phones are just getting too big, what happened to small phones?!

Is phone size preference more related to hand size though or usage (what we want out of our "phone")? I do not have large hands yet I prefer a larger phone while my friend with larger hands prefers the comparatively small iphone 4 (I have a nexus 4) he has due to the smaller size. The bigger difference seems to be more what we want out of our "phones."

For instance regarding the discussion about one hand usage the reason I do not mind a larger phone isn't because I am able to use them better than others with one hand but because I simply do not care about one hand usage outside of basic things like dialing, scrolling, app launching and etc. Instead I prefer the extra screen size much more over being able to do everything via one hand.

A grown man crying about a phone being too big LOL. My galaxy s3 thin size fit into my pocket just fine, maybe you shouldn't wear miniature clothes?

If you like small devices that look cool you are better off with the iPodPhone5.

I find it funny people are still complaining about how companies don't know their audience and are just releasing bigger phones. Especially since said phones are their #1 seller.

If you want a smaller phone, get the smaller phone.

You can still get small phones and they generally cost less too. I just got my first cell phone ever last year and it's a itty bitty smart phone. I can easily fit the whole phone in my mouth.

So what you're saying is that because the galaxy has a higher resolution, the device needs to be made bigger
Since it's bigger, they now have more room for a higher capacity battery, which they need to power the bigger screen

Which is why the iphone, which is faster, but with a smaller screen, has a much smaller batter, still gets better battery life

Yes you can only make pixels so small so at the same pixel size a larger resolution screen has to be bigger.

Also, I see you totally missed the point about the battery. But just in case you are a little slow, let me spell it out for you.

a 1440 mah battery takes up less space than a 2100 mah battery so if you want to include a larger capacity battery, the device MUST BE LARGER.

I have always thought it funny that we can't get 3.5"-4.3" Android phones with mid-high end specs anymore. When I got my HTC Incredible, it was top-tier for its time with a 3.7" screen. The SGS2 was top-tier with a 4.3" screen. Now, phones that are releasing at 4.5" or smaller seem to top out at Tegra 3, with many on par with or weaker than the 2011 SGS2.

I don't expect a smaller phone to have the highest-end specs, give that on average they'll be pushing lower-end content, but some kind of evolution would be nice. Right now it seems that Blu is the only company releasing mid-range mid-sized phones (Quattro and Life series). Prior to that, the Incredible 4G LTE was the best smaller-mid sized phone.

I was thinking this at first, but off contract price is terrible and if you can't get facebook home off of it then it is a terrible option.

Kin 2.0.

They've announced that it can be disabled in the menus, giving you a stock-like experience. While they have given FB Home system hooks that allow it to do more than the normal app will, they haven't forked Android.

I'm impressed with the stance they've taken.

EDIT: Retail price is $449.99 at AT&T, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it available in the $350-$400 range. That's not too bad, given that Blu is selling similar hardware in the $250-$300 range, and they don't have anywhere near the reputation of HTC/Facebook. It's a competent phone.

Blame Samsung for this. They couldn't do anything to match Apple's innovation and design, so instead they just kept adding bigger screens to make their phones "shinier." You think I'm kidding? If Steve Jobs were still around, we wouldn't be in this situation.

10/10 :D

If it ever reaches that price then I will say that it is decent for the phone. Right now at $450 I won't consider it since the HTC One (M7) is only $550 and much better.

But the One isn't a 4.3" phone.

Also, judging by one of the pictures in The Verge review it's the same size as a 3.5" iPhone. Score.

The screen sizes on smartphones are still way too small. Anyone with a tablet would understand. It's a chore to type anything.

No it isn't, which is a valid point but I don't give a poop about the smaller size. If I (and I imagine your average consumer/customer) sees a phone that has a much bigger size screen, better screen, better look for a mere $100 more that it would be an easy choice. For me its easy at least.

