Xbox "Next" or "Infinity" reveal thread. Today is the big day!

That was hilarious!

Also, I truly hate using these words, but Xbox One is the definition of EPIC FAIL!

I can't believe a company failing this badly and FORCING people to hate them, turning a video game console to something that a million other devices offer!

Stupid name
Gimmicky AND FORCED kinect
Forced to be online to install a games for the first time
Mediocre system specs

...etc

WTF, Sony got next gen for free, Nintendo and Microsoft are making things WAY TOO EASY for them.

Normally I couldn't give a fuck what Kotaku thinks , I find their editors very unbalanced and often act like fan flamers to situations that do not need it.

But in this case I believe they nailed today's overall reaction.

http://kotaku.com/that-xbox-one-reveal-sure-was-a-disaster-huh-509192266

Not one of my friends didn't air some kind of concern regarding either used games being worth while on the new system or always online actually being "24 hours then you'll be cut out of the game and most services without a connection" to the Kinect camera always being on (despite what they've said its been confirmed as actually .. still being on) and mic I might add to.

Lots of "features" we do not want or need being forced on us and it seems MS couldn't care less how its received by its gaming audience.

I think if Sony doesn't announce similar crowd displeasing requirements that it will have a serious shot at capturing back the audience its lost since the first Xbox came into the market.

New Xbox Fails To Woo Investors As Sony Stock Shoots Up 9%

Already! I think MS should scrap this and go back to the drawing board and come up with an actual gaming device that doesn't offend everyone.

I will admit I was far more excited for the PS4 than the Xbox One and this reveal just reinforced my opinion.

I find it funny how the two showings contrasted.

Sony didn't show a piece of black plastic, but detailed tech specs a bit more and most importantly, showed games. Lots of games.

Microsoft showed us a black piece of plastic, shared less tech details, and had... 2 games. 1 of which is multi-platform.

If you ask me, I'd rather see games and tech details than what the black plastic will look like.

Really don't like the always online and kinect crap. Don't buy many console games so used game fee doesn't matter to me as much. Seems that you can still play your games you buy on another box if you use your login. Pretty used to this with PC/steam gaming.

Will still probably buy for Forza 5 at launch and the next Halo. Would buy PS4 if there was a GT game at launch.

Why in name of holy GAWD would they call it the XBOX "One" when it is in fact the THIRD XBOX. What the hell is wrong with these people? I mean it is almost like they picked the one name that is absolutely guaranteed to confuse the hell out of the public. It is actually a dumber name than the Wii U. Does anyone have a sock with horse manure in it so I can beat their marketing people over the head with it. Because that is what they deserve.

Also, how do you reveal a console and not discuss the GPU. It is like launching a new car and not talking about the engine!

Also, near silent operation is code for "the GPU sucks so hard we don't need a fan" in my book. There should be heat bellowing out of that mother!

I need some guidance here because I don't even know which company to troll anymore. The problem is if they gimped down the specs to incorporate other features, power consumption, noise ect, then even if PS4 is superior the cross platform games will end up gimped.

I think Valve should just unleash their "Steambox" with like a GTX690 stuffed in it and just nuke them all.

valve balked at the $1k+ price tag...

This thread is hilarious. Here is what I have concluded after reading it:

Everyone on this website hates any feature except gaming, and all other features are stupid and worthless and the key to a successful console launch in 2013 is to make it purely game-centric.

Thank god none of you run a fortune 500 company.

lol if we did windows 8 would no be fudged up and the new system would be centered around *gasp* playing games.

I have a dvr and cable box....why do I need ms to duplicate that functionality at the expense of gaming?

"Looks at Console GAMING & Acc", looks at post. /facepalm. These features are just as useless as my Galaxy Note II's features.

Not that I really care about ANY console (PC Gaming wins every time IMHO) but I was shocked to see what the pre-order price was for the new xbox here in AU.....................$899

Yet another gigantic FAIL from MS, it makes me wonder why MS feels the need to piss ppl off, first we have the disaster that is W8 and now ONE more epic fail

LOL! Yes, because they announced the price already.

Just like the PS4 games, available for pre-order on amazon.com, for $100 dollars.

