Holy cow, $45 million in a few hours? Who says crime doesn't pay?

A gang of cyber-criminals stole $45 million in a matter of hours by hacking their way into a database of prepaid debit cards and then fanning out around the globe to drain cash machines, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

These are the real hackers people should be aware about, and not the ones from Anonymous. Unfortunately these are the ones who prey on the weak.
 
Wouldn't have minded if they were just stealing from banks, but to steal from everyday people = nocongratsandfuckoff from me.

And no, to steal from a company who steals from its customers is not the same as stealing from its customers.

One thing I never understand is that - how do they actually end up spending that money?

I always assumed buying everything in cash would throw up a lot of red flags.

You wouldn't want to walk in and buy a house or car with cash (easily traceable transactions), but pretty much everything else under a few k$ wouldn't be a problem. You can even go to the store and buy money orders or gift cards with cash and then use them to pay things like your cell phone bill online.

As long as you keep the transactions small, and don't try to do 80 transaction at the same store in one day :) , it's just noise to the money monitors.
 
Isn't that the part where you call up a lawyer, give them a briefcase full of cash and they pick up a shelf company or set up a trust and purchase the house?

It's easy as all hell to launder money, if you have half a working brain. But sadly the majority of the population do not in fact have at least half of a working brain.

45mil is a drop in the bucket compared to the billions big banks and savings and loan crooks got away with.

Did I ever imply half the population needed to launder money? I said that laundering money is easy as all hell if you have half a working brain. Then I continued by saying half of the population doesn't have half a working brain. Do you notice how no where I said or even implied that the general populace needed to launder money? Notice how all I did was call half of the population dimwits?

Congrats, you are now in that half of the population without a working brain for completely failing at any sort of reading comprehension. Saying a task is easy for someone to complete with half a brain is NOT the same as saying half of the population NEEDS to launder money, only that the act of laundering money efficiently is easy. So I if may ask, what the fuck are YOU talking about?

Now you're obviously trolling but I'll feed the troll anyway.

The act of laundering money is easy as hell if you're not stupid. I then proceeded to explain that the majority of the population belongs to the class of people that are stupid, therefore half of the population by virtue of belonging to the class of stupid people can not belong to the class of people who know how to launder money. Expounding upon his point that people aren't paying attention, clarifying what he thinks is inattentiveness is just stupidity.
 
If you're going to bother stealing millions of dollars, you probably don't mind wearing any and all makeup necessary to disguise yourself completely.
