Steam won't connect

I have tried everything but this garbage piece of shit bloatware program refuses to go online. I have reset my router, made sure the ports were open, ran anti-virus checks, turned off my firewall and everything else, and the shit still won't go online. This has been going for 24 hours now.

Everything else on my PC connects to the net fine, including the devil's spawn itself, Origin.

What the fuck do I do?

This happens every once in a while to me, too.

What I usually do is uninstall steam for 48 hours because that's the time cycling of the steam servers. You'll need to uninstall it, then run a registry cleaner and remove any and all references to steam/valve, and then wait the requisite timeframe.

On Thursday night (assuming you do this tonight), you'll need to install it with your router turned off and your computer disconnected from the net. Reboot your computer and then start it up *while* connecting your computer to the router. If you don't time it right then the ports won't forward correctly and you'll have to start the process over.

It's a huge pain in the ass but it's something Valve said they'll be addressing in the upcoming patch next Monday. So if you don't want to deal with it uninstall the client and wait until after the weekend.

Can't tell if you're serious or not.

What the hell are you guys doing to your computers to cause this problem? OSX, Windows, or Linux?

Uninstall your toolbars, check c:\ProgramData\ for viruses,

Utter incompetence. Okay mope54 I will give that a go, thanks a lot.

Windows 8. I've already checked for viruses and I don't have any toolbars installed.

Maybe its a continuation of the stupid thing that was happening to people before. Something about a micro update causing random people to not be able to connect until it happened randomly when they restarted it.

If you contact Steam support they'll just copy paste the usual "delete blob file" then "delete everything just steamapps and Steam.exe then run Steam", so do both.

Okay, I deleted everything in the Steam folder except the steamapps folder and the .exe file. Steam is now updating.

Fingers crossed...

EDIT: Nope, it still won't connect, and now I've lost access to Offline Mode.

I had this yesterday, could connect on phone, not on my machine

It just magically fixed itself at one point, lasted about an hour

So is the best option now to just wait for it to correct itself? I wanted to get online and download the Borderlands 2 update, but now I can't even play it, let alone anything else on Steam.

I have no idea what the fuck the actual problem is / was

It managed to connect fine to get the update after I deleted most of the Steam folder, so there shouldn't be a problem with it accessing the Internet. I can't figure it out and it is really pissing me off. I hate Steam.

Wow, seriously? If you need to open up or forward some ports then just do so (hint, you don't need to configure anything in your router on a standard NAT setup for steam to work).

One of my old bosses had a joke about when the developers would "accidentally" fix something. Essentially, if you don't know how you fixed it, then you didn't really fix it.

Submitted a ticket with Steam Support. Now to wait around for them to take forever to respond, and then finally respond with something useful instead of shit I already know and/or have already tried.

Are you keeping Windows 8 updated?

I'm on WIN8 and at one point my Steam would eff up maybe once a week and I'd have to delete most things from the Steam folder and reboot to get it to even start up. This only happened after I went to Windows 8 but it eventually stopped happening.

Yeah, I have automatic updates on.

Got a mate who lives in the next town over to try logging into Steam. He can't log into it either and cites the same error. Maybe this is an Australian problem?

Nah too easy. Just blame everything else. Have a Fosters and go to the beach and relax. You live in Australia for fucks sake. I miss that place more than life itself.

I get this problem from time to time with Steam and Origin, it will log me out and I will be unable to connect. I have to completely exit and close the program and relaunch it most of the time.

I uninstalled Steam, cleaned the registry with CCleaner, restarted the computer, re-downloaded and reinstalled Steam, and now I'm getting a "to run Steam, you must first connect to the Internet" message. I tried booting up in Safe Mode with Networking, same thing. I ran anti-virus scans in Safe Mode, then tried again, and same thing.

24 hours on and still no fucking response from Steam Support.

I am at my wit's end. It's because of shit like this that people torrent games.

No problems here on 8 at all. Although I do know a few times I have had issues updating my laptop running 7 and the constant updates freezing and requiring shutdown to reattempt. The updates they keep pushing out seem to be causing a few issues on 7 that I have noticed, but have yet to on 8 machine. But that may just be me.

You probably have a problem with your Layered Service Provider stuff. (google)

Do you have a 3rd party firewall installed, or have you ever had one installed before? Probably something to do with that.

I've just been using Windows Firewall. The wireless network is disabled on my router, and the scope of websites I browse is pretty narrow (no pr0n or torrent sites). I did use COMODO but it used up too much of my paltry 2GB DDR2 RAM.

I'll try fixing the LSP. I have no trouble with any other program accessing the net, though...as evident by my ability to whinge here.

Tried the LSP fix, didn't work.

Third day now, still no response from Steam Support, and Steam still won't connect.

Try using a US proxy server/VPN, see if it connects.

What's the fastest way to do that? Is there a good free VPN that isn't dodgy?

EDIT: Tried OpenVPN. Still getting the same fucking error. I'm about to smash this piece of shit computer. Have fucking had it.

Do you have an Antivirus program? If yes, turn it off, or maybe uninstall it & see if that is your issue.

If you happen to have a spare HD around, install Win8 on it & then steam & see if it works.

I have done this about 38 times already. It does not work. Also, your second link is broken.

That's unfortunate. I hope you find a fix for it...

2nd link fixed. Work proxy likes to play with the Steam support links it seems.

Try adding "-tcp" to the steam shortcut?

Steam will then be very slow to start up, so let it sit there connecting for 4-5 minutes.

This has worked for me in the past.

Just gave that a go, no joy.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I am going to have to get someone with a laptop around here tomorrow to log into Steam on that, and see if it is a problem with the router or my PC. I have run about 10 anti-virus scans with 4 different programs, and none have turned up anything that would have appeared to prevent Steam from signing in.

It tries to connect, because the "Steam - Updating" box comes up and hangs there for about 10 seconds before going to the "ERROR. Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, first you must connect to the Internet" message comes up. If I have the modem turned off, the "Steam - Updating" box doesn't appear at all.

I've never gotten that error. In my case steam just failed to show the UI.

When steam fails it isn't like when xbox live has trouble, where you loose MP, you loose most of your library. On top of that Steam support is useless, and so is the error messages the client spits out (and there's no log either, not that I could find anyway).

One way you can try testing steam (without reinstalling everything) is to install it into a VM, but a laptop known to work is of course even better.
