The Australian Government's Classification Board has banned Saints Row 4 for, among other things, 'sexual violence.'

"In the Board's opinion, Saints Row 4, includes interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context," the organization said in the statement. "In addition, the game includes elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards. Such depictions are prohibited by the computer games guidelines."

Seriously, why would a game maker need to include such things? That's just bad.

While I personally agree that such things should be excluded from games, or music, or movies, (note the notation they said "which are not justified by context") I'm not going to censor it or support censoring it. It's one of those things that should be left to the viewer/ player. However, it is the responsibility of the parent to restrict kids from having/ viewing/ playing such things.

If it is justified by the story the story they're trying to tell, such as a story of a victim of such violence or someone brought to justice after doing such things, I could call it worth the inclusion, even if I wouldn't watch such things, but to just include it as some sort of reward or "fun" for the characters, that's just wrong. I hope plenty of players refuse to buy it because such things are included so the producers make sure to exclude it on any other games they make.

Have they banned the bible yet? Pretty sure it has more sexual violence than Saints Row 4 as well as Phineas being rewarded for spearing an interracial or inter-tribal (depending on your "interpretation") couple while they were in the act of f**king.

They recently changed the rating requirements in Australia for video games so the game may not be that awful with the adult themes but their restrictions have become that more strict.

saints row sucks anyway it's like watching tv all this glamorized urban thug bullshit

Oh please, get off your high horse. The game includes crude jokes about a gangster who becomes the president of the united states, gains superpowers, and fights off an alien invasion. Highbrow it is not, but the whole point of free speech is that the government can't decide whats ok or not. I don't know maybe there is a satirical lesson to be learned about <insert hot button subject here> inside the game hidden inside fart jokes and big boobs. Just because that's the medium it chose to paint it's picture in doesn't mean the government should ban it.

While they are at it maybe they should buy some copies and burn them in the public square.

of main concern should be the differences between how the US and Australia are handling these kinds of content.

We have australia with low rates of violence and drug use saying that they don't want video games depicting rapes and cocaine use/sales in graphic, positive ways.

and then we have the US with its world leading rates of violence and illicit drug use refusing to even label the game so that parents could take the initiative and refuse to buy the game for their kids.

Are you kidding me? Rating: M

Very clear what the rating is in the US, I for one however am for choice :|

Doesn't Australian initially ban almost everything half decent though? They had all the nonsense with the M rating stuff a while back. I'd almost think banned in x# countries could be badge to put on the box / steam page to drive up sales. Granted, the game does appear a little over the top but basically that's the selling point of this game line since #3.

And someone brings in the Bible, again. Sigh....

Anyway, back on topic.

Didn't they ban SR3, back then too?

Knowing that there are cartoons for kids with hidden adult humor must keep you awake at night.

the article was written at 6am today, June 25th and states:
"The game has so far not been rated in the U.S."

Wait, what? Australia finally has an R18+ rating... and it's still banned? Did the classification board not get the memo that they are now allowed to classify games as R18+ instead of banning them?

Why does it matter its not like the Aussies cant just import the game even though its more money they can still get it....

They are obviously waiting for the HOLYCRAPWTFBBQ+++ rating.

In keeping with the Saints Row games completely off-the-wall theme...

"Banned in Australia", while it will cost them sales, should garner more sales elsewhere. You can't buy this kind of marketing material for a game like this!

(feel bad for those living in Australia though! :( )

Australia has spiders and deadly snakes that can bite your dick off, but are scared of low brow humor?

Of things to make illegal out of context drug use or sensationalized sexual violence. I really don't have a problem with. Perhaps I am just crazy. (IE: I have no problem with banning them from general sale. )

As has already been noted, every game released in the US has a rating. And games rated M require you to be 17+ to buy (according to the law, not everywhere will enforce it).

I'd like to point out two things. One is that the people in Australia who want to play it will do so, regardless of this "ban". I can guarantee that violence rates in Australia will not rise due to this game being played. I still play the third game from time to time and I have yet to go on a killing spree in the real world. I don't even own a gun, nor do I want one. Second, the game will be rated M when it is released (maybe shortly before it's released?). I'm not sure how that works, but it's the same as "This film has not yet been rated by the MPAA" you sometimes see on film trailers here. It doesn't mean it won't have a rating, just that it doesn't have one right now.

"Modesty goes a long way"

I know I'm going to be hated for this... but I wish other countries would stand up for decent morals. It's one of the reasons why society has taken a huge nose dive over the years. But instead people rather watch MTV and see who Snooki is spreading her legs apart for next.

It's almost like people have free will.

Sad that you have quotes from two men who knew that government (The US, of course) had no place passing down laws like this in your sig.

It's both funny and sad how seriously some ppl are regarding the "violence" in SR4.

dude....it's Saint's Row...it's a game where the story parodies the game stories of certain other games and takes it up a few notches.
Shoot, SR3 was awesome in that it was funny and made fun of GT* series of games.

SR4 adds a superhero vs aliens flare to that.
Heck, where else are you going to find a "dubstep gun" or the "Inflate-O-Ray"? :D

I preordered 2 copies on steam (it has co-op play which makes it even better)

Exactly, if only we practiced Sharia Law, because the Middle-East is proof that freedoms, quality of life, equality, and GDP are so much improved there compared to North America and Europe where those, ehem, Atheists can walk around without fear of stoning.

The would be from the Book of Jason Voorhees.

It's not just "Sharia" that does this. Ask any fundy xtian. They'll demand the same thing. If only government would "do something" about "morals." They're all for "religous freedom" as long as that religion is theirs.

Poor Australians...I'd hate to live in a nanny state such as that. Oh wait, the US is slowly but surely becoming one.

No no no we're far more advanced than those islanders. Here we can watch, read, speak whatever we want as long as we are monitored by PRISM 24/7.