How is it at the expense of gaming? I'm amazing at home people bitch about extra features. You do know that they're giving you MORE, right?

OHH I'm sorry that I was expecting a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE to be mainly about games, my bad.

/sarcasm

On a more serious note, entertainment/media features are ALWAYS welcome and "nice" to have, but there are a lot of devices that offer these and constantly get updated on a yearly basis, dedicated video game consoles are only created once every 5-7 years, so it's a DAMN shame when they're not mainly about video games.

For someone that brings up fortune 500, you'd think they'd know the diff bw an executive running a company and consumers.

For consumers, new ideas need to be proven and value established for them to lay down cash.

It's the job of the company to prove their ideas and companies know that new ideas are met with resistance, and they can either show proof of some value, or just say fuck it, we're changing shit and nothing you can do about it. MS seems to be doing the latter.

How is it at the expense of gaming?

Well, for one they have to reserve a chunk of memory for all that other stuff I don't care about, meaning less resources available for the games. That's about as a solid expense that you get on a console; memory budget.

Not saying it's the wrong thing to do, but don't come here claiming there's no price to be paid for all this extra fluff. It'll cost hardware, it'll cost personell, it'll cost them money which means it'll cost us money.

I did decide to watch the unveil today, and honestly I was not too excited. I was a bit more pumped for the PS4 than the xbox One (long time xbox 360 fan). I'm not sure, but I think both will be pretty great but really microsoft all you can offer me is tv, sports and call of duty? lmao

Oh man, that highlights video... it's actually one of those "It's funny because it's true".

Oh, well. There's always E3.

Jebus. What are they doing?! Is this a "it's really up to publishers but we've sort of agreed to not talk about it and could everyone just stop asking questions please?!"

I encourage everyone to post stupid shit on twitter about what the XBox One tagged as #potentialscenarios

Just an FYI : http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/sony-confirms-the-ps4-will-play-used-games/

Sony isn't going to require any silly fee and no always online requirement (unless they change their minds from now to E3).

Makes the choice pretty cut and dry.

That article doesn't actually confirm anything of the sort.

“When you purchase the disc based games on PS4, that should work on any hardware,” Yoshida confirmed."

Doesn't even answer the question, really.

What do you mean? He clearly states that any disc based PS4 game will play on any PS4 console/hardware (he probably was pointing out that downloaded games will be a different story) and not one word about fee's for sharing your games with friends.

Microsoft came right out and said "there will be a fee for selling used games or lending them to friends and that when they install the game it will uninstall from your system if it already hasn't to link to their profile".

It sounds to me that the differences are cut and dry.

PS4 will handle used games just fine. Perhaps a fee to play it online against other human components but no fee for just "playing it".

Xbox One will require you to basically "surrender" the game to your friend who pays a fee to play it and locks the game to his account thus transferring the game to him and deleting it from your hard drive. Because every game links to your profile making it near impossible to "share" anything without fee's involved for the Xbox One.

This is what MS is saying right now. Could they change their minds between now and E3 or launch? Of course. But based on the fact that Cloud service will be HEAVILY involved in everything you do on the Xbox One I would honestly doubt this is going to change. We'll get more details about how much the fee will be , if it'll be the full cost of the game , if you could "gift" it to a friend for free or whatever.

Sony wasn't this confusing during its reveal. MS has confused everyone involved about what it plans to do. It would have just made more sense to announce this system and all the titles at E3 instead of this horribly confusing and therefore disappointing event.

I absolutely like that the consoles now offer other functions, like being entertainment center... too bad, that most of those things will be US-only. I really hope, I'll be able to swap my cable box and blu ray player for just one simple box under TV.

I'll be getting the X this round... it sounds more user friendly and has more extras than PS4.

Well keep in mind if you use the One as your primary TV box you'll lose On Demand services and you'll still have to pay for premium services via cable meaning you'll need to have the packages content providers are offering. You can't subscribe to HBO/Showtime/StarZ/Cinemax/Encore without cable through Xbox One as there is yet to be a content provider willing to do so.

If a good media hub is what you want though the One will be better. Just too bad its a console that is now not so much of one..

