3dfx Voodoo5 6000 First Aircooler Edition

It isn't like an old video card has some sort of antique collector's value, and if it did, then keeping it original would be a priority. This project is a waste of time. I understand doing crazy stuff that makes little sense but this one baffles even the looniest of people..
The Voodoo 5 6000 was never released. It's quite rare and it IS collectible. A used Voodoo 5 6000 will set you back a decent amount more than a brand new Titan.

Wow that card still in use in 2013 that's impressive!

To me what your doing is akin to restoring a vintage car!

Kudos!

I'm pretty loony, and I think it's awesome! That is some excellent work for a great old card.

Let's see your machine. Custom? Anything different, or plain black/beige case? What do you say about the old NES machines being customized?

YES!!! Now I want to go dig up my stuff. Ahh, I still remember unboxing my Hercules TNT

Yeah, I was wondering that as well. Of all the things to throw money at, why not a modern card that would actually see some use?

Perhaps this is a test to see if it could be done and a similar effort will go into his $1000 GPU?

That right there is a fine piece of craftsmanship. [H]at-off to you, Sir.

There's only about 1000 of these cards produced for testing, and only the final 2 revisions worked with any reliability. Those working batches likely total less than 50 cards.

It's a very rare piece of history.

When nvidia bought 3dfx, all the VSA100 chips were destroyed. Probably some of those early revision cards as well.

Would like to see a vmod and overclock that badboy =)
attempt to try to run a modern game and see how it fairs

My first real video card was a rendition verite v2100 diamond stealth, than a canabus pure 3d 6mb 3dfx add on card (that i destroyed, brother put a heatsink on the processor and i later tried to pry it off - broke the chip off). than a tnt2 ultra 32mb ( i loved that card, ended up giving it to a friend a few years later so hey could play counterstrike) . then had a geforce 200 ti, 6800gt was my more expensive purchase, than 7800gt, 8800gt, now gtx 650 ti. I wish i had kept some of those old cards though just for nostalgia .

But i remember being a teen when voodoo 3, 4 and 5s started rolling out and wished i had one lol

So is the deal that he bought a card and it didn't come with a cooler?

No. It's a rare pre-production version of a card few have ever seen. He's giving it a super pimp cooler. The cost is insane but so what?

It's the last work from a great company before being gobbled up for their IP by nvidia.

Problem with hardware, is its only compatible with the generation it came out, in most cases.

There are a lot of games, which will not play in windows 7 64bit, even in compatibility mode. To me I still have a Windows XP machine which I keep all my old games installed on, in case I get the urge to play. (quite often actually) .Running a modern machine on a old OS causes driver headaches as well.

very nice cooler, for a neat piece of computer history.

Hello everybody,

Soon the cooler will be mounted on the Voodoo5 6000 card.

I will show you the pictures.

I am a 3dfx collectors. I have more than 10 Voodoo5 6000 cards.

Regards,
Trevor

I would have really loved to see more pictures of the actual fab process of that cooler.

How much do you have in materials alone? Not including the cost of the tools required to make that.

Look my 3 old coolers on 3 of my cards.

Ignore all the hate man. I love that you do this. Reminds me of how exciting the graphics card race used to be.

I have to agree with the "this is ridiculous" crowd, the weight has to be too much. I would have made a custom water block.

This is freaking awesome. So many people in this thread completely miss the point. This is what being an enthusiast is all about.

Nice work OP, looks fantastic!

I'm ok with completely missing the point of spending ~$2500 on a cooler for a 12 year old video card.

Some people have money. He has 10 of these cards, which is almost half the total working ones ever made.

2300 Euros to make a cooler for an incredibly outdated video card? That's some dedication. So...what's the motivation here? Seems like a ridiculous amount of money to dump into such an old card.

Also, did you do the design on the cooler? Do you have any specific qualifications for creating that? Seems awfully airflow restricted.

This thing looks like a better cooler than most everything I've seen, heat dissipation is the name of the game.
Edit
Wow so many haters in this thread, people in general have much more expensive "useless" hobby's than this guys video card, and in some ways I can relate, I love my old 9700pro and 8800gtx because of how hard they worked for me. I wish I was a gamer back when 3dfx was around, I'd probably feel the same way as OP. Whats wrong with owning the most bad ass voodoo ever? People buy old cars and soup them up just to go putt putt down the street, they overpay but they enjoy it. Whats so difficult to understand? Damn

If this isn't [H], I don't know what is. Excellent job, sir ! Although any sense is lacking in this project, all the awesomeness and quality is dripping off of this cooler.