I agree with OP. I wish there was a flagship 4.3" or smaller phone that wasn't the iPhone. While I love my iPhone when it's jailbroken I don't like being held. I wish the HTC first had first rate hardware besides the screen which looks pretty good from reviews. I don't want to have to wear cargo pants *shudder* to carry my phone without a bag.

Agreed. As I alluded to, you can get a comparable phone from Blu for $250-$300. With this phone, you're paying more for the names behind it. It's priced accordingly for the retail market. You're absolutely right in that the HTC One is a FAR superior phone when comparing them at $450 versus $550. The problem is that most people will be comparing them at contract prices, which will be $99 versus $199+. The average consumer doesn't see the real price of a smartphone. Also, this phone is a huge leap over the previous attempts at a Facebook phone.

Not disagreeing with you, just expanding on what you've said.

I want a 7.5" phone with almost no bezel. I'm browsing on my G-Nex right now (main rig is down)....too fucking small, like my dick. I mean it's functionally what is considered normal but leaves me wanting at least a couple more inches.

Holding it isn't the problem. What i want to know is how big of a phone can one comfortably fit in the front pocket? That's what I ponder lately. Give me moar or give me breasts.

Hail Ragnar!

Didn't mean to say you were, I was just expanding on right now. Those Blu phones are for sure the phone to beat right now. Great competition for the Nexus phones.

I did think that the contract pricing would be compared, but that is generally terrible since the carrier's chose the price on those phones and sometimes theres a dramatic off contract price between phones.

But you do have to keep in mind the growing demand for BYOP plans like what TMO is pushing hard.

i did a lot of research in the past month, b/c i too was looking for a smaller -android- phone. conclusion: there is hardly any and the trend seems to indicate 5+ inch phones are the future. anything smaller are really cut down, mediocre hardware-wise.

so after all the researching i found exactly 3.

this criteria was for my needs only. priorities were size, decent res screen and lastly cpu. in my searches i was looking for 4.5 inches total size, in other words the size of an iphone 4s.

android phones closest to 4.5in (or under) in total size:
sony xperia ray: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_ray-3972.php single core, but the smallest of the group at 4.37in. difficult decision between that or something a little bigger.
sony xperia U: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_u-4437.php other than outside appearance, seems very similar to the sola.
sony xperia sola: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_sola-4408.php never made it to america but should work on att

besides those 3, everything was approaching 5+ inches, except the samsung galaxy blaze, which comes in at 4.8 inches: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_blaze_4g_t769-4420.php

note: i did not look into cdma phones too much.

Or the HTC One S, or the Razr M, or the Incredible 4G LTE, or the HTC First?

ace 2 : dual core 800mhz. ruled it out b/c i'm leery of o/c phone processors. plus xperia u/sola were smaller with equivalent specs.
htc one v: single core 1ghz. ruled it out b/c sola or xperia u had better specs (subjective opinion) but were smaller. if i were to go that big i'd just get the galaxy s blaze which has dual core 1.5ghz and only .04in larger
htc one s: 5.15 inches! too big
razr m: 4.8in, not bad. if i were looking for a cdma phone
incredible 4g lte: 4.8in, same as above but cdma phone
htc first: lol

Where are you getting these dimensions?
HTC One S: 4.3" screen
Razr M: 4.3" screen
Incredible 4G LTE: 4.0" screen, has a GSM radio and SIM slot
HTC First: You can remove Facebook home, and you're left with a 720p 4.3" phone.

I see which dimension you are referring to now.

I do know what you mean about the size and specs. Bring in cost and there are few options available.

Xperia U works fine for my modest needs, only bad thing is sony's descision to compress photo down to 10% of their native size. Look OK on the phone but the compression is very noticeable on a monitor.

I was looking at that earlier and found myself asking, why? The Note's 5.5" is perfect and borderline big, so both of these phones are just too damn big. I think they'll realize it when they aren't selling. I want to say I would let the 5.8" slide, but the Note 2 is big enough as it is, so I can't let it. If anyone gets the 6.3" one then they will look like a completely fool trying to talk on a tablet basically, IMO.