Getting rid of the bluray player, sure. We don't know how good a of bluray player it is yet. But from what I've read you won't be getting rid of the cable box. In fact I think you'll be getting a specialized one as the One uses pass through from the cable box to do all it's TV stuff.

Must connect to the internet once every 24 hours....
Taken from Kotaku...

So how often does it check your connection? "Depends on the experience," Harrison said.

"For single-player games that don’t require connectivity to Xbox Live, you should be able to play those without interruption should your Internet connection go down. Blu-ray movies and other downloaded entertainment should be accessible when your Internet connection may be interrupted. But the device is fundamentally designed to be expanded and extended by the Internet as many devices are today."

And here's the bombshell:

Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks?

Harrison: I believe it’s 24 hours.

Kotaku: I’d have to connect online once every day.

Harrison: Correct.

So the system is built to work even if your Internet connection goes down, but you still have to be connected at least once a day to use it, according to Harrison. We're not sure exactly what would happen if you don't connect once per day—and that timeframe could change—but this doesn't sound good for anyone who was hoping to use Xbox One without an Internet connection.

next gen as fuck

Fuck, that COD "tech demo" was fucking painful. 2007 graphics aho!

Wonder if both of them are reserving a full AMD64 core for the system (hypervisor/OS). They seem to be considered equals in CPU power now, but if one of them reserve a core and the other don't, that will offset a bit.

Except that those AREN'T at the expense of gaming, they are in ADDITION to gaming. Not a hard concept to grasp.

That 24 hour stuff is not confirmed at all, Mircosoft already came out with a comment about that.

What more do you need? Anyone with a half-rotted zombie brain knows exactly what the game situation will be like on the new xbox. Just like the previous one, with somewhat better graphics.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/407912/microsoft-confirms-pre-owned-fee-for-xbox-one/
UPDATE: secondhand install may incur same fee as brand new purchase, suggests MS rep
Update: Jon Hicks, the editor of Official Xbox magazine, has claimed that pre-owned games will be un-installed from the previous owner's system and installed onto another's. It is not clear if this process would negate a pre-owned fee.

Update 2: Microsoft has neither confirmed nor denied the report in a statement offered to Venturebeat.

"We are designing the Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games," a Microsoft spokesperson said, adding: "We'll have more details to share later".

The comment effectively means that the claim regarding a pre-owned fee is not inaccurate.

Update 3:Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison has suggested that customers who activate a pre-owned retail disc for the Xbox One will need to pay the same price as the original buyer to access the content.

When asked by Kotaku whether the secondhand owner will be "paying the same price we [the original buyer] paid, or less" Harrison responded "let's assume it's a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price."

Harrison also said that owners can trade their secondhand games online, however the company is "not talking about it today".

Update 4: Microsoft's Larry Hryb has clarified statements regarding using owned Xbox One titles on separate devices:

"Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend's house - should you choose to play your game at your friend's house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile."

I would hope the damn Vice President of the company knows more than bloggers so at this point I'm taking his word as the answer. Buy a used game, pay MSRP to activate it on your console. So who put down their preorder?

Half of the announced features (TV integration, NFL integration) will only matter to US consumers. Most of the world's population doesn't live in the US. I think banking the success of your console on features that most of the world can't use or won't care about is a bad idea.

Meanwhile, when it came to the concerns on gaming (used games requiring a fee, Kinect always-on, internet required, etc) the message was confusing and they ultimately confirmed most of the fears in some fashion.

It's not that the rest of the features of the system aren't cool, they're just things that many of us already own devices for. I don't own TV service and I already have a blu-ray player and media PC. This doesn't convince me to buy a Xbox One.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6972/xbox-one-hardware-compared-to-playstation-4/2
This clarifies the questions regarding whether the Xbox One had DDR3 or not...
DDR3 & less shaders in Xbox One vs GDDR5 & more shaders in Ps4 as well as nearly double the memory bandwidth.
Sony opted for an 18 Compute Unit GCN configuration, totaling 1152 shader processors/cores/ALUs. Microsoft went for a far smaller configuration: 768 (12 CUs).
...there’s no escaping the fact that Microsoft has given the Xbox One less GPU hardware than Sony gave the PlayStation 4.
