According to vgleaks.com and confirmed by an independent source, rumors of Microsoft’s new Xbox 720/Durango will be always on and online are beginning to look more and more accurate by the day. This could spell big trouble for Microsoft and their hardcore Xbox gamer base.

It all comes down to choices. There’s nothing wrong with a console that stays on, or that stays connected. It’s the lack of options that is troubling.

lol I don't care. Mine is plugged in most of the time anyway. As is everyone else with Xbox Live :p

I hope to freakin god that machine gets hacked left and right, and should be legal too. The hubris of Microsoft is going to be legendary. I'm getting sick and tired of buying crap I have no control over anymore. Why does it always need to be powered on? What if I unplug it? Why does it always have to be online?

If this is true and it doesn't fail, I'll be even more ashamed of the hypocrisy that exists in the gaming community.

Supposedly, the always on feature, though not confirmed entirely unless you read the ongoing thread in the Console forum, is to prevent used games on the console.

The ongoing discussion is that games will now require a product code like their PC counterparts and be linked to your Xbox Live account. That is one rumor.

And, the always-on feature is to ensure that that game belongs to you and no one else, and that you didn't get that game from a previous owner.

Nifty, huh? Downright sneaky and inconvenient? Yes.

It's almost like having your Wii U account linked to your hardware which is doubly worse.

I don't have internet at home, so this would be no good for me... but I don't plan on buying xbox (never had in the past anyways) so this doesn't bother me

well I have a 360 and play on it quiet a bit but if these reports are true then they can stuff their 720 where the sun don't shine.

Pretty much my thoughts. It's one thing to require an always on connection for a single player game. It's entirely another to require an always on connection for a device where 90% of its functionality is online, and you can't mod it and be online anyway without risking a ban. People that do want to mod it will mod it so they don't need to be online anymore. That, and an Xbox isn't exactly a portable device like a gaming laptop, so the argument

MS will shoot themselves in the foot if they actually do this though, simply because broadband isn't as widespread as it should be, and I know plenty of people that don't have their Xbox hooked up to a network.

Now actually being physically on all the time? Lol no, not like the current Xbox is. I can see having a sleep mode to prevent a long startup time, like an iPad or Roku. And that would actually make a lot of sense if they are trying to make it a more multimedia capable device, nobody wants to wait for it to boot up before being able to watch something.

I'm normally against always on drm, but an always on connection makes sense with the Xbox with a large feature of that being Live.

That, and an Xbox isn't exactly a portable device like a gaming laptop, so the argument that you might not be in an area without Internet sometimes doesn't make much sense, as long as they inform people of this before purchase.

Sorry, I didn't finish that thought in the last post.

An always online xbox will probably lock games to your xbox live account (it makes sense, doesn't it?)... so no used games.

I can't see it happening. Microsoft can't afford to go the always online route when their biggest competitor hasn't.

Sony has already tried something similar with the PSP Go. It failed badly. But, if MS goes online only, I can see Sony quickly following. Let's be realistic. They're both companies, and the consumer's interest isn't their primary concern. We like to view competing companies as enemies who want to kill each other, but there was a quote (can't remember exactly what) by a Pepsi upper management person who stated that while enemies, Pepsi couldn't really exist without Coke. I view it the same way about MS and Sony. And when their interests coincide, only the consumer is the real loser.

On one hand, preventing used game sales is a really shitty thing to do.

On the other, this might put GameStop out of business.

I am torn.

Consoles shouldn't need to always be connected. A lot of games have no real reason to be connected other than updates and DRM. People probably tend to step away from their PC and fire up their console more often when their connection is down, but I guess they'll just get thrown under the bus. I guess that's what they called good business these days.

Remember Live was a completely stupid idea, a p2p service you paid for monthly... Yet that "worked"... :D

I bet you anything they are hearing rumors about the dvr portion if the xbox, since you know that's exactly what a dvr does, always on/always connected...

People don't care. As long as their kids ask for it they will buy it. Also I read that it's going to require that the games be installed on the hard disk to be played. 1TB hard drive for storage space. This is to move to a Steam type system in the future where all games are downloaded.

