Defiance Discussion Thread

I got this game because I like the concept of the game/tv show. I went in with no expectations because I really hadn't read anything about it, played a beta, or watched it. If anything I went in expecting it to be bad. I enjoyed my few hours playing last night. There are some quirks with the menu's and stuff, but overall it was enjoyable.

My one real complaint is that the quad handles like shit. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the fun I have in BF3 on Quads and Dirtbikes, but this quad is just awful (and gets no air!)

Thanks flying turtle. I was hoping for a Bordelands online vibe.

Well I was going to get either this or Firefall. Can anyone who has played Firefall give their verdict/comparison? I didn't get to try the Firefall beta, unfortunately.

On sale @Amazon for $50. Not really "hot" per se as Greenmangaming usually has a better deal, but some people can't use them due to out of country CC charges failing.

i dont know why. but i really really like this game. theirs nothing special about it. cant really brag it up to my friends but i just like it for some strange reason.

I really wish Trion would get off their asses and fix the 120mhz monitor bug. I still can't access the settings menu which is fucking ridiculous this day in age for a PC title.
This has been something that's existed throughout alpha/beta and it's continually gotten worse. I guess they're too busy catering to the console crowd...

That's how I feel about it. I couldn't help but think there is so much potential that will go unused.

I watched the Comic-Con panel for Defiance, and found out some really interesting stuff.

Looks like there'll be crossover-type events, between game and TV show, for every episode of the show. Characters from the show will go to the game, then boomerang back into the show, so it sounds like they'll be frequent updates.

That is exactly what happens right now. Since the game launches before the show, you see the two main stars, Nolan and that alien girl, in the game world, in San Francisco. Well, according to the panel video, at the end of their missions, you'll see them hop into their car, leaving San Francisco, and right into the 1st episode of the show. If anyone has seen the 14-minute preview of the TV show, you'll know that the show (after the prologue) starts with Nolan and the girl in a car driving on a road. For players of the game, you'll know that they just left San Francisco. That's pretty cool, plus you'll know why they are leaving because you helped them in their missions (it's not explicitly told in the TV episode).

So there's a shared timeline, between game and show. They'll constantly interact with one another.

Another example they said is one of the bigger crossover events, that happens later in the season, where a major storm that rains razors and has a virile component, essentially spreading a plague, is moving across the US, so both the characters in the show (in St. Louis where the show is set) and in the players in the game (in San Francisco) will have to work toward a cure.

Other neat things from the video -- they created several alien languages, one of the actors not only has to know how to speak it, but has to be able to write in it.

The main actor who plays Nolan, surprises the Comic-Con audience with his MMO knowledge. He's hardcore MMO player and just happens to be the main lead character in the show. That's cool, and that's why he's all stoked for this synergy between the game and show.

Oh, yeah, they also said that they'll pick someone's character from the game, and will actually bring that character into the TV show. I think they plan to do that next season, even. So they told everyone, if you want a chance for you character to be picked for the show, please name your character with an appropriate name safe for TV use. LOL.

Anyway, check out the video (if you have time, it's 50 minutes). Lots of gaming-related topics are talked about.

Not a fan of these guys so I was reluctant to link. Do they have any valid points?

Yeah, the chat could be broken, at least, it doesn't seem to broadcast very far. On the first day, there was some chatter in the newbie area, but I rarely see anyone ask anything in chat now. And using the chat system is a bit of a pain. You either see a very tiny window on the bottom of your screen so it's very easy to miss any chat text or you can make it full-size window, which takes up almost all your screen (and I'm on a 2560x1400 display), which is ridiculous, and you can't do anything really when it's like that. I can't figure out how to resize the window.

Because of that, I just ignore chat and don't use it. I'm assuming they'll improve it. As it is, it's a very quiet game, like the Kotaku reviewer says.

I heard about the 120mhz refresh issue, but I don't play at the refresh rate so I can't comment.

The beef with the UI is pretty much right on, it's definitely a console-like menu, kind of like Borderlands 2 (whereas Borderland 1 had a more PC-friendly interface, if I remember right). It can be annoying, but I've got a 20+ button programmable mouse (Logitech G600) and programmable keypad (G13) so I can macro the menu stuff for easier access, just like it would be if you used a gamepad. I so love my mouse -- a must for any FPS or MMO game.

As far as content, I can see myself finishing all the story stuff, the main missions, episode missions and the side missions in a within a two week's time. So the Kotaku reviewer is right in saying he'll wait after a month, after the show starts (premiere is on April 15th) to give it a proper review. There will be content updates that coincide with each episode of the show, and we'll truly see how it all pans out. The episode missions are what gets updated, I imagine, content-wise.

