Okay, so I was playing with obscure settings in Windows XP today and I remembered reading somewhere that turning off digital CD audio in Device Manager would make audio CDs spin more slowly and cause less virbation/noise/whatever. Since I'm using a laptop with tiny speakers, I unchecked the box in this picture and now I get no sound from an audio CD though I can tell from the amount of vibration that the ROM drive is actually running, but a lot more slowly.

Does anyone know why? Is there another setting I'm missing or am I just stuck either ripping the CD or listening to the ROM drive spin at higher speeds?

What do you see in your Sound control panel? Are there other options under "Playback?" If so, have you tried choosing them to see what happens?

Edit: There are also a lot of smart people posting in the Computer Audio forum. You may want to post this question there.

I think I kinda figured it out. I guess analog audio (the not digital audio) requires some sort of direct wiring that doesn't exist in all computers. o_O!

it exists on pc cd/dvd rom drives.. its a cable you run from your dvd drive to your soundcard.. its the old school way of doing the cd audio.. laptops probably don't have that connection (at least newer laptops probably don't) older laptops maintained the analog cabling.

Heh it's scary how many people have never actually opened a desktop box to look what's inside :D
