Hi all,

The only games I play on the PC these days are SWTOR and other MMOs. Are the 29" Ultrawide displays good for these types of games ? Anyone out there with experience with these screens have any input ? I can get a good deal on the LG model..I use a 27" 1080p 120hz Samsung at the moment.. is the 29" a decent idea ?

29" below a 27"

There are 2 versions of the 29" LG, one with 30ms of input lag vs. your Samsung's 13ms @120hz and one with almost none, but there is not way to know which one you are getting.

The Dell version also has high input lag.

There are 2 versions of the AOC as well

Low Lag

High Lag

If you have 700$ to blow get a ViewSonic VP2770, coming from a 120hz 750/950D the ViewSonic's pixel response times should't disappoint you.

Also, the 21:9 monitors coatings are grainier vs. the 27" 2560x1440 PLS panels

I have been interested in these 29" monitors too. I'm a sucker for contrast though, I stick to VA. Here's another review showing that the AOC has very low input lag - http://pcmonitors.info/reviews/aoc-q2963pm. They mentioned that they had to test input lag in a different way because of the resolution. Maybe overclockers weren't testing properly. It's also got a big section all about how games look and other things look in 16:9.

i have the dell u2913wm and don't have a single complaint.

bought it specifically for games and movies.

from mmos, i tested gw2 and wow so far (both work flawlessly.) i even clocked the DELL to 75Hz out of the box just by creating a custom res in nvidia control panel with default timings.

wouldn't recommend it for a single monitor solution though. it's way to small in height. for surfing and other stuff, i have a secondary U2412 ;)

bump.

Anyone else care to comment on how the 29" Ultra wide panels are when coming from a 27" 1080p?

I agree with the above comments. I have the vp2770 as my surfing monitor and main one for work while the lg29ea93 is for gaming/movies plus when I need another monitor for work. I came from a 30 inch Dell monitor and was going to pick up the 3014 until I saw all the problems it had. I can't complain about the lg as I got a perfect one that's pretty uniform and has the new FW that makes it probably the best lag free ips monitor. I've played Metro Last Light, Crysis 3 and Diablo 3 on both monitors and tend to like the lg one a little bit better for gaming and HD movies look awesome on it. However, I don't really like surfing on the LG one as it's a little weird to have things cut off coming from a 30 inch monitor.

I can understand that going from a 30" 16:10 to a 29" 21:9 would be a bit odd for surfing, but what about going from a 27" 16:9 like I have now ? Surely the vertical would roughly equate to the vertical height of around a 23" to 24" 16:9 ??

the only way these screens make sense to me is to get 3 and stack them vertically.

I just got the AOC monitor ($370 sale on Newegg) and I love it. With RPGs like Diablo III, you see so much to the sides that you can plan your battles before the enemies even notice you. With FPS like Borderlands 2 or Battlefield 3 your peripheral vision is used and everything is that much more immersive. I switched from a 23" 1080p and side by side they are the same physical and rendered vertical height. I've just gained several inches horizontally.

I'll be up front and say I don't have a 27" monitor. I have used my friend's 1440p one (Korean no name brand overdrive to 75Hz) and it is quite impressive. This monitor is very noticeably vertically shorter than that. However it is also noticeably wider than that, even though they have the same 2560 horizontal resolution. So I'd say the 27" is much more versatile for general purpose usage like video editing and web browsing.

But ifthe main thing you are interested in are gaming FPS and MMOs, you'll be happy with this monitor.

Picked up the LG today.
Contrary to some comments I've read, it's really not too bad for general desktop use either. I don't really miss the vertical height much at all..

I bought one when they first launched and lived it but after 2 months it wouldn't power on, well I bought another one from Best Buy ( $599 right now and I had $150 worth of best buy gift cards ) and it was manufactured in May 2013 with newest revision and wow what a difference. If this was 1200p instead of 1080p I might consider this the best moniter ever!! But really the 1080p is no biggie I love it.

Try running it at 75hz, it should do it easily and will be another jump again..

THANKS!! Im at 78HZ!!! 80Hz crashes so im staying put at 78Hz, will this damage the moniter at all? I have a 3 year warrenty on it so i guess it cant hurt right...

It won't hurt it at all. If the monitor falls out of it's sync range it just shuts down with an error message "out of range" or similar. Plus, there is the warranty :)

I have been eyeing this monitor along with some others, my main question is, what version is the HDMI?

I currently run my gpu --> receiver ---> screen with hdmi to get audio&video in one. (dvi to screen + hdmi only audio would have a 2 screen effect, and cause the gpu to be in constant 3d clocks).

is it rev 1.4 or 1.4a that can do its native resolution at 60 or more (oc'd) hz? I can't find anything on LG's website, all it says is HDMI.

Thanks!

I'm going to get one of these and put a 23'' 1920x1080 iin vertical next to it, almost identical PPIs

I'll go see if I can find any info out regarding the HDMI

Received the new model LG yesterday to replace a faulty 29EA93. The new model is called the 29EA73 and the main difference is a black stand instead of the silver. Zero input lag on the new model, it's chalk and cheese.

I was able to check gameplay by myself on 29" monitor on a gameshow.
And for me I can not recommend it. I was still missing some space on the upper part of the screen.
Not good new trend in the monitor manufacturing.

You get used to the loss of vertical screen real estate very quickly but ultimately it depends on what you use you computer for that determines whether the aspect ratio suits you.
