Video Game Tropes vs. Women Part 2

dope music in that video... wait lol did she just say pornicious though??? :p

I don't even game, haven't played more than 10 and I can think of at least Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith where Mara Jade has to save Kyle from the dark side... not to mention spending like 8 hours getting my ass kicked by Almalexia in TESIII Morrowind Tribunal :D

yeah, 3 minutes is enough... it seems like society has a long ways to go before they realize there are actually different video games of different qualities and genres?? like, why are we caring about mainstream video games when mainstream media is almost definitely more sexist and more popular? because of the medium of video games, gamers are at least making choices about what games they play, and talking about them as opposed to people who watch TV all day and get bombarded by advertisements. I think they're probably still a majority, no?

Yes its 2013, but obviously yes there are still sexist computer games being released... not in higher quantities than sexist TV shows and movies!!! just my 2 cents...

Also, you don't have to be a negative man to be sexist... movies marketed towards women can be sexist (and no I'm not talking about misandry) and since computer games are more popular with guys, computer games that are actually marketed towards women are like, way more sexist apparently http://allwomenstalk.com/10-great-girly-computer-games

and another thing, gender equality is gender abolishment! and, something about smaller minorities and angry people!!!111 *rants*

I hope she doesn't apply the same logic to real life. Imagine this:

"Steve, where's your wife?"

"She was abducted yesterday at the mall"

"WHAT?!?! Didn't you do anything?"

"She can handle herself...besides, I didn't want to objectify/demean her in any way."

"That's messed up dude"

"I know, right? Do you know how to make a sammich?"

My sister doesn't play games because she thinks they were designed strictly for men. If you really think about it they are. She loves her Harlequin Romance novels though so it's not like she's anti male. She just thinks that women are dumb fucks in games. Since she is educated, successful, and independent; she just can't connect with video game writers. She's not dumb and accepts that women are victimized in real life more often then men. She knows that she's not as physically strong as a man. But she also knows that every time she plays a game she's shouldn't see some dumb broad tied to a train track. It's insulting to her that the stupid 'B" allowed herself to be put into the situation in the first place.

If that makes sense to you. :)

I'm fine with a certain group of feminists, and wouldn't mind at all more women portrayed in a better light in all media, but these videos are just too much. I know you're passionate about the subject, but I really think this one has lost her way. I'm not certain she is doing more good than harm.

Yawn....zzzzz.....feminist. They want to be treated equal, yet they want man to treat them like we are gentlemen. If they want to be treat equal, next time round i see one of them, i'll punch them in the arm and say hi. I think feminist movement is a waste of time and breath. Sure, they can make a game where the woman is the hero, thats fine with me cause if the game is good, i'll play it. But i like to see how game developers are going to make a chick lug a man around, carry him out of danger, etc. Ever wonder why most feminist look like brutes and/or are lesbians? Because the law of nature is the male species is the physically stronger one while the femal species is the emotional stronger one.

Indeed. Like I said previously, it makes for lazy writing a lot of the time, but the complaints about how demeaning and misogynist it is.. gtfo. Of course her default response would be "well you're a guy, so your opinion doesn't count" or something equally as sexist, go figure.

Damn, where do we sign up to get that kind of money to make YouTube videos about the way male gamers are perceived? :D

well, Steve, you just added to her publicity so she can get more money to make stupid videos.

One, Tropes Are Not Bad and two, while there may be a point about how women are portrayed in video games (shallow love interests, eye candy, worthless characters), she's not the one to make it. Has she seen Commander Shepard lately?

TVTropes does a much, much better job at describing video game tropes (including those which portray women badly).

Only a Feminist would make a 25 minute YouTube video talking about "damsels in distress".

Didn't watch the video, but I was severely disappointed to see the video (and the entire channel) have comments disabled. That would have been some good entertainment.

Silly questions, but WHO puts the scantily dressed women with outrageous proportions in the games?

Um... the publishers and the devs, in that order.

It might be good for these feminists to stop assigning intent that cannot be proven.

I have been buying good games since long before a PC was even capable of graphically depicting sexually objectified women. So what's the difference? I bought good games then... I buy good games now.

SOME of them have unrealistic babes in them.

So do SOME movies.

Let me ask the rest of the guys here:
We are generally happy to stare at a pretty woman if stuck right in our face, but would you have skipped an excellent game, or movie just because it lacked enough superbabes?

The Sims is probably the most popular game, and I don't think boys play it.

When ever there is a big even we hear a lot about booth babes, I don't ever recall hearing about some booth boys.
Ever see daytime television? Notice how many gay men seem to be involved, yet lesbians are rare? It's called knowing how to cater to your audience.

If you think of games strictly on console, and big name advertising, then year games are made for men. But we know games exist outside of this. Farmvillle is very female centric, as is the Sims.

Should we have more female hero's in games? Yes, absolutely, but women aren't generally attracted to this sort of thing. Do women play games? Yes. Do women work on cars? Yes, but all this is just not frequent.

So yea, expect games where men save women with giant breasts. A good compromise is women with large breasts that kick ass. Just not like Bubblgum Chainsaw.

