All the technology is from Battlefield 4, but this is the engine powering the next Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mirror's Edge 2, and most likely Battlefront 3, among others. Some of this should be absolutely incredible in an RPG.

It actually looks very impressive. Let's hope the netcode gets an overhaul along with the engine.

ME sequel is based on the ethos, not the trilogy i.e ME is 3 parts all with sheppard so yes it is done, but the IP is not.

As for bigger fancier features, mehh, I have a hell of a time with BC2 and BF3 cause of the various "artistic" flavors, lighting in many cases just simply does not look right, things like fog, lens flare and such are just WAY overblown, dynamic lighting is just terrible etc. While the gameplay was/is fun, they spend far to much time on Hollywood effects instead of making a great game where things just "feel right" and not fake. Im sorry but a solider wearing eye protection is not going to have water drops on said eye protection everywhere he looks, the sun does not do the lens flare effect constantly, and lighting will not blind you by steeping into and out of a dark room instantly.

So yeh might be bigger and badder, but its the same old with a new skin IMHO, always things promised but rarely delivered on.

It's amazing what this engine is capable of, real life-like graphics, and then just before the release of BF4 they are going to slap some ugly filters and color grading on top of it to fuck it all up...

I can see improvements over v2. Nothing huge. I still think they need to work on providing more high res textures and better aliasing.

I think The Witcher 3 and their Red3 engine is the top tier of engines now, especially since they have expanded it for open world. And they are great at giving even more high quality options for PC users. Cryengine 3 as well of course.

Those are design decisions, they're not a direct result of using the Frostbite engine. I highly doubt they are going to re-use the blue filter again after all the bitching from BF3.

Your not the first to make these complaints, and I agree where the sun is concerned. From what I've played of the Alpha and seen in the E3 streams, it seems as if they are finally nerfing the sun to more believable levels... at least in multiplayer. The SP trailers still look a bit over-blown, but that is some what expected. Perhaps not as bad as BF3, but still more than I like. Great to look at, a pain to play in.

Perhaps my most anticipated game on the horizon (unless HL3 finally gets announced). :p

The first time I played Red Faction I said to myself that destruction is definitely a must in FPS games for not only different tactical advantages, but also immersion and believably. That was 12 years ago. Since then, the only other game that comes to mind that had pretty good destruction was Bad Company 2. Why this isn't a standard now is beyond me. We have the horsepower and technology at our disposal... let's just hope the destruction is dynamic and not just scripted.

Red Faction: Guerrilla had impressive destruction. Crysis had destruction as well, though the individual parts of buildings broke off in clean pieces like lego. Though with the physics they pieces had it was rather impressive for its time.

We have the horsepower and tech at our disposal on PC, but not until Next Gen consoles will it be where the mass market is. That is why we haven't seen more of it thus far.

With more games being built on the Frostbite 3 engine, I'm sure we'll see even more. I'm eager to see what driving games, RPG's, etc do with it, but I'm sure it will take a couple years for Developers to get comfortable and really start pushing it. Then, after they've gone too far with a new toy, we'll see them polish it and use it believably and effectively.

I want to shave that guys chin ...

It's an artistic design choice! Deal with it! :p :p :D

I'm really excited for the naval combat, those waves look so fun to ride on a jetski.

One of the cutscenese at the end with the asian woman almost looks real for a second.

I too am excited about the naval combat!

I think all the complaining about the lens flare and stuff is funny.
Have you ever been in that situation? Dense dust, sun through goggle or mask?
Looking at the video it looks REAL. I think it'll be awesome and I'm glad they are pushing the limits.
If I want boring FPS I'll go play TF2, Left 4 Dead, CoD, etc.
The Battlefield series makes me happy to play for the intensity and realism. The money I spend on hardware and the time I spend OCing it becoming worth it.

there's next ME? isn't that sequel done?
Yup... Disney (the new owner of Bioware) has decided to create a new arc in the universe. The new game will be released alongside the ME movie in 2015.

OMG.... I would actually see that. Disney princess in a scifi setting? HELL YEA!

The game is the game now. No other visual features will be added.
not a patch over Arma 3's naval combat.

can go underwater in arma 3!
You can swim underwater in BF4 now also. And on the surface the waves will alter your position.

this is pretty cool,
i've alwasy imagined that a game enginge that is based on reality would always end up being asuperior engine. looks like i was right!

imagine one where it takes like the world into account.

Looks nice but as usual the difference between sp and mp is like night and day, sp looks sort of realistic, whereas mp looks almost cartooney.

Can't what for BF4, hope it lives up to the hype!

It won't, but it'll still be the best MP shooter around. Just like Haswell didn't live up to the hype, but at the end of the day, it's still the fastest processor around.

LOL at the "Pre-order to receive the Battlefield 4 China Rising Expansion Pack." Fuck you, EA.

I think all the complaining about the lens flare and stuff is funny.

Lens flare is exactly as it reads. Its a flare anomaly that happens through the lens. The human eye doesn't see lens flares naturally.

Its a cheap trick to try and make things dramatic. And its usually overused as much in video games as it is in a JJ Abrams movie.

I agree with certain effects being overused. It's usually been the case though, these trends. Brown, bloom, and blur anyone?

The one that is immersion breaking for me though is the liquid on the camera lens. It is such an overused effect that makes no sense, especially in first person. Occasionally it is used in a way that makes sense, like when someone is wearing a mask or full body suit.

I mean really, I get blood or rain splashed directly onto my eyeball and it just runs down my field of vision like water running down glass from 12 inches away?

We dont know that, BF3 didnt have the blue filters before the official release.

It'd be fine if they included an option to turn it off without risk of being banned. The fact they stood steadfast on that artistic direction without giving an option was absurd.

You've clearly never been in a porno while wearing goggles! ;) :p

QFMFT

Can't stand blood, water, anything on the screen.

Think of a game as you playing the character with a Camera as a head.
These "realism" arguements are becoming very silly
