The gang over at ALT+SEC have published a review of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 today. For comparison purposes, you can see our evaluation here.

The GeForce GTX 780 is obviously the direct replacement for the GTX 680, but we are still looking at the Kepler architecture here. So whereas the GTX 680 was based on a fully functional Kepler GK104 GPU, the GTX 780 is based on a cut down GK110 GPU. It’s probably best to do a brief overview of NVIDIA’s GPU line-up at this point to help understand what we mean by this.

The markup for these over the 680 (more than +50%) seems a bit insane to me.

$650 vs $500 (release prices). That is about 30%...

The ridiculous part is that GTX 680s are still over $400 when the 770 is $400 and performs better, same with GTX 670 pricing.

The top end is never going to make sense in terms of cost : performance.

I went from 680SLI to 780SLI and I'm very happy because my goal was more performance in a system that can only hold 2 cards.

I have limited desk space and I don't want to compromise that so to me, the cost was worth it. If I had space for a bigger system, I might have just added a 3rd 680.

No joke man! 20% discount for the delay. I have been a prime member for 10 years so maybe that had something to do with it.

Man, must have been nice to join in the beta stages of prime then......I COULD imagine you calling them and then getting the discount. No company that large is going to discount anything unless complaints are made.

I guess you are trolling along here.

Of course I called to complain and that is exactly why they discounted the order. You're absolutely correct! They would have never done anything other wise and being such a long time prime customer I know when to call and ask questions. They've always been a great company to me, when my Kindle Paperwhite order was delayed they gave me $50 gift card for the Kindle store after I called. I apologize if I wasn't being clear but in no way was I trying to troll. I assumed that people would know I called about the delay, since I'm sure if anyone here ordered a $600 product then it never arrived you would call the company who shipped said product.

I've been a prime member for 6 years and they've been great to me, but never discounted a product 20% and I've bought over $22k worth of stuff from Amazon during that time.

Not exactly sure why the representative did it and it was the first time something so extreme had ever been done for me! I just bought my card there because of their awesome return policy, I normally buy computer parts from Newegg or NCIX. I guess i just got lucky with a very nice representative.

To kind of back up the dude, a year ago my room mate ordered a GPS from Amazon (~$400) and it was stolen from our doorstep. He filed a police report and all that stuff, then called Amazon and they shipped him another one (to his work this time) for free. They didn't ask for any of the police report information or anything. They just took his word for it and said, well, here ya' go.

Totally different scenario and based on what I've seen from Amazon this one is actually possible.

This is a email from amazon after I complained! I don't know what else to tell you man. Either believe it or don't I got a great deal on my 780. Similar to the situation situation that somehispster brought up. I ordered a PSP from Amazon at launch with overnight delivery then I never received it. Call them after 3 days and asked where the package was they stated it was delivered already. They looked it up and it showed that it was delivered but left at the door. The customer service rep put me on hold talked to her manager and when she got back she confirmed the address then sent another free of charge. Amazon has some of the greatest customer service I don't even know why you think this is so out of the ordinary.

What incentive does he have to lie, though? Going by Ockham's Razor, the most simple explanation is it actually happened and he told us about it because it is true.

Now, we can start positing other assumptions and multiply externalities, but it isn't necessary as we already have the most simple and valid explanation given the available information.

It appears to me that any disbelief of the given explanation is ultimately due to jealousy or a sense of unfairness. Although it is possible for this to be the reason for the anecdote - specifically that the poster derives some sort of pleasure from the chagrin of others - it assumes too much for too little.

Besides, the world (and, by extension, internet forums) is a better place if you simply assume positive intent.

EDIT: That having been said, I'm still waiting for the EVGA SC ACX 780 to come back in stock at Amazon (it has been a few weeks). There's one in stock near me at Microcenter, but then I'd have to pay $40 tax :(

That is the exact model I wanted. I just did not have the patience to wait.

Because everything posted on the internet is truth and no one has ever told a lie or even stretched the truth even the slightest on the internet. Are you new to the internet? If so congratulations, its a bold new world for you.
