Beats by Dre.

That is NOT Dr. Dre. His name is flavor flav and he needs his own headphone line too. SOmething with clocks on/in them.

Haha, the actual cans should be giant clocks!! That's classic, but I do agree, Beats is a joke. I love how hard they push to advertise them for sound quality. They just trendy crap like iPods and Skull Candy.

I agree on the Beats. I was thoroughly unimpressed with their sound quality when I tried them on my own equipment (even an iPhone), especially at the prices that they are selling for. Skullcandy, on the other hand, delivers sound quality that's all over the map - from pretty wretched to quite good (depending on the specific model).

Really? That's interesting. All the sets I've listened to sound like crap, considering the price. I'm not sure which is worse, being consistently bad or inconsistently bad. At least with Beats I know what I'm getting... crap. :D

You don't remember which exact models you listened to or how much they cost?

For the record, I have listened to some well-regarded headphones that were way, way, way overrated to my ears.

Some skullcandy are ok. It is completely random though. Best to avoid that brand still.

The Skullcandy Aviators are... OK. You're still paying quite a bit for the brand and looks, but they're far above the Beats in terms of sound quality. Just don't expect them to go toe to toe with many similarly priced Senns, Beyers, and/or etc.. And in terms of their durability they are still rather cheaply made in comparison to other headphones in their price range.

So they are most certainly overpriced going by their sound quality alone, but definitely workable if the looks appeal to you.

Some of those "reputable companies" have overrated headphones that are no better than the other cheap crap in the market. i.e example the AT M-50's and the K/Q70X line imo.

AKG 701 is cheap crap? The AT I understand to a point but the akg 701 is a really good headphone for gaming and as well built as any.

No, I don't remember. After hearing them I didn't care to. I know a lot of people that are somewhat trendy and they buy crap like that, then proceed to tell me how great it is. I listen to it and find it's garbage. So I never bother to find out what model it is.

Also, there's no doubt there. The price has very little to do with the quality sometimes.

I don't think sound quality is part of the purchase decision. They're essentially statement accessories for many or even most of their users.

Some people wear $300 jeans while others would never spend more than $30. I may not understand the sentiment here, but honestly I've stopped mocking it. If the decision feels right for the individual and benefits their self-image or projects a part of their personality than I say go for it.

So long as the purchase is within their means, I suppose. And some mental health advocates may claim that if you need a $300 accessory to feel good about yourself, well then maybe you'd better take a step back.

I think it's time to shut up now. :D

Beats has done a killer marketing effort, giving free cans room any NCAA or pro athlete... In addition to their million dollar marketing agreements with hp and HTC.

Indeed, their popularity has nothing to do with audio quality.

I agree that the Audio Technica M50s are WAY over recommended and are over rated, though I think that's due to people coming from stuff like normal iPhone headphones, Beats or SkullCandy where the M50s are pretty big step up.

I however quite like the K/Q7xx like (Q701/K701/K702/K712) specifically the K702 65th anniversary. Mad Lust Envy's posts on head-fi made me give them a try and I'd love to pick up a pair of K712s (which I think are the same thing as the 65th)

Their popularity may have nothing to do with audio quality, but it HAS made people think that Beats have the best quality audio. I've had at least 2 people tell me I should get rid of my HiFiMan's and get Beats instead. This is probably my age group (College juniors/seniors, so 20-26ish) more than anything.

I tried all of them and even the studio beats don't sound that great.... they sound ok, but not fitting considering the price tag. I ended up with the sony mdr-x10's that I think are pretty underrated.

LOL. If they ever a-b those two headphones and still want the beats. KILL THEM!!! with kindness bc the poor dears are retarded.

I can honestly say that sound in general is very subjective. When i was in the market to buy headphones for home listening, i went to a few stores to sample a few pairs. I was told by many that Sennheiser would be great and many love them based on reviews. I was not impressed especially when you consider price. Im no audiophile, but i eventually settled on a pair of M-Audio Q40's for $99. I have them hooked up to a SB-Z and couldn't be happier. I also listened to the Beats line and for the price i would have to agree with everyone here that they are very overpriced. I am not one to pay for the name of the product and only judge it on performance and value. To each his own, but thats just my opinion.

I've got "Beats audio" on my HTC phone. As far as I can tell it boosts the treble a little and the bass a lot.

Lame. Although, hell, people buy that crap, I understand why people sell it, wish Dre would just go back to making records.

Wow, thanks for posting that. I thought Beats was an "enhancement" - (well, no not an enhancement)... I didn't realise it worked by crippling your system during normal play.. I wonder if there are real treble/bass controls on my HTC, gonna have to look.
