Obsidian's Project Eternity First Look

Yes, it does look fantastic. We are looking at the start of another golden era for RPG's.

Honestly I'm not impressed. Looks like 10 year old tech at best. Sorry but they have been using 3D rendering of stuff like that since Diablo 2... Ok he wants to do it in 2D... sorry sprites don't impress me. Even if it's generating the "2D" textures on the fly based on mappings... As for "Low system requirements" all you are doing with 2D mappings is moving the work load off the graphics card back to the CPU... What are we in the 90s

Yes I loved all the old RPG, I ordered and played the new baldors gate... That said, the tech is so documented and what not that it's really nothing to write about. Show me story elements, show me large scale transfer-less scenes. Show me a reason to want to play the game.... not 10 year old+ tech.

Ok, I feel the need to point something out that people seem to have forgotten due to shitty marketing.

2D Gaming -

3D Gaming - Old school for effect.

And finally, Bullshit claimed as 3D

I just felt like clarifying that since marketing has tried so very hard to convince people that the last option is 3d, when all it is in fact is just adding additional Depth of field by tricking your eyes with an additional layer.

Back on topic..Project Eternity is looking damn nice, can't wait to see more.

That is beautiful, there is something about 2d restriction that affords a company to really focus on the gameplay and story rather than being able to see every thing in every angle for no really benefit.

The scene was not created as 2D sprites. It was created in 3D, rendered and flattened, handpainted over, then postprocessing was added. Sorry to say, the artwork is far better than 95% of modern RPG's.

Really looking forward to this ... I can still remember staring at my screen in awe when Baldur's Gate first launched ... I think this will be the dawn of a new round of tasty RPG goodness as LeninGHOLA has suggested

Man this gets me excited, between this and Wasteland 2 I think I might have a small happiness heart attack when they come out. :D

Soo stoked for this. Funny though, when I first heard 2D I thought of side scrolling Mario type game.

Heh, yeah, that's what I thought too, remember those side scrolling shooters that used parallax scrolling to simulate depth?

Wow, you guys are way too cynical. I loved the RPGs that were made in a Isometric backgrounds. I also think this type of engine would run on any tablet, smart phone and laptops. even underpowered mac devices... so I can see where this is going.

Really, you want to support bleeding edge 3D PC gaming, shouldn't chart $500+ for a graphics card IMO. Shouldn't have to.

I hope this takes off.

Ugh. That's hardly an endorsement. Any game that does aspire to be an "iPad game" = back button

looks good IMO, but graphics for games like this are like 10% of the fun of it... let's hope the rest is just as good though

I always like a good 2d game. They all seem to have such fantastic artwork and design instead of the gee-whiz polygons and boring textures.

Since this has a lot of the former Black Isle crew that did Icewind Dale I was less worried about the other game elements ... with Chris Avellone writing and since this is their own IP (so they every incentive to make it a success) I think we will have good things from this team

Josh Sawyer has pretty strong camera presence for a nerd. Damn him.

Game looks very interesting. I've been playing through Baldurs Gate again recently so I'm definitely down with this.

Keep in mind Baldur's Gate was a Bioware product. I have a strong feeling this game will be more of a mix of IWD2, Mask of the Betrayer and Darklands. IMO, if done well, that combo could be quite a bit better than the Baldur's Gate series.

Oh definitely, Done Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights etc

I've just not been playing them recently :)

This quality of engine was what I was initially hoping the re-release of Bauldur's gate was going to look like. Sure, they made many code fixes and graphical enhancements but nothing like this. Looks awesome!

Good 2D artwork is just something that needs to be beheld. Always the reason I cherished my Sega Saturn. There were a few drop-dead gorgeous 2D game on it.

...isn't it embarrassing for an established game developer to be on Kickstarter?

It has an X Y and Z axis, thus it is 3 dimensional. I wish people would quit putting a grey area where there isn't. Why developers seem intent on calling a Different view perspective as different dimensions is beyond me. It just continues to irritate the piss out of me how badly dimensional labeling is abused in media.

No. This has nothing to do with the isometric view, it has everything to do with all of the assets being 2D in real time. All of the assets besides the player characters are... 2Dimensional.

Hope they can improve the character models and/or allow zooming in a scene. I liked what I saw in the environment, but the models seemed not much different from what I remember in icewind dale. If they can give the same level of detail to the models that's in the environment, that would be swa. Animations were inconclusive. They just showed them walking really.

What does being established have to do with kickstarter? Unless you can self publish (difficult for most developers unless your projects are low budget) you must usually rely on a publisher for funding. That publisher involvement doesn't come for free. They usually retain ownership of whatever IP they publish.

KS allows a developer to self publish at much higher budgets than most Indie projects have. Until the recent Torment project from InXile, the Obsidian Project Eternity was the highest funded game ever on KS. I don't see where they should be embarrassed ;)

I wish people would quit putting a grey area where there isn't.

OK then, EVERYTHING is 3D because everything has XYZ coords.... or wait, maybe everything is 2D because the way it's finally displayed across our retina?!? Oh noes, what to decide.... let's just say everything is 4D and be done with it?

im pretty indifferent between 3d and 2d as long as the gameplay is smooth and fun.

but i dont comprehend what is so great about the graphics on this. at least donkey kong country was prettier than anything else out at the time.

even the most popular operating system on free phones can do some 3d, i dont see what the amazing is.

requesting explanation of the amazingness in this video.

Looks great to me and should look better once finished. Let the console retards have ME3 and DA2 I want Black Isle games of old.

The part where the character walks acoss the river followed by the camera angle changing to a wide view (with the character in the corner) reminds me of the old Sierra Online adventure games from the early 90s (my favorite was the quest for glory series). The only thing missing was a floating hand cursor.

That's not how 3d works at all, that's how old 2d parallax side scrollers work.

I 3d stuff there's 2 copies of the scene rendered (one for each eye) from a slightly different (adjustable) angle. Same way that "3d" film (ignoring post processed crap) is filmed with a pair of cameras next to each other, the depth comes from the differences between the 2 frames, like with your eyes, there's nothing magical going on.

...isn't it embarrassing for an established game developer to be on Kickstarter?

Kickstarter isn't about promoting small new unknown underground indie dev. It's about crowd funding, and regardless of whether you are new or already established, you need funding.

In fact, since the users will be funding a project before it begin, people would tend to fund something by people who have already proven what they are capable of, rather than some unknown new dev.

In some ways a more experienced developer will be able to navigate the minefield of crowd funding more successfully as well, I think ... one of the hardest part of these bigger projects will be keeping the backers invested in the project by soliciting their feedback throughout the development process but also balancing the reasonable feedback from the non-reasonable feedback ... if they do that poorly they could alienate the crowdfunding audience and damage their potential to do future projects utilizing crowd funding ... since these bigger projects (like PE) have 80,000+ backers this process will require careful management which will be easier for some of the more experienced companies and teams
