The hard drive didn't fit in anywhere securely due to old style connector, i spent about 2 weeks thinking about how i could secure it. this is the best thing that came to mine

That's an interesting HDD mod :D I've never seen it before either... but one point of confusion: what was it about the connector that wouldn't let the thing fit properly? I've never really heard of that issue, either...
 
Most excellent. A friend of mine did the same with an old tape drive. It would be funny if someone did the tape drive but put an adapter board so you could slide in a 2.5" drive into it...
 
Airflow not good enough? Take a dremel to it..

The Dremel work is blasé. But the hot glue is definitely ghetto. 2.75 food stamps.

Broken tab on G15 keyboard? Nothing a penny and cardboard taped together with hot glue on the bottom can't fix!

So here are my ghetto mods. Here is my e3000 with its paper duct to keep it cool. And here is my external seagate drive mod. I took the removable base off and shaved down the sata connectors on the cables so they would fit in. Now the drive isn't limited to usb 2.0.

The SATA connector mod gets 2 food stamps because it's still kind of fancy.
 
not really all that getto but.. old monitor i had lying around in the back of a closet and a broken laptop fixes all my wives whining that she doesnt have her own pc

dude, old ass 4/3 monitor sitting behind a laptop with it's screen ripped off, with a coolpad keeping it constantly cooled, a drop in SATA cradle as a permanent secondary drive, and adding a Berreta/Taurus 9mm just to do it? Def 4 ghetto food stamps. Would have been 3, but we know you're a real ghangsta with that piece in the pic. Coulda been 4.5 but it's too neat and no sign of drugs or money...

The box is too neat. Your score is 2 food stamps. Maybe if it was the box from a 12 pack of Bud Ice with some duct tape covering the torn cardboard it would rate 5 food stamps.
 
I managed to bring my external drive's temperature down from 60C to 33C.

********** was on track to creating the perfect cheap, no-frills external eSATA enclosure... and then they completely screwed the ventilation up.
 
i butchered a cheap case i got at frys too. kept an external raptor nice and cool. then i discovered that thermaltake made a really nice usb 3.0 enclosure with fans.
 
Ok, long story short, my Laing DDC-1 pump makes a horrible buzzing sound. The only solution that I have found so far is to wrap it in a microfiber towel I had lying around and some used paper towels and jam it into the USPS flat rate padded envelope that my sleeving supplies came in the other day. It make me sad as my system is not otherwise ghetto, but I haven't found any other way to silence the stupid pump.

 
some people keep a 40 in a brown paper bag

others keep their water cooling pump in a flat rate envelope.

(something tells me the pump is getting warmer now too?!)
 
Take apart the pump and replace the impeller. If that's not do-able, it sounds like new pump time. With sufficient water supply the pump should make minimal noise. (just my experience from not-PC pumps, so it may not be 100% applicable).

The noise would worry me because its a symptom of many other possible bad things; mostly either broken or damaged impeller or housing which all will lead to failure or least poor water flow.

I have no idea where I would get a new impeller. I've only been running the pump for a couple days so I doubt anything is worn out yet. I've taken it apart a couple of times and there is no visible sign of damage. I'm actually trying to get an aftermarket pcb for it that is supposed to improve performance and decrease noise but no luck on that so far. Anyway, I'll probably just leave the envelope on it until I can figure out a better solution or get a new pump.
 
This doesn't fall as far into the realm of ghetto as other gear I've seen in this thread, but this is my main machine as of today. Finally got my third asetek cooler! :D

Had to yank the optical drive to stick the CPU rad into the 5.25" bays. It's held in place with some random packing foam. I made a little baffle/duct for the top exhaust fan out of a cardboard box with some more of that foam zip-tied to the box. External HDD on top to keep it from lifting off from the air pressure. The asetek units are zip-tied to the GPUs ;)



 
Just sitting here with a couple Chrome tabs and Winamp up, I'm seeing the following:

CPU: 14C
GPU1: 31C
GPU2: 27C

After playing Dead Island for about 40min I was up to 53C on GPU1, which I think is just because it's ingesting warm air from the CPU and GPU2.

I put the CPU on some Prime95 for awhile... Maybe 15min? and the CPU leveled at about 40C but hit 41C shortly before I stopped it.

My office temperature is probably ~20C (68F)

I think the greatest benefit really comes down to it being pretty quiet even when I'm gaming it up. I suppose my greatest worry is that the VRMs on the GPUs are only cooled inasmuch as those blower fans are spinning around freely along with pressure forcing air past them and out the back slots and grills in the case.
 
Looks good mate. Personal opinion though, put the fans in pull instead of push if you have bad dust issues in your place...
 
Not sure if I have already posted but I feel like I should contribute.

Note: I've removed the fan & heatsinks in those pics for a more.. beefier setup (bigger & more heatsinks on all chips & CM Sickflow fan that pushes alot more air).

Also I recently had aquired a TL-WDR4300 & flashed it with DD-WRT but wasn't a fan of the 2.4Ghz performance compared to the older version. But I did open it up and also put in heatsinks. I do notice this unit runs a bit cooler but still doesn't compare to the Wireless N 2.4Ghz performance/range to the TL-WR1043ND.

Your work is too nice and clean to qualify as ghetto. Where's the duct tape? Where's the glue, aluminum foil and rubber bands?