Maybe this will signal the roll out of internet to all of America. I know where I live there are many miles of populated areas where you still can't get anything better that 14.4kbps dialup. Some can't even get that. Satellite doesn't work with XBOX; already tried it. Too many dropped connections and timeouts.

this was gonna be the generation i got into console gaming. PC and i have always been exclusive til now but i finally have a bunch of disposable income now. however, if i cant get used games and new the new games dont drop to like $20-30 to compensate, then theres no way in hell im wasting my money on these. PC is a better experience anyway.

I rarely play consoles anymore but the only time I ever fire up my PS3 is if the internet went down for more than 15min.

Steambox imo will have the best future as you may need to be online for steam you can at least enable offline mode so you don't always need to be connected. It is just going to take a couple weeks to download your favorite games if you are on dialup is all.

Yeah, the conspiracy folks are on this already. Infowars thinks this is a big-brother deal to track us. I read that they want to use the next version of Kinect to tell how many people are watching the "content", and charge by the person. I doubt we are there yet, but THAT would suck for the people that had one.

If I was interested, I might care more. Add it stands, so long as playing online requires gold I won't purchase. I have a 360 already collecting dust. That said, I'll wait to see if the rumors are true. This is such an unbelievably terrible idea.

I thought MS was the king of online multiplayer stuff which has been the sole selling point for this console :) .

Well I can name one more unbelievably bad idea : Windows 8

Nifty? Not even close, I'll pass, the easiest way to bypass this thing being always on, plug it into a powerstrip that has an on off switch.

Microsoft has already patented that Kinect feature you're talking about.

It's to use Kinect as a way to charge per person on the content being shown. So let's say you're watching a movie-on-demand through Xbox live service. Like a movie theatre but at home, they can use that to charge how many people that's watching that movie.

I believe Microsoft also patented a way to use Kinect for targeted advertising on Xbox Dashboard as well.

I've never been much of a gamer but I do completely understand the appeal. I just can't help but feel that being a gamer is becoming more and more of a dangerous thing. So often I feel like gamers are being turned into pawns just because of their passions. Maybe at one time, it was all about the "art". Maybe it was about the fun and perhaps a bit of accomplishment. Certainly there is a great deal of effort put into the best games.

There are plenty of examples like SimCity. It's all the things a player must sacrifice and all the hoops to jump through...

Things have certainly changed....I can't really say for the better exactly....

This is the DVR portion they are referring to people. They might still prevent used games but the always on is to record your biggest losers and the Bachelor.

The PS4 might be more powerful but the Xbox will be a multimedia powerhouse.

Sucks if you want to take a game over to a friends house and play with your mates.

Don't like it? Speak with your wallets and don't buy it. Don't sit and complain about it and buy it anyway, that sends no message to them at all.

Alex Jones is a Looney tune, why people take him seriously I just don't understand. Maybe I need a MinusIQ pill.....

if this is true, for either console for that matter, ill never touch either of them. i primarily use my ps3 when my internet goes out, so this would completely screw me over.

I'd love my Xbox to patch my games BEFORE I'm ready to play them, so yeah, always on/always connected is just like Steam running on my PC. Kinect being required, however, is a non-negotiable deal breaker for me.

Dont have a console, dont want one... but... "Pull out the power cable and the network cable?" ;)

If this is true.. then count me out. I'll get a PS4 instead. Horribly fucking dumb choice on MS part how sad.

I've been bitching about this shit since the inception of the online requirements for even so much as a DRM check started. A single player or local multi-player game should NOT require an internet connection. Once you've paid for your product, you shouldn't be denied use of it if the internet goes down, or circumstances happen that leave you without internet service.

And I was proven right about all of this. It just becomes more and more invasive with every new generation, to the point where we have to pay $60 for a game that's just waiting to tell us to prove we bought it EVERY FUCKING SECOND we play it.

Fascist corporate crap. Next they'll require we plug an always-on webcam so they can monitor us and shut off the game if they see us let somebody play our machines without swiping a credit card into the system to pay for the privilege.
