites. I have gone to Green Man gaming a couple times, and that appears to work.

The most convenient way is really to use a resource that aggregates PC digital game deals. For example I use this blog - http://digitalgamedeals.com/ and I'm also in the "Hookups" group on Steam. There are other options of course but that is two I'm using at the moment. Another possible resource would be CAG forums (cheapassgamers forums) but that is more games in general so there is more information to shift through. Same thing with the "hot deals" section here and general deal sites like slickdeals they are simply less specific. Of course only relying on these has the disadvantage of possibly being slightly late to deals and missing what isn't posted but you generally should be pretty inform using one of these types of resources without too much effort.

As for the specific sources there are multiple digital distributors, I'll approach this more from a US/Canada angle since this is what I am most familiar with and likely most suited for the majority here. One thing first to be aware of is a significant amount of games are now tied into a service such as Steam (steamworks) as such no matter the source of your purchase (even physical retail) you need to go through that service to access the game. This means the actual place of purchase is irrelevant (for example the issue of everyone wanting their games through Steam). The same goes with EA and Origin as another example.

Generally for preorders and new releases I would look to GMG and Amazon PCDD. GMG tends to have blanket 20% or higher discounts (as opposed to the standard 10% for preorders). You should also escape tax completely as it is not based in the Canada/US. Amazon PCDD also tends to bundle a lot of bonuses with preorders (sometimes in terms of credits) as another option as well. Gamefly is another possible choice as they also occasionally run the blanket large coupon discounts. And lastly Gamersgate and Impulse have a "points" system, not the most lucrative but all else being equal and if the above isn't available you could try those and they will add up eventually.

In general in terms of official distributors you have the following (off the top of my head) -

Steam, GMG, Gamersgate, Impulse, Gamefly, Amazon PCDD and Origin. They typically carry major releases.

Then you have more specialty type vendors such as GOG, Desura, etc.

You also have other non official sources. Right now game bundles with video cards are in the vogue (especially from AMD). This means there are usually quite a few people looking to unload these keys from those video card purchases. Check various forums (like here) or ebay for these. Metro for instance was part of Nvidia's last bundle. Another thing to note is bundled games tend to drop price rather fast post release as well.

Another source would be gray market keys from other regions (typically Eastern Europe and Russia since the pricing is lower).

When's this going to happen? I'm on GMG right now and still see $

It changed for his specific region (country) but he edited out what that was so I will respect that and not mention what it is. It was not the US however (I assume that is where you are from?).

Yes, I'm USA.

I understand. :)

does is suck when the steam sales come around and you ALREADY OWN EVERY GODDAMN THING ON SALE?

yes it does

Believe me, it sucks even more when there are countless of games on sale but you're not interested in any of them.

what happened to the Summer Sale that was rumored to start a few days ago?...guess people jumped the gun a bit early based off the trading card beta ending

Yeah, as of 7/3 the Steam Summer Sale is MIA. Wow, i was hoping to have some games to play over the 4th holiday week.

Still keepin dream alive.

I'm with you, I'm hoping for the Steam sale now more than ever since I actually have a decent amount of free time this holiday weekend.

I've got my cash ready, bring it on!!!

The Steam summer sale has historically been the week of the Fourth of July.

Wha? There have been more Steam Summer sales in June.

Most dates are a Thursday. Last Steam Summer sale was July 12. It is probably coming this month.

Dont count it out yet, remember, the sales dont usually start until 1:00PM EST! So today (7/3) may still be the day

Fuck. If I see anymore shit about hats I'm gonna kill the next person I meet. Really. With a rusty knife.

Don't they normally end their midweek madness sale by 12pm when the sale starts? Last few years I seem to remember them doing this.

I dont think i have ever remebered a sale not starting on a Thursday so its possible that It would start tomorrow maybe.

I hope it starts tomorrow, otherwise I'm going to have to buy mortal kombat to keep me busy.

Killing Floor summer sideshow just started (July 2th to the 23th) so the summer seal should start any day now

really??? Do you mean the 2ND to the 23RD ?

yes -_-

Just got Fable TLC and Bully: Scholarship Edt, for about $4 each. I love that Steam are bringing these classics to sale!

I'm hoping to picking up the farcry series, bioshock: infinite, maybe skyrim, and possibly a few indie titles on the cheap that we haven't already been treated to with the humble bundle/humble weekly. Honestly, though, if the sale list looks anything like the leaked amazon list, I might just sit this one out, and pick up what i can through a bundled graphics card sale. still looking forward to tomorrow, though.. but not so much how badly my wallet gets broke off in the first few days.
