Square Enix has launched Final Fantasy V for iOS devices in the Apple App Store. The graphics and controls have been updated and optimized for modern mobile devices. Many companies are jumping on the retro wagon, bringing nostalgic gamers back to the popular games of 20+ years ago.

Except that FF5 is probably the worst FF game ever, aside from FF2 (really Square, you decided to go with use it or lose it stats?)

The storyline of FF5 is so hacked-together that you lose a party member, and he's magically replaced instantaneously by his daughter (who also instantly inherits all his stats/jobs/etc). Excellent job there, writing your way out of a corner!

The story may be weak, but the gameplay is probably among the best of the Final Fantasy games. The job system is far more interesting than anything from the other games.

And that is why we have FF3 :D

Better story, same job system!

i think ff4 is coming 1st and 5 will come out a few months after damn ios exclusivity

I actually wish that Sqeenix would stop producing these simple lower production cost re-releases for a pretty penny, and actually spend a little more effort updating their older games for current console and PC hardware. Some of there games, especially in the FF category have been released so many times that it is hard to dispute the fact that they are milking them for every penny they are worth while only putting very little effort into the re-release.

Most of the cost of updating the games for current, non-mobile, hardware would be in the graphics department. Maybe sound too. After that, just do an edit of the localization and a few tweaks to maybe make the story work. And there you go, you have an updated game that has more draw for the current generation of gamers focused on graphics, and those of us who like nostalgia, but are tired of seeing the same games released over and over and over again with barely any effort put into it.

Square confuses me sometimes.

The only FF games that people want remade are 6 & 7, and those are the only ones Square seem unwilling to remake.

I would love remakes of 6,7,8, and a better faster version of tactics. And I'd like them through steam. They should keep making them the old way. Not in 3D but with chono trigger like graphics. And FF6 graphics.

Its safer though due to expectations. Just like lots of people wish Firefly was brought back, but deep down we know it would just be disappointing.

I really liked the Crisis Core system were it was random. It was exciting, you never knew when you were going to level up or get some upgrade. Most of these games in this genre are very linear in that perspective.

Speak for yourself, I've been waiting on the FFX remaster for awhile (not nearly as long as FF13 versus).

could we get a good NEW final fantasy instead of a hundred remakes and re-releases?

Well, they did re-release FF6 for PSX, GBA, and Wii. I'm perfectly happy with the graphics for it, it doesn't need an update as badly as the original FF or FF7 do.

Oh yeah, and the 1998 and 2012 PC re-releases for 7, as well as the 2009 PSN release.

So they have been making sure you can play them, even if they haven't gussied up the games like a $1 hookerbot.

Ugh... I'm going to have to disagree, the Job system is just a lazy way to allow you to do whatever you want with minimal characters. I'm sorry I want an archetype for a character and I want that character to stick, I don't want my main character be a fighter, a thief, mage, cleric, ninja, samurai, lancer, archmage, random character class that you need to max out all other classes to get... if it's a fighter, keep him a fighter, if you need to do something give him different types of fighter type characters he can advance through.

FFT android version already you fucks, thanks

FFT is so god damn good

Loved FFT, and fell in love with it again on the PSP. The cell shading and voice acting was spot on in the PSP version. Wish we could get that for android.

i want the damn android one to hell with ios

The Android market with gaming capable hardware is small, it is fragmented into even smaller hardware and OS niches, and it has users that spend less money. Developers avoid it because it costs more to develop for and support for less profit than iOS. Don't worry though, Square charges way more than anyone else does for their iOS games, games with much better graphics no less. They're notoriously expensive compared to other big developers and publishers on the app store.

A straight PC port of XCom Enemy Unknown is coming to iOS this year, that's one game I can see that justifies a $15-$20 price tag.