Trion, if you take Rift's launch into account, is a bit stingy on launch-release content, but really good at giving a steady stream of continual content, so in the end, you should have a lot of content over the coming year, as well as improvements to everything. Don't know if they'll improve the UI for PC users, but maybe. Who knows.

While you wait for content, you can do PVP, co-op, or Arkfalls to take up your time. There are also other mission types that you can repeat ad nauseum, like timed race missions, rampage missions, hot shot missions, etc. I can see that getting old though, unless they add more of it (more maps, more dynamic events, etc), which I hope/assume they will.

The reviewer also said he's got an XBOX toon, and they are having issues just getting into the game. Long queues, and patches are slower to come out, for XBOX users so some of his frustration is part of that. The PC side has been much smoother (unless you are using a 120mhz display).

I've been in Marin for a couple hours now. I got 6/6 in Mount Tam and 6/6 in Madera. I have an EGO rating of 402. How is everyone else progressing?

No offense but that's the kind of gimmickery I only really see appealing to twelve year old console kids that can't wait for the next Transformers.

Looks like I will be buying it soon.

Thanks for all your input guys - very helpful.

I would avoid this game. It's certainly entertaining for a while, but it's literally the same missions over and over and over with the same enemies over and over and over. It's not a $60 game. It's a $20 game.

I would bet money that no one ever reaches the 5000 EGO cap. I can't imagine even getting half that and still being interested.

I'm still having fun /shrug. I'm up to 467 EGO, 6/6 in Mount Tam and Mandera plus a variety of misc (21/104 overall).

Yea, I still have fun playing it, but I can definitely see a lot of people being disappointed with it. Especially some of the people on this forum.

Gonna keep a close eye on this game, it looks fun. Maybe I'll wait until the 15th for that "big patch"?

Got up to like 575 now. Still need a few more in Marin plus the one that you currently can't complete since it isn't in game. Seems like you'll have to do a fairly decent amount of Co-op/Competitive/Ark Falls to really actually get completion of everything plus all the skills leveled and stuff. Though it doesn't seem like you'd really need too at all except to expand your choices. It's kind of like The Secret World in that aspect, which I think is good. Gives you something you can do and have a goal for if you want to play, but not something you have to do to play.

I'm up to the Bullet for a Badman quest and the boss fight is pissing me off.

I forgot to mention, I did that guy last night. He was pretty rough, I think I got him on my like 4th or 5th try. I ended up using one of those healing weapons for my second weapon and it helped a decent amount. I mainly hid behind one of the gas tanks in the back and used a light machine gun (though I wish I used my assault rifle). The blue things on the side are ammo if you didn't know, that helps a ton.

His grenades are rough though

I really want to try this game because I love the concept. Anyone willing to do a write up with their explanations and a quick write up on it.

Edit: Also another useful thing I've found is a map of the first 3 areas with the different points. Helped me find the Data recorders since all the wiki does is tell you location (that I had no idea what half of actually where)

Fuck it, I pulled the trigger. Gonna try it out tonight.

Haha, nice. It's a lot of fun for what it is. I don't see myself putting in hundreds of hours, but I'll put it around 60 or so for the base game and then play through all the extra content that they add every week.

Got this on Saturday. Have been looking for a new MMO. It was either this or Planetside. And i must say for a FPSMMO this is great.
I'm not sure what it is but it has that spark of atmosphere. They currently have the ingame chat disabled to stop all the usual BS at the start of a new MMO. It's light on helping newbies but i did find an ingame help section that explains most things (inventory / space bar / info)

Name is Max Million, currently at about 120. Think I'll be sticking with this one for a while.

OH and one more thing...this is guildwars style pay for the game with NO monthly fee.

I picked this up yesterday as well. It actually is surprisingly fun - I had a great time in the hour or so I had to play last night. The combat is definitely well done - I've wanted an MMO with combat that behaves like this for a long time. No more mashing number keys over and over again.

I don't know how much the game opens up later on but the travel doesn't seem to take too long either. This makes it nice to jump in, complete a few objectives, and hop out if you don't have too much time to commit in one play session.

Hate to break it to you but the game never opens up. After you've played the game for an hour all there is to look forward to is more of the same. Too bad because this game had a lot of potential to open up and offer lots of varying missions/enemies/raids, etc, but it doesn't

Lol, thanks!

The 0 damage Arkfall thing is killing me. Want to see how much I'm doing. I'm up to like 775 Ego and probably like half way through San Fran. Probably work mostly on trying to level weapon skills by doing Major Arkfalls and Co-op stuff
