I don't want to sound like a jerk but, is this really an issue? How many people could possibly be affected? ;)

Hackers could use vulnerable charging stations to prevent the charging of electric vehicles in a certain area, or possibly even use the vulnerabilities to cripple parts of the electricity grid, a security researcher said during the Hack in the Box conference in Amsterdam on Thursday.

Well, if 10% of cars are replaced by plug in electric cars, the power grid..... on the local level.... will collapse. So they won't get the chance to do the deed anyway.:rolleyes::cool:

Funny, currently there is no way of securing the charger plug handle into the car. So you inside the movies/shopping mall/restaurant for over an hour while you car is charging.

someone can walk right up and unplug it. you come out thinking your car is charged and POP you see the charging handle on the ground.......

Short range electric cars & mass transit makes it much easier to control the people.
Don't want them going anywhere, just shut down the bus lines & power.

I'd much rather have a car (gas) with a 500+ mile highway range.

I drove abo0ut 20 miles today running errands and i saw about 4 seperate tesla model s sedans in that 1 trip.

It may be not common yet, but i think they may get more common.

Especially since more people are using solar on their homes as well. If your home had a nice sized solar setup having a electric car would be a big advantage and would have to save you some money.....you'd think since they wouldnt have to pay for gas.

Only thing is no one has done a long term study on maintience for electric cars. However, i think with tesla they have a mobile technician come to you if your car is having issues.

I wish i could afford one of those cars. They weigh 4600 lbs so they are no light weight cars but their weight is low in the car since all the batteries are @ the bottom so they handle well and achieve like 4.4 secs 0-60 times which arent half bad.

I think later iterations will be working on the range i bet. So hopefully they can make one that has like 500 mile range......then were talking. 300 mile range model s is almost 100k after everything is said and done.....i think.

They could also just disable the electricity grid and nobody could pump gas either....

there are just certain things in the world that may just benefit from being low tech. Perhaps electrical grids should just be low tech because all kids know nowadays are computers and the environment it brings with it. Certain things should be"off the grid" so to speak. Why doesn't the national power grid run on its own national intra-network not associated with the internet? Why doesn't the gubment do this too? Common sense isn't so common is it?

You had me until you spelled government, gubment.

Thank you for the reminder -- I have to pick up some tinfoil on the way home from work tonight.

you do know that purchases of Tinfoil is tracked and records kept of who buys it?

Safer to take Aluminum beverage cans and make your own! it has the added benefit of being thicker, thus more resistant to the Effects of the HAARP amd ELF.

Hackers could also shut down the power grid no water no electricity stop satellite communications and even launch nuclear weapons. LOL stupid articles like this crack me up.

This just in... vandals can cripple the gas using cars of the world by destroy every gas pump they see.

Yeah and graffiti artists could spray paint a gas pump and cut the hose. This security researcher should go lay down.

A nice sized solar setup isn't free, even with the large tax credits.
The $20,000+ you pay to have solar installed could be used to buy alot of gas.

Most of the parking lots in the Portland-area have at least 1 EV charging spot.

Depends upon your location, what credits are available to you, and what you do. For me, I ended up paying $1 per watt for my solar (San Francisco had a disgustingly high rebate, not credit). But even without such incentives, solar has easily ventured into the realm of DIY, with micro-inverters tied to each panel you don't even need to worry about alignment on all the panels, or mounting a big ass inverter in your garage, or what not. $20k+ to have someone install everything for you, is going to cost you a helluva lot less if you do the same job yourself.

Then no worries because electric cars & more mass transit ain't going anywhere. We will waste lots of money on both but they are dead ends.

The 2013 Leaf has a lock that prevents the plug from being disconnected. You can have it locked, unlocked, or leave it on "Auto" (which unlocks when charging is complete).

The Leaf will also email or text you if you are disconnected, as will many charging stations (anything on the ChargePoint network, for instance).

Obviously none of this stops vandals from cutting the cord or forcing the plug out, but then they could just slash your tires too.
