Considering this is McAfee we are talking about, the new technology will probably cost $49.95 and automatically flag all the legal content on your hard drive before locking you out of your computer. :D

Security software company McAfee has patented a new technology that aims to prevent the public from accessing pirated movies and music online. The system, which expands the SiteAdvisor tool, can detect and block pirated material from any website and present users with authorized and legal alternatives. McAfee says the technology will help steer consumers to authorized services and thereby prevent costly lawsuits.

I'm sure it will BSOD and boot loop the system before it has finished installing.

This will fall flat on it's face when it starts to fail. This coded laziness. Who is going to be the arbiter of said legality? What company or individual will put this bloatware on their machines?

That's just bizarre. The only "business plan" I can thing of is that now that they've created it, they're banking on the copyright lobby writing new laws for us to make it (or a licensed reimplementation) mandatory...first in the corporate environment (for McAfee's sake) and then in ISP routers (for the MAFIAA's sake).

Not a unique story, but while I was at a Fortune 500 financial corporation, we had a forced roll out of McAfee (exec VPs and their business retreats are McAfee's prime marketing targets). After a couple months, they rolled out an update that decided our in-house software was a virus and automatically deleted it off all systems, even though it was in the exclude list and wasn't supposed to delete anything without an admin giving it the OK. Luckily someone was there very early in the morning and we were able to call in all IT staff to push out our software, so there was only maybe an hour or two of downtime. Although, you don't want to know how much that hour or two cost us. Later as a consultant, I came across 4 other instances of similar behavior with McAfee... so you will never see me recommending it and I will probably boycott any software that uses their DRM protection.

good thing intel bought them... drm enforcement on die plus this ...stopping the masses or not..;)

Anyone know if an AV that will actually protect me against BS like this? Kaspersky maybe? Running a chained VPN setup to get myself out of US netspace in a secure manner now, is that enough?

And the reason for having "anti-piracy protection" on YOUR computer is what now? Durrrrr I done don't know what this movie is that says EyeRon Mun Tree, let me download it.

Yeah. I was sorta thinking the same thing.

Otherwise, the people who *are* going to pirate, wouldn't install it.

This is complete BS. I would never trust a company that backed this in the first place. Hell McTurds probably lobbied to get CISPA passed, and is pushing that agenda for profits. That saying you get the government you deserve says alot about the current state of affairs.

who the fuck would use this voluntarily?

Companies and institutions that do not end-users trying to obtain less-than-legitimate content. I.e. all the colleges and universities in the USA for starters.

You know.. I'm glad. Maybe this will prevent others from doing this, and the that'll be that. I doubt it though.

Of course not, "Well looks here, the program worked so well at the universities we should make it law across the land"...

So you're essentially buying something from a business that turns your computer into a shill for other businesses. Sure. Why not?

Remind me never to use McAssy on any system in the future.
Oh wait, I've been telling myself that since the 90's, lol.

Suck it, McAfee! :p

Maybe they'd be better off making an AV program that actually works and doesn't screw up your system as bad as the viruses it's suppose to detect, instead of playing CyberCop. Last thing we need is another lapdog for the MPAA and it's cronies.

I used to work for a company that got bought out by McAfee. Thank goodness they left that division alone, otherwise the people there would have all jumped ship. Maybe it's in the works.
