HTC One Google Edition for $599 on Play Store just announced

/boing

Good luck getting your hand on one, no pun intended :) Rumors are that HTC will have extremely low limited quantities of the Google Edition One at launch, someone said only like 50,000. HTC wants to gauge interest first, see if they can sell 50k of them at first.

Is the ATT One, locked down like they did to their version of the Galaxy S4 ?

Or can the ATT One, be rooted and flash ROM's and kernels with CWM or TWRM ? I used to have the One X, and that thing sucked for flashing, due to being S-On, and having to use the bootloader and boot.img to flash with Command prompt stuff, etc... really sucked. Would like to have no S-On crap and have to flash through the bootloader,

I just like to reboot to the Recovery only, flash the zip, and be done. Can that be done with the ATT One, or would I need he "Developer Edition" only to do that ?

A quick scan of XDA shows that the AT&T HTC One has had the bootloader unlocked and has some form of custom recovery. Check for yourself to see if it meets your needs.

Not sure if it has been addressed already, but will One be pretty up to date or will only get like one update.

HTC's track record over the past few years has been to offer 1-2 Android revisions on global flagship devices.

Their 2011 flagship, the HTC Sensation, was updated from 2.3 to 4.0, and then dropped. However, while that's technically one update, devices launched on 2.3 had an update conundrum because of the delay between 2.3 and 4.0 (3.x was tablet only).

Their 2012 flagship, the HTC One X, launched on 4.0 and got a 4.1 update. It is slated for a 4.2 update with Sense 5, with only rumors surrounding anything beyond that. EDIT The 4.2 update was released today for global variants. Carrier branded updates will trickle out.

If I got a One today, I'd be fairly confident that it will be well supported for at least a year. HTC's flagship devices don't get the same level of support as a Nexus or Samsung flagship, but they're good enough for most.

Thanks, was thinking on possibly getting the ATT One, and hopefully we will get a port of the "Google Edition" ROM shortly after it's release next month ? And would like to flash it through recovery, not having to go through the command prompt and need a boot.img file, and all that crap.

This is interesting;

HTC also provided another interesting tidbit: it's currently "examining the best way to support early adopters of the carrier bought stock One" that may prefer the stock Android experience over Sense, perhaps by way of an AOSP ROM. The company isn't providing specifics on that front just yet. Still, if you're a One owner feeling burned by today's announcement, there may be hope.

This would be great... I want stock Android. Sense doesn't bother me that much, except for some things like BlinkFeed and I don't like having to use third party launchers.

Bootloader is unlocked but still S-on (which doesn't mean much) through HTC's request site. Custom recoveries are out, kernels and roms are flowing freely. You flash everything, kernel & rom though recovery, no command prompt needed outside of unlocking the bootloader. You won't see as much on the AT&T One's section on XDA, but they're completely compatible with the international version's roms. That's the section where the good stuff is located.

OH, and people have already achieved S-Off, it's just not released yet, nor do I believe it's even necessary with this phone.

That being said, this phone is amazing, and the best I've used in years. My girl, who is RIDICULOUSLY picky about her phones, the size, the feel, the UI, everything, just swapped from a 4S to the black One. The only other phone she came close to liking was the Razr M, just because of the size of it.

Problem here is that it kills the usefulness of the camera. Honestly, I'm a HUGE AOSP fan, and usually run a modified AOSP rom like PAC-man or Vanilla Rootbox, but I'm loving the Sense rom with Nova pro as my launcher. The only thing that gets me is the lock screen, which I hate.

Thanks ent :)

So how is the battery life of the One, compared to other phones you may have had ? I am on the Nexus 4, currently, and looking to upgrade to the One, mainly for the awesome screen, my N4 screen is piss poor in off angle viewing, really looks like layer of Vaseline over the screen when looking at it from an angle, the speaker sucks, and the WiFi and radios are not the best.

Right now my N4 gives me like 4.5h On Screen time, and overall battery life of around 10h to 12h on a workday, and weekends I can get 16h to 18h total battery.

I just left Verizon with an iPhone 5 with unlimited data to move to AT&T with the HTC One and I couldn't be happier. The one is an amazing phone. I tried moving to Android on the S3 and it only lasted about a month before I traded it for an iPhone 5.

I switched for 2 reasons. Mainly I wanted to switch to AT&T (in my area ATT service is leeps and bounds better than Verizon) and 2 because I really really wanted the One. It seems Verizon will be getting the phone and thats great news because HTC deserves all the praise this phone is getting.

Even my wife who had a 4 for 2 years wanted to try the One and so far she loves hers too.

Battery life I'd say is about on par with the iPhone 5. Only thing I noticed is that it definitely charges slower than the 5. For me though in the building I work in my Verizon 5 would barely get 3G and thus the battery would die quickly. Sometimes I couldn't even send iMessages. My AT&T one on the other hand gets 4G LTE in the building and is very very fast. Obviously this varies from person to person but just thought I'd mention it.

Love the OS on this phone AND 4.2.2 is right around the corner coming out this month so it will be on par with the S4 software wise. I really like the blink feed feature. I find myself checking that out more often than going on the internet and checking my usual news tech sites.

