I have some cards running at 90C. I just don't care anymore. After seeing my brother's computer (Q6600 and HD 6850) running at absurd temperatures due to broken CPU AND GPU fans for who knows how long, I'm not too worried about high temperatures. I honestly think thermal expansion and contraction would cause more wear and tear, than running a GPU non-stop at 80-90C (apart from maybe the GPU fan, which should be ok if kept clean).\

Also, anyone have recommendations to some cheap PCIe risers that will not burn out on me or just fall apart from handling?

I'd recommend seller Nextronics on Amazon. I've been buying my latest risers from this seller and can say they've all worked and are durable. We're constantly modifying the risers, unplugging them, and switching card/cable combos in our testing and they're still working.

Search for risers in the search field after following the link to their seller profile.

Couple questions:
1). What driver version are you guys using?
2). What version of cgminer?
3). Do you configure a separate instance of cgminer for each card? Or one for each system?

1. 12.8
2. 3.1.0
3. Either or, doesn't matter.

Thanks. I'm switching over from BTC to LTC and I'm trying to get the hang of it. I wasn't getting very good hashrates from my cards, so I'm going back to the drawing board to figure out why.

I'm only running a 7770 and a 7950 sitting around 740 Mhash on BTC right now. I'm really tempted to switch over too. The cost of the old graphics cards sure have been high lately, I have several systems ready to roll as soon as I can just find some graphics cards for a decent price

5970s are amazing miners apparently...which is why its hard to find them...honestly...I recommend grabbing 7950s as you can afford them...they're really the best performance/$ and can usually OC really damn well.

I'm new to mining but my plan is craigslist for the next purchases and of course watching on here but depending on rebates my main cash might just go into 7950's. If you can sell the games fairly easily and dont mind rebates it can be a decent price then made better by running cooler than most of those older cards

What's up with coin prices. When will they go back up?

I hope you intended that as a rhetorical question. If we could predict the future, we'd be rich and not posting that info here.

Coin prices will go up when demand increases. There's too many miners willing to sell for $2.xx, obviously because otherwise the price would go up.

So who is holding hoping it goes up and who is selling as they mine. I almost want to turn my 6 gpus off :(

I'm glad I sold ~350 coins @ $3.

Edit: I'm sure I will be back later and say I regret it lol (once it hits $100)

it all comes down to if you need the money. Personally I'm setting up as an investment later this week when more hardware comes in I'm making the switch from BTC as I build the new setup. I don't NEED the cash until about 4mnths down the road or possibly longer. the other option is to sell to cover more hardware purchases which is the most common thing.

I'm holding. I don't need the income from selling LTC. I'd just like to recoup hardware purchase cost within a year. But it would have been nice to sell at $3+ and then buy them back cheaper. Its still profitable to mine for me at $2 per, heck even $1. My electricity is cheap.

cgminer --scrypt --shaders 1792 --intensity 13 --worksize 128 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 8192

Single 7950 for now until I figure out a good config. For the life of me, I can't get the intensity over 13 with those settings. Anytime I go over 13, it gives me HW errors, and I'm only hashing around 280 Kh when I know the card should be good for 550+. Any ideas?

12.8 drivers / CGMiner 3.1.0

open a cmd prompt and type:
setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100

Then bump your shaders to 22400 and bump the intensity to 19.
for a core speed of ~1000 mhz and mem around 1300, it should get you over 600 kH/s

also, update your drivers. I'm not sure if those old 12.8's will work as well.

shaders or thread concurrency?

I was recommended those drivers by USMCGrunt. Newer 13.5's work better for you?

I seem to get a little bit better hashrate with 13.4 vs. 12.8. Intensity above 13 results in HW errors. Not sure what the deal is

Did you do the gpu_max_alloc_percent command? that is the usual reason for not being able to go over I=13 without massive HW errors (when you have TC above 8196)

Yeah, I did it, but I still get HW errors above 13.

Now if I use GUIminer, I can run any intensity I want and not get HW errors, which makes no sense because it's just a front end for cgminer. I'll have to play with it more and see what I can come up with.

I had same problem with HD5850 (win7) - solution for me: set both shaders and thread-concurrency in bat file, to cross 13 barrier.

kirby, you have to increase your thread concurrency after you do that... did you bump it up to somewhere in the 20,000 region?

also, i highly recommend just using the cgminer.conf file, and not bothering with batch files.

ok...thanks...I'll give it a try.

I just brought a pair of 6870's online this morning. Wow what a driver problem I had! I couldn't get anything but HW errors while mining for the longest time on just the 6870's so I did a clean install of windows and tossed on some old drivers and it started working instantly.

I've been using cgwatcher to help automate cgminer and its a great way to basically set it up and walk away.

2x6870's
1x7770
1x7950

I'll have 4 6950's come in about a week (sender used parcel post to ship across the country WTF?)

Speaking of cgwatcher. Can anyone give some feedback on it? Sounds neat and I've been thinking about using it on our rigs here.

Looks to be a pretty good program, even more useful once the dev completes work on cgmonitor which is a tie-in program that allows you to view cgwatcher stats from a remote machine. I tried it but I can't get CGMiner to work on two of my rigs otherwise i'd use it. Has the ability to restart cgminer if it crashes, restart GPUs if they become sick, restart the system and start cgminer, and lots of other stuff.

its fantastic once you get it working but takes some time to get it going just right. My 4x 6950's are on BTCGuild still because I've had issues getting litecoin working right on them. I'd rather have them on BTC working 24x7 than up and down mining elsewhere.

Litecoin seems a bit goofy with it so far

last night I went ahead and brought my 6950's over to invasion and the weirdest thing happened. Any intensity 13 or up doesn't give HW error it flat out blue screens the computer on me. This is of course after mining BTC 24/7 for a solid week without any crashing thanks to cgwatcher keeping my temps low and restarting the miner from time to time.

I'm gonna check to see if its power draw since I'm using a thermaltake 850w but doesn't seem like power draw after running BTC for as long as I did

^ generally errors above intensity 13 on scrypt mining are bcause you haven't done a high enough thread concurrency ... check earlier in the thread for the set_gpu_max_alloc command and then auto generate the bin file and it should pop out a TC between 20000-24000; use whatever it gives you, that will be close to the maximum for your cards/rig

I did both of those. This morning messing with it I was able to get it working solid with the cores set at 650 instead of the 800-900 it was going strong with BTC. Intensity can run at 19 or 20 now but the second I ramp the GPU clock speeds up it'll either lose power or blue screen on me.

I set the memory down at 400. does LTC hashrates change much with the memory speed being up?

Yes, set the memory speed up higher.