Before women go crazy here, us guys don't exactly look like this.

I'd be interested to see them. Link?

This is a great video response.

It's a good starting point in my opinion as (while she doesn't outright express feminist theory) she uses a very important idea to discredit Anita: Agency.

Anita essentially removes any agency these female characters may have, by pigeonholing them herself. The best example from the video above, in my opinion, is Princess Peach and Mario.

If she had her way with her awkward facial hair and nose, every game would be like playing Wii tennis boy vs girl and every game would end in a tie.

For some reason I all I could think about when watching the video is how weird her eyebrows look.

I don't know why people keep saying she is a feminist (herself included). Cue you keep using that word but I don't think it means what you think it means.

One of two things is going on: She has internalized the patriarchy to such an extent that she needs women to be the victim in every situation regardless of context any beyond any extent of reason. Or she is just riding the fame train similar to Jersey Shore/Kardashians/Real Housewives etc etc. One is just sad and two is just a waste. Props to her though for finding a way to profit in a down economy though. I'm sure she already "produced" the whole series in a weekend and is just staggering the release of them. I've seen let's plays with more production value.

This video is funny and pathetic. Never seen a woman that hated being a woman as much as this chic or any other "feminist". (if she even believes the drek she's spilling)

Meh whatever. I don't want to have ordinary looking women in video games. I want them to be superficially appealing. Video games are all about fantasies, role playing in an alternate reality, etc. I don't want to be looking at ugly chicks with a flat chest.

Yet she dolls herself up to look pretty for her audience, which she knows will be mostly male.

There are actually a lot more reasons that that for putting on makeup and dressing nicely and many of them aren't really intended to be for the pleasure of other people.

Sorry my sister doesn't play Farmville, The Sims, etc. She doesn't have a Facebook account. She likes stuff like the original Dragon Age and Witcher II. Witcher II has lustful scenes between Geralt and Triss which she doesn't mind it at all because it fits the story. She reads romance novels. Making every woman naked in a game to sell more copies is a turn off for her.

What she is really infuriated about is nearly every female being a victim aka "village idiot" who must be rescued. What she would like to see is the ability to choose strong female leads more often in gaming. She doesn't expect every game to have a female lead. My sister writes books and short stories thus she fully understands this. What she would like to see is more publishers going after a female audience with great storytelling.

So you can imagine her disappointment in gaming today. Remember everyone doesn't fit into a preconceived notion of class or gender.

I had half a dozen comments / responses to various comments on here, but the fact of the matter is that this lady is a complete sham.

She's a con artist at best. She uses her (limited) knowledge of social/political issues and feminist theory along with her marketing skills to make a brand for herself. She LOVES all the hate she gets, as it means more hits, more KS money.

And the product she made from her KS money? Something that could be done over a long weekend, something that people do for free and with more depth and content and actual f'ing research .

As a feminist who disagrees with this woman and her "research" I'm just gonna drop this here and say I'm not touching this discussion with a ten foot pole other than to say you can be a feminist and also not a hyper-reactionary at the same time.

I was going to say, it's horrible that there's some instances where there's violence against women, yet in just about every game in existence all the enemy that you actually beat/knock out/kill are men, probably in a 99999999999:1 ratio.

But I guess this is what you do when you get study "Women's studies" as a major in school...

BTW, nice how she dolled herself up with makeup for the video, just like a natural female who doesn't need to stick to stereotypes does.

Remember kids, modern American Feminism is a hate group.

Care to educate us on that topic? Let's start with make-up: what are the many reasons for it, outside of the pleasure of other people?

This video has taught me an important lesson. When your girlfriend is captured by Satan, and turned into a bloodthirsty demon hell bent on killing you, harming her in any way is domestic violence. Thanks, Anita!

Actually, no this isn't what you get when you study "Women's studies" in school: It is what you get when you don't understand what you study if your major is "Women's studies". A bit of a difference.

I emailed this to a colleague of mine and she got a good chuckle out of it. We both work at a major university and she is a full professor of "Women's studies" and "English". Let me say that again, this is a person who if Anita is correct in her "research" should be all about supporting and backing her up. I asked her for opinion and she just shook her head and laughed, "C effort," she replied, "at a freshman level of understanding" were her most constructive comments (that I could post here). It's sad that people think that this is what passes for modern or post-feminism (which she is not, she is barely second wave and not a good one at that).

We all have students like this who think their opinion is sooooo ground-breaking and awesome that they come in with what i like to call the "maximum pc," "boot" or "cpu" magazine disease. It usually describes someone who reads a few articles on the subject and thinks that they are an expert in the field. A little knowledge is not the same thing is understanding.

Again, good on her for getting people to white-knight her to the extreme and take their money. A fool and their money and all that.

The list of logical fallacies is too long to type out. Her misunderstanding of human biology, physiology and psychology is astounding, and her ability to misconstrue games in general is impressive.
However, she was clearly away from the kitchen too long in making these videos. /s

Also, nice flannel.

Her flannel is pink.. and that is reinforcing all kinds of female stereotypes... I am apalled at her sexist dress

Out of principle, I don't watch videos with comments/ratings disabled.