The Screen is AMAZING. As most of you know the S4's screen is a little more vibrant but I prefer the more natural looking One's screen. Personal preference here. Viewing angles are superb.

The things I don't like about the phone is that I find it slippery. No doubt because the phone is all metal but something worth noting. I plan on getting a case in the near future. Something that just protects it from scratches.

Also I find it kind of annoying that there is no hardware button on the bottom of the phone like the S4 has. Makes reaching to the top of the phone to turn it on a task. I fixed this issue though....well sort of. There is an App called screen wake up and you can wake the phone up a could different ways. Basically I have it set to wake the screen up if it detects the phone is being moved. So if the phone is on my desk and I pick it up the screen will wake up and then I can unlock it.

What are you all getting battery life wise ? Can this phone go 14h - 16h on network use no WiFi all day ? Or no way ?

Zorachus, I have a bit of a unique situation... My desk at work is in an almost complete dead zone. I have either no signal, or it barely clings to one bar. I walk outside of my office, and I get 5-10 texts/missed call alerts at once. That being said, you KNOW what that does to battery life. My Note 2 would go from a full charge to 40% or so just sitting there.

So at the end of the day, my One has about 50%. Maybe it gets better reception, so it's not wasting power looking for service. Maybe it's more efficient. But yeah, it lasts me all day, and it's at around 15% when I pop it on the charger before I go to sleep. Can't complain.

Verizon just announced the HTC One, lol.

Retarded that they're launching it that late after every other carrier, but at least it's coming. I have an upgrade in August, so I think this will be the phone for my wife. I will be happy with my Note 2 for the forseeable future. I loath HTC for their almost nonexistant support on the Rezound that my wife currently has, but since the One isn't a crappy Verizon exclusive, I'm sure the One will get much better support. I feel equally as bad for the DNA owners; expect one major update several months after every other flagship has it, then nothing else (exactly what happed with the Rezound and Thunderbolt).

Its launching late because vzw declined to carry it initially. Hopefully this marks the beginning of the end to the DROID line and Verizon finally rises above its device arrogance.

One can hope, but I doubt that will happen. Verizon will probably bastardize it too with 16GBs and replace the HTC button/logo with a Verizon one or something, lol.

I can say after rooting to the Nightlies 10.1 rom last night that the battery life lasts WAY longer. 10 hours off the charger and my phone was only at 50%.

I haven't rooted my phone yet. I want to, but am not sure where to start. I see a bunch of threads on XDA forums and am not sure which one to trust. (as for a rooting guide and flashing without issues, and yes I've rooted many, many phones, but am new to the HTC scene)

I have not rooted because there is no need to. Stock ROM smooth as heck.

I would like a custom kernel for sweep2unlock and logo2menu, but not at the cost of losing BLE.

so my phone alternatess between 3g and 4g while the battery lasts for two days
while on my hth evo 4g battery would last like 40 min tops on 4g

FWIW, I rooted my T-Mobile HTC One and simply could not find a ROM that I liked. Overall I didn't even care for the phone and took it back. I know it is new and the ROM quality will come with time, but wait until the official 4.2.2 release happens or the Google Edition drops and HTC releases source code. That should be a huge improvement in ROMs.

I rooted my One 2 days ago to the newest Nightlies rom and WOW. I thought I'd be fine with the stock OS but I'm much happier that I switched.

Probably the best thing since switching roms is that my battery life is AMAZING. Today is a great example. took it off the charger at 6 and its now 7PM. 13 hours off the charger with 2 hours of on screen time with ZERO wifi all 4G and I'm just now hitting 50%.

My iPhone 5 got no where near that. I'm pretty sure it would be dead now or close to it.

On the stock rom my battery life was very on par with the iPhone but not its absolutely absurd.

By Nightlies I'm assuming you are referring to CyanogenMod. Yeah, that is an awesome ROM. I didn't bother flashing it on my One since it still has one major bug that is a dealbreaker for me (bluetooth audio streaming doesn't work). Once that is fixed it is absolutely the way to go. I don't mind Sens 5, but it still has some utterly boneheaded missteps and omissions.

Like I said, once that Google Edition and source code comes out that phone is going to blow up and I may even revisit it.

I Think they fixed it. I have the latest rom and I was using blue tooth audio yesterday. Was having problems getting it to work today though. I had problems on the stock rom so yeah.

The problem was never the output. It's the input. No bluetooth mic. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Looks like signups are open again for getting $100 credit when buying an HTC One and sending in your old phone. If you have an older phone laying around that is eligible, this is a solid deal.

Just wanted to update this. Went searching for the cheapest working "smartphone" on eBay to trade in and - of course, Blackberry won the day. I bought two working Blackberry 8350i on eBay for 10 bucks a piece shipped, took a gamble, and shipped them in to HTC. I just received both $100 rebates.

HTC One Android 4.3 update has already been delivered last week to dev and unlocked devices last week. Now the update is rolling out for Canadian carriers!

Anyone here on the official 4.3 update?

4.3 update fucked my bluetooth up. Have to turn it off and on to get it to connect to my truck now.