Yeah, I actually posted "Why?" in the comments there, hah. I agree with all points, but I doubt it will come to the US, at least there's no plans for US release yet. It will probably remain a niche device for overseas consumption. I'll almost guarantee that the Note 3 will have a larger screen than the Note 2 though, but hopefully they'll fit it in the same dimensions as the Note 2 or smaller as they did from the GS3 to the GS4.

All these saying that they need cargo pants for s3/one/optimus/note 2/xperia Z etc must be fookin tiny or like clothing with pockets that can only take a bank card. My wallet is bigger than my phone and 1" thick and thats with no money in it lol.

Seriously, S4 is 2.75" wide with essentially a 5" screen. HTC One is 2.69" wide with a 4.7" screen.

WTF happened to phones that would comfortably hit into one's hand and pocket without being the size of paperback books?

It also seems like the technology edge is in large phones now, phones with more manageable screens that can actually be operated with one hand aren't the top of the line anymore (I don't count the iPhone because you couldn't pay me to use one).

It seems like phone sizes and features are driven by consumers who use it as gaming devices rather than productivity tools. Makes me a sad panda.

Just wait until the fold-able screen phones start coming out. I saw one of Samsung's recent phone prototypes. The phone's edge was bent even over the side of the phone so you can see messages and updates scrolling along the side of the phone when it is closed. Very cool stuff.

I agree somewhat with what you're saying, but it's clearly what users want. And I personally love it. I use a Galaxy S3 and I think that phones are getting to the point where you won't need to upgrade as often because even now I feel like the S4 isn't that big of a deal. Back when I bought the HTC Evo when it first came out, there was a better phone coming our every other month but the Evo was king so I was okay with it. And personally, I wouldn't go much bigger than my S3. The S4 if it were even a quarter of a inch bigger in screen size would be dipping into phablet territory which would cannibalize the Galaxy Note line, so I think the S series won't get bigger than the S4's screen size.

I mean, I remember when I had my iPhone 3GS on AT&T and then quit my account so I could get the HTC Evo for Sprint. And at the time that phone was something amazing. It was amazing to see and was a fantastic phone. The next time I upgrade will probably be either the Note 3 or S5. I am still really really satisfied with my S3.

"Hurr durr you must be tiny if you don't like big phones." "Hurr durr you must have tiny girly hands..."

I do in fact have tiny girly hands. And, yes, I wear tiny pants because I'm a small person. Some of us aren't NBA or NFL stars with hamfists and size 38 waists. Four inches is pushing my single-handed usability. If forced into it being the only option, I could make due with 4.3" but it would often create awkward situations for the upper corners of the screen. Unless the market dramatically changes between now and when I'm looking to upgrade in 8-12 months I'll probably be going with another iPhone. It's unfortunate, but most of the smaller Android phones are not just hampered internally but are also treated as less important to upgrade and support for long term. And, because they are further built to a price they often cut corners to make them even riskier for long-term use. I just don't see why people that are fans of big phones get so upset over people who ask for a high-end, but smaller, phone. It would have literally zero effect upon them as they would still get their 'phablets'. You don't need to justify to me why you like your big phones. I do get it. I just don't see why so many are unable to reciprocate.

I'm 5'7" 130 lbs 30" waist and can fit DVD cases into some of my front pockets...

But that aside I'd imagine Android manufacturers are of the opinion that Apple already has a lockdown on the high end small phone market. That and phablet size popularity is continuing to rise, of course they're gonna try to take advantage of it. I kinda want that Galaxy Mega 6.3 lol, pending US availability and the SoC. Only time I find myself trying to use a phone one handed is when I'm walking outdoors with a drink in the other hand.

LOL! im going from a iphone to a s4. i feel the iphone is becoming stagnant with its innovation. i also am on this forum all day, among others. i watch videos and everything else. the bigger screen is very welcomed for me. I used my friends note the other day for about 2 hours and i feel its alittle excessive for a phone, but the 5" screens are perfect
